Open-source magnetic tactile sensor for $5! 🧲 Researchers from New York University introduced a magnetic tactile sensor that's low-cost, and easy to fabricate, democratizing tactile sensing for robotics. Operating in unstructured environments like homes and offices requires robots to sense forces during physical interaction. Yet the lack of a... show more

the part that matters for factories is that a sensor this cheap can go on every gripper on the line, since plants only adopt hardware once it costs less than the scrap it prevents.

Contact is where these sensors die, so at $5 you just swap one instead of babying it. Does the paper say how many presses one lasts?

Can you change the pad's shape and reuse the trained model, or does each geometry need its own calibration?

This gives me an idea... Was wondering for a long while how to detect human touch in a silicone construction that should work underwater. Maybe embedding some magnets into the flexible silicone skin could lead to the motion detected by a magnetometer.

Humanoid robots can use this when shaking hands to adjust the experience to be more personal

Cool.

Very awesome

Cool robotic input device
