Every culture that made contact with these stories painted themselves into them. The Florentine painters did it. The Pre-Raphaelites did it. They all made Helen of Troy look like them. Nolan is doing it now. His cast, diverse and unmistakably contemporary, is his way of saying what Homer’s bards said to every room they ever worked: this story is us. Nolan isn’t erasing Homer. He’s doing what the tradition has always demanded.

I've seen the IMAX movie. Nolan's interpretation of Odysseus through Matt Damon humanizes the fictional character. Nolan succeeded in bringing Odysseus to life—there's no trick there, just talent and skill combined. If you watch the movie from Odysseus's point of view, you'll be able to experience what it's like to be him. The movie is really simple—no tricks at all. It tells the truth about the human experience: even if your reality includes Cyclops, gods, goddesses, giants, witches, and so on, you'll still face challenges of your own making. This is my favorite part of the movie because it reveals why Odysseus "lost" his way back home.

Unfortunately, it takes huge calamities and wars for people to wise up and write new laws of international order. If the Vietnam War, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan failed to do so for US statesmen, I'm afraid the Iran War might have to do it in a painful way.

Your call for a fresh take on "patriotism" intrigues me. The word became a polarizing marker after its deployment in support of the Vietnam War. "Honor" is like that too. By calling for "peace with honor," Nixon tarnished the spirit of moral standing we need "now more than ever."

I was right in the middle of reading Dominion by historian Tom Holland when I went to see "The Odyssey" & your take meshes so well with what I saw on screen through the lense of Holland's book. Thanks for the thoughtful video!

We only have laws governing human rights and wars on paper. People governing countries are no longer protectors and followers of that constitution. They bend laws to their will, and follow the ones that benefit them. Many countries have v little, petty democracy.
