"perma offline mode" literally every emulator for consoles with local or online features has full support for them, usually also support for crossplay for hardware I love playing older games on official hardware, but let's not pretend that emulation isn't easily capable of this

MiSTer FPGA now has proper HDMI CEC support for some third-party hardware. Sorgelig spent a lot of time massaging the implementation I submitted. There are still some bugs but it's making progress. Features include power/wake/sleep display, device name advertising (MiSTer FPGA), and menu navigation. Maybe I'll make some hardware that leverages HDMI CEC so you don't need those terrible third-party clunky remotes ;)

I have something very special to share today! This is a hardware capture of maximqad's port of the Xash3D engine--which is compatible with the Half-Life engine--running on the Sega Dreamcast... ONLINE! Keep in mind this is EXTREMELY early in the days of the port, with no DC-specific graphics optimizations or hardware accelerated math routines yet, so performance still has a lot of room to drastically improve. Audio was literally just barely moved to the SPU for the first time just the other day too, so this is still all very incredibly new... ...but here it is! The engine that wouldn't even run without being on an emulator that also needed to emulate the extended 32MB RAM modification... now running on a stock Sega Dreamcast with online multiplayer connectivity and mouse and keyboard support! Fantastic work from maximqad! I really believe as this engine matures, it will be an incredibly powerful tool for Dreamcast developers and will potentially bring a lot of new software to the platform in the form of Half-Life engine mods!

Important to know that Postgres/MySQL on local SSD is *the* best way to get great performance. The reason it could get *even faster* boils down to abstraction boundaries. SSDs are built to be workload agnostic. They have their own controllers and garbage collectors meant to balance performance of many different I/O patterns. DBMS are written to support arbitrary backing I/O devices: SSD, HDD, or even a remote storage system. It's good that they're written to be broadly performant! The point of the paper was that, if you're willing to build something that specifically targets local SSDs (and even specific models of local SSDs) you can optimize the full DBMS -> OS -> hardware stack for the exact characteristics of a workload and hardware specifications. This is a classic tradeoff. You can usually get better performance as you narrow scope for specific hardware, architectures, etc. Maintainers of OSS must walk a careful balance of optimizing for performance while also maintaining wide compatibility. For the curious-minded, I wrote an interactive article on the history of I/O devices, and how that interplays with database performance:

Does literally anybody else do that shit while playing professionally? It's funny for a moment but it's also lowkey disrespectful to the person you're going up against. Nothing about this game warrants all that. Imagine Knee or Arslan doing that. Working on expanding RoTATE mode to support higher resolutions, and not just 240p. Looks like with the new memory controller, 480p is easily doable for those beautiful, hi-res shooooooomps games. Max limit is probably around 800x600. 720p likely out of reach.

It’s a bummer… but it was a MAJOR update from Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call today with Elon confirming that Hardware 3 will not be able to achieve Unsupervised FSD. “Unfortunately, Hardware 3, I wish it were otherwise, but Hardware 3 simply does not have the capabilities to achieve Unsupervised FSD. You know, we did think at one point it would have that, but relative to hardware, it has only 1/8 of the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4, and memory bandwidth is one of the key elements needed for Unsupervised FSD.” Tesla plans to fix it for customers who bought FSD by: A) Discounted trade-in toward a vehicle with full Hardware 4 OR B) Direct upgrade by replacing the HW3 computer and the cameras to bring the car to HW4 spec To make upgrades fast and scalable, Elon also told us that: “…we’re going to have to set up like, kind of microfactories or small factories in major metropolitan areas… So we basically need like many production lines to make the change.” He also said over time it makes sense to convert all HW3 cars to HW4 bc this is what will enable them to enter the Robotaxi fleet and have Unsupervised FSD. Sorry for HW3 Tesla owners… but thanks for the update Elon.

Every day is a fantastic day to be playing Counterstrike... ON THE SEGA DREAMCAST! What you are seeing is a couple minutes of video featuring online play captured directly from the real hardware! This monumental feat of engineering is to be credited to developer, maximqad, who has successfully ported the Xash3D engine, which is Half-Life compatible, to the little white box, with its 200Mhz SH4 CPU and whopping 16MB of system memory. With the engine has come Half-Life, Counterstrike, and the possibility of many others on DC. Unlike the last time you saw these games, though, they're now glitch-free and are fully playable, with plenty of room for further optimizations left! Speaking of gainz, one of the most interesting battle stories from this project has got to be maximqad offloading some of the engine's allocations for its BSP from system memory onto video memory, which the Dreamcast tends to have an abundance of, at 8MB, with support for a fantastic VQ hardware compression format.
