Who can say no to a humanoid robot that can actually feel a hug? 🤖 JQ Industries just built a fabric-based electronic skin for Unitree G1 — covering the torso, hands, and feet. This is not about appearance. It’s about giving robots real tactile sensing and pressure feedback. According to the company, the system includes tactile gloves, upper-body skin, and foot sensors. That means the robot can feel contact through its hands, detect pressure across its body, and use foot feedback to adjust balance. This is the missing layer in most humanoids. Vision alone can’t handle physical interaction. Robots need touch to grip safely, react to humans, and stay stable in real-world environments. JQ says its fiber sensors can detect forces as low as 0.01N, handle up to 3500kPa, and bend below 0.1mm radius. The system can also integrate with Isaac Sim, making tactile data usable for training and deployment. Unitree G1 is already built for manipulation and control — this adds the sensing layer it lacked. JQ says it’s now working with multiple humanoid companies, with some systems already shipping at scale. This is what happens when robots stop just seeing the world — and start physically feeling it.

The robot dodges incoming soccer balls with lifelike reflexes: instantly detecting the ball, predicting its trajectory, and smoothly stepping, twisting, or crouching while staying perfectly balanced. --- This breakthrough in perceptual-motor control brings us closer to human-like conditioned reflexes in complex, uncertain environments. I have to say, this kind of reactive ability is truly necessary--it will allow humanoid robots to safely navigate crowded factories, assist in homes with unpredictable human movements, and operate reliably in disaster zones full of sudden obstacles.

People often ask how did the Unitree robots get so good all of a sudden. It wasn't all of a sudden, and it's because they ship their hardware and open source their SDKs. Arguably these robots are nearly useless out of the box, but you have full dev control of them. Because of that, the hardware has become a very popular R&D platform with an ecosystem around it and the Unitree G1 is undoubtedly an order of magnitude better than it could ever be at this point if Unitree was instead just doing quiet internal dev of both the hardware and software. Too many hardware companies for really cool products that seek to be community-driven (robots, AR glasses...etc) desire to make a profitable walled garden and their greed just ends up walling out developers and their product gets outpaced by the G1s of the world.

Robot dog learned dexterity! 🤯 Robots usually struggle to move and handle objects at the same time, a challenge called loco-manipulation. Researchers at the RAI Institute have developed a new system called ReLIC that makes this easier. Instead of giving robots fixed roles for arms and legs, ReLIC lets them switch roles on the fly, for example, using a leg to help lift something while balancing on the others. This approach is more natural, similar to how humans use different body parts together without thinking about it. ReLIC was tested on a four-legged robot, which successfully performed tasks like moving boxes, opening drawers, and placing items into containers.

Amazon FAR’s LadderMan learns ladder climbing in simulation, transfers zero-shot to a real Unitree G1, and supports stable on-ladder manipulation under tight ladder constraints. The demo: climb, stabilize, adjust a wall painting, hand off a box from a high shelf, tighten a light bulb. That last part matters because ladders are brutal for humanoids: sparse footholds, limited handholds, noisy depth, and almost no margin for balance errors. This is what real human spaces actually demand — not just flat floors.
