OpenAI has just released GPT-5-Codex specifically for coding! Friendly reminder that they've a VS Code extension that you can use with your ChatGPT account at NO additional cost. Basically a strong alternative to Claude Code or Cursor. (Setup below)

1. Install the extension - Open the Extensions tab in VS Code - Search for "Codex" in the search bar - Install "Codex – OpenAI’s coding agent" by OpenAI

2. Use Codex At the bottom of Codex, you can choose different options: - Local or cloud to either edit your code locally or assign a task to the web version of Codex - Agent mode to give it full permission, with approval, or just chat with your project - The model used to choose between GPT-5 or the new GPT-5-Codex in low/medium/high versions

And here're the rates for Plus, Pro and Business accounts ↓ 30-150 messages /5 hours depending on the tasks using Plus... Which is enough for a lot of projects!

Very well, but I think Claude Code is better

Probably depends on the use case? Many of us have switched.

FYI, you can move Codex to the right sidebar just in case you weren't aware.

Nice, will do. Thanks for sharing!

Looks cool, but I'll stick to @warpdotdev. It works perfectly for me, and I can use all the LLMs I prefer to use.

Never tried it. Thanks for the feedback!

Good that it's included with ChatGPT but curious how well it actually works compared to tools built specifically for coding workflows

Give it a try. Many are switching from claude code to codex actually.

I am better stick to claude code 😃

Hmm do you have better results with it? Which languages?

how’s the rate limits with GPT-5-Codex?

A STRONG ? did you try it ? CC is miles ahjead.

Yes, I'm using it daily along Grok code in Cline and Gemini CLI. CC is way more expensive and the cost difference isn't justified in my usage.

Are you using Windows? If so, does it work well without WSL?

Yes, Windows user here. I was using the CLI in WSL before because the extension was clunky but now it seems to work pretty well in the ide and without WSL.

Oh ok, I've been using Codex IDE for a while now too, but I wanted to know someone else's experience and if it was worth using WSL. Thanks by the way 😊

Trying it now, cool !

Let me know how it goes!

A coding model tuned for both quick iterations and long refactors inside VS Code could change daily developer flow in a big way. It makes me wonder how fast teams will shift from add on copilots to fully integrated coding partners. What shift do you expect first?

I’m still happy with copilot

I'll use codex whenever they let me actually accept changes

Vs code extension is broken for windows

It was for me as well, I was using the CLI in the meantime... but now it works for some reason.

That good to know Paul. Have a backlog of things to fix.

Claude code works with normal IDE (JetBrains). Codex does not :(

Now 10x better at thinking and coding for you This is amazing

I’ve tried most every AI coding accelerator. Claude Code is a class of it’s own….the workflow is the secret sauce, and it’s very decent.

I've updated and am running it on two projects. The new thing is the deterministic thinking mode. It spends more time on more difficult tasks, creates better dynamic TODOS, and works longer on more tasks. 5-medium was good all by itself, and this is a strong upgrade.

GPT sucks at coding!

Check out self-hosted options. Total game changer for me.

Been using the VS Code extension for a few weeks and it's genuinely impressive. The integration feels seamless and it handles most coding tasks without breaking a sweat

easily a replacement if you're resourceful enough

Replacement of CC/cursor? If so yes, 100%.

Useless... I've been paying for "plus" for a long time. I sponsor them, and they're giving a nonsense limit on it. After one day of using, a limit.

nice, another option on the table. would be cool to see how it measures up alongside @QodoAI in VS Code. tools are evolving so fast it's hard to keep up.

It seems recently Grok has reduced context length a lot. Earlier it used to easily read upto 1000 lines of code now its just excerpts & grok says i have the truncated file. Anyone else facing it ? Chatgpt has somehow improved a lot more than Grok at code.

GPT-5-Codex is a game-changer for developers. Excited to see how AI is making coding faster, smarter, and more collaborative!

just getting into the coding side i use claude via my command prompt is this possible with chatgpt?

@elonmusk when is something like this coming to Grok? Add Grok Code with an IDE and no one will need to use any other product.

hasn't this been out for a bit? i've been using codex from the cli for a few days now i really dig it

How does this compare to Visual Studio Code + Copilot Pro+ + GPT5? Your example seems much faster, but I'm presuming you sped it up?

What about using it in Visual Studio? Is it possible too?

Why did you speed up the video to make it look more impressive? Misleading

Testing the Codex plugin. Seems like I need to approve every move. I guess I am missing something, but it's not usable as is for me.

Wow This looks Amazing
