The only way to rectify this curse is to make the people dirtying the train, clean all the compartments. This will help us reduce such instances. If they don't then get the cost of cleaning the train from them. If it still doesn't work then put them in the railway cell.

The Lagos State Government has inaugurated a Special Task Force to combat indiscriminate waste dumping across the metropolis, particularly on roads, bus stops, garages, and lay-bys. As part of the initiative, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) will work with government agencies as “waste police” to monitor and report environmental violations. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi , emphasized that tackling environmental abuse requires collaboration between government and transport unions, warning that offenders will face sanctions. He also directed union leaders to ensure cleanliness in their garages and parks, discourage indiscriminate trading, and remove illegal structures that contribute to waste generation. Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Egube, highlighted the critical role of transport workers in maintaining public order and security, urging them to report suspicious activities and support efforts to keep Lagos clean and safe. LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, PhD , noted that Lagos generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily and called on transport unions to help prevent waste disposal on roads, promote proper waste management, and stop street trading around bus stops and newly constructed roads. Stakeholder Sola Giwa assured the unions of government support in enforcing sanitation standards, removing illegal shanties, and maintaining clean transport facilities. Let me show you the harsh reality of #SwachhBharat. 👉The Incident; I’ve witnessed this many times before, but today I was able to captured it on video. The train attendant, like many others, removed the trash bag from the bin, inserted a new one, and casually tossed the old bag—filled with waste—out of the moving train. The compartment is clean, so his job is done, right? But who cares about the thousands of kilometers of tracks now littered with our trash? 👉The Reason We all want to keep our compartments, homes, neighborhoods, and cities clean. But what happens to the trash once it leaves our sight? Few of us think about where it ends up. Much of what we dispose of through the ‘gadi wala’ gets dumped in the outskirts of cities, piles up in landfills, or pollutes our rivers. The real issue runs deeper than just littering. We ignore the critical infrastructure needed to handle waste. We dont even know about waster management, recycling plants, sewage treatment centers, and proper waste segregation. Govt also dont care because these solutions don’t attract votes or immediate attention. 👉A small solution Lets take a small action else this post will be buried too in the countless trash of tweets. I am not calling for any punitive measures against the cleaner or vendor. Instead, I ask the railway authorities to implement proper guidelines for waste disposal on trains. During long journeys, bins need to be emptied multiple times. - What is the attendant supposed to do with the trash? - Where should it be stored? - Is there a protocol in place? We need answers, Ministry of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw. Let’s make sure this isn’t just another post but a starting point for real change. Bangalore produces around 7,000 tonnes of waste a day, roughly 3,000 tonnes of that is wet waste. All of it has to be collected, segregated, and processed every single day. A lot of it still ends up badly treated or in a landfill. We got to know the Hasiru Dala Innovations team a few years ago. They've spent years doing the thankless part of this, collecting and segregating waste at scale. But wet waste has remained a problem. Dry waste has buyers. Wet waste goes bad too quickly to store, and composting it usually loses money. Carbon Masters takes that wet waste and turns it into biogas you can cook with. More importantly, they've made a business out of it. Put the two together, and it's fairly obvious. Hasiru Dala has the waste and knows how to sort it. Carbon Masters knows how to generate economic value out of it by generating biogas and organic manure. This problem goes beyond Bengaluru's garbage. India imports about 60% of our LPG and half our natural gas. Turning our own waste into fuel is about as self-reliant as it gets. We need more people working on hard problems like this. That’s also why we’ve backed both Hasiru Dala Innovations and Carbon Masters through Rainmatter by Zerodha. Wet waste goes bad too quickly to store, and composting it usually loses money. Carbon Masters takes that wet waste and turns it into biogas you can cook with. Comm. says the State Government will continue to pay special attention to waste conversion The quest to make good use of the high solid waste generated in Lagos State got another boost on Tuesday as the state expressed readiness to partner with some Sweden organizations on how to turn both solid waste and liquid waste to energy across the metropolis. Speaking during the meeting at Alausa, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab said the state will continue to pay special attention to waste management adding that waste is not a waste but remain one of the best resource every where. He said Waste to energy is a project that the State Government is willing to embark on in order to move the narrative forward in a progressive and productive way. "Our resolve from the beginning of this tenure is that whatever we have to engage in to manage and deploy our solid and liquid waste as a resource is a priority for this government as it will save Lagos but other neighbouring state" he said. The Commissioner stated that the Ministry which is a public facing ministry has resolved to embrace any project that will cut the carbon foot print in the state. He said the state being a coastal state is faces alot of challenges, one of which is the Atlantic Ocean rising at the peak of the rainy season adding that the state is also at the end of numerous tributaries where water is discharged into the lagoon all of which could lead to flooding in the state. He said lagos generates between 13,000 to 14,000 tonnes of waste per day and the state is open to suggestions about possible productive ways to turn it into a Resources and move the state forward. Wahab said lagos as a State is working to decongest the roads and make Lagos a 21st century mega city saying that the cause and effect on the environment is that these moves help to reduce the emissions on the long run. According to him, As a result of current energy crisis in Nigeria, this has caused the spike in the cost of PMS and its multiple effects on the economy. So if the Lagos State Government can go ahead with this project. it will solve half of the problem in the PMS high price in Lagos. "This project is something we have to pursue deliberately and diligently. This is because while the government on its own part is trying to push out CNG at lower cost, conversion of waste to energy will also be an option especially for public transport in Lagos" Wahab said Lagos account for over 50% of the vehicular traffic in the country with the smallest land mass as well as 22million people which is 10% of the country’s population being inhabited in with less than 3,600 square kilometers of land, stressing that the project is not an option but a necessity. He recalled that earlier in the year, the state government had been in consultation with two Dutch companies one which will turn waste to energy and the other which will deal with electronic waste, adding that the state can indeed change the notion that waste is not a waste but a resource. The head of the delegation, representative of the Consul of Sweeden and the Business Promotion Officer, Sweden Embassy Abuja, Ms. Sara Ibru noted that the Lagos Government is known to be very pro - active in all its endeavours and that the Swedish Organizations are willing to collaborate with Lagos State to turn solid and liquid wastes into valuable resources. There was not even enough space to walk to the washroom. People were sleeping on the floor, near the doors, and everywhere possible. The TC came and saw everything, but did not say a single word. It looks like this has become normal for Indian Railways. I have sympathy for these passengers, but if Railways already know that general coach passengers are more, then why not add more general coaches? Why are sleeper coaches being turned into general coaches every day? For years, passengers have been raising the same issue, posting photos and videos, tagging officials, and still nothing changes. Indian Railways talks about modernization and new trains, but what about basic crowd management and passenger safety in normal trains? And please, do not ask me for the PNR. Asking for the PNR will not solve this issue. This is not one passenger’s problem. This is the daily reality of thousands of people.

This donation comes at a crucial time when we are scaling up our waste management operations to match the reality of a megacity that generates over 13,000 tonnes of waste daily. Let me be clear: we have moved decisively beyond the outdated collect-and-dump model into a sustainable zero-waste economy where waste is viewed as a valuable resource. We have signed multiple Memoranda of Understanding with local and international partners that will divert close to 5,000 metric tonnes from the daily waste stream through recycling, reuse, and resource recovery. These 10 new compactors will be strategically deployed to critical locations experiencing high waste generation and to communities that need enhanced evacuation services. They will improve our turnaround time, support the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, and help us sustain the cleaner Lagos we are building. Today, we convened a strategic meeting with all the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Area Chairmen, alongside selected members of the Lagos State Executive Council, to secure their support for the successful take-off and sustenance of the re-introduced Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise in the state. The meeting was in furtherance of our shared commitment to restoring the culture of cleanliness across Lagos. I emphasised that achieving a cleaner, flood-free and sustainable environment requires collaboration between the State Government, Local Governments and residents. Last month, Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, formally launched the re-introduced Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise as a call for Lagosians to take responsibility for their immediate environment. With Lagos generating about 13,000 to 14,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, the challenge of waste management requires collective and consistent action. We already have market sanitation exercises every Thursday between 7am and 10am across the State. If markets, which are central to economic activity, can observe regular sanitation, it is only right that households and communities also embrace this culture. As part of the implementation strategy, State EXCO members, Local Government Chairmen and senior officials will be assigned to various locations to monitor compliance during the designated sanitation periods. A monitoring and enforcement team will also be deployed to ensure effectiveness. In addition, we will introduce a monthly award for the cleanest Local Government or LCDA, with incentives attached, to encourage healthy competition and reward commitment to environmental cleanliness. We also urged all Chairmen to intensify public enlightenment on proper waste disposal and discourage dumping refuse on roads, medians, open spaces, drainages and canals. WATCH | Hello crime watch. May you please help me share this. I witnessed this vehicle dumping a huge amount of litter at this bus stop at Kuwadzadza Extension turn off along Bulawayo road today and I managed to record the incident. What makes this even more concerning is that this is a bus stop used by members of the public, and the dumping is happening just a few metres from our workplace. People are using this area every day, yet it is being turned into a dumping site. The same area was cleared of litter about two weeks ago by GeoPomona Waste management and Bitumen World. On top of that, the waste collection company is now collecting litter per household twice a week in this area. So how is it possible that just two weeks after the area was cleared, someone can come and dump enough waste to fill an entire pickup/bakkie? I also managed to capture the vehicle’s registration number and have the video footage of the incident. This isn’t an area that is being ignored by waste collectors. Collection is taking place twice a week, the area was recently cleaned, and yet people are still bringing large amounts of waste and dumping it at a public bus stop. This is becoming a serious problem for the people who work and live around here, as well as members of the public who use this bus stop. We cannot keep cleaning the same places over and over again while people continue dumping waste there. There needs to be proper investigation and accountability for this kind of behaviour. I’m sharing this because I genuinely hope something can be done about it. Harare deserves better than this.
