Something big is happening in robotics - and it’s hiding in plain sight. This post is not about dancing robots but in the data that powers them. Open robotics datasets have exploded this year, turning the field into a more scalable and collaborative ecosystem. In just two years, Hugging Face datasets grew from 11k to over 600k - and robotics is by far the fastest-growing segment. We went from 1k robotics datasets in 2024 to 27k in 2025! For comparison, text generation, the second-largest category, has only around 5k datasets in 2025. That gap is massive. Open datasets are important because robotics lives and dies by real-world robot data - video, actions, sensors, failures. By making this data easy to upload, reuse, and benchmark, researchers, startups, and large players are now releasing real-robot datasets that would have stayed locked inside labs just a few years ago. Major contributors include NVIDIA, LeRobot initiative, and a rapidly growing maker community. While Figure and Boston Dynamics hide their humanoids behind closed doors, Chinese companies have massive showrooms open to the public. Today may be the ImageNet moment for robotics. RT-X: the largest open-source robot dataset ever compiled, across 33 institutes, 22 robot hardware, 527 skills, and 1M episodes. Why is robotics lagging so far behind NLP, vision, and other AI domains? Data scarcity is the main culprit to blame, among other difficulties. Unlike text, images, and videos, you cannot download mass amounts of onboard robot control data from the internet. They simply don't exist in the wild. 11 yrs ago, ImageNet kicked off the deep learning revolution. 3-4 yrs ago, internet-scale data fueled the first GPTs and Diffusions that define this era of foundation models. I think 2023 is finally the year for robotics to scale up. Robot foundation models like VIMA ( my team's work at NVIDIA) and RT-1/2 ( Google DeepMind's effort) are extremely data hungry. While massively parallel simulations like NVIDIA IsaacGym & Omniverse can alleviate the problem to some extent, it's still not quite enough to bridge the gap to the messy, physical world. This new dataset is not just a technical contribution. I also see it as a commendable effort to overcome institutional bureaucracies and unite researchers from around the world to tackle a grand challenge together. Had an amazing time at the Stanford Robotics Center Launch event this Saturday! The Packard building’s underground floor has been transformed into a bright new robotics lab, complete with a mocap room, specialized spaces for domestic, field, and surgical robots, and even an aquarium in progress for the Ocean One bot! Check out the videos below—there’s one of me operating a Da Vinci surgical robot 🤖 Robotics truly embodies interdisciplinary collaboration, pulling together expertise from electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, materials science, HCI, and design. It’s the kind of field where no single department could drive research forward alone. This new center is an incredible resource to unite researchers, and I have to admit, I’m a bit envious of the PhD students who get to work in such an inspiring environment! Look forward to more great research work from Stanford!

A simple MPC controller for path tracking implemented in python. Few resources actually teach it without assuming a PhD first. This open-source project does exactly that: An iterative MPC tracking controller (built with CVXPY and MuJoCo) that shows how to make a robot (or autonomous vehicle) follow a path and avoid obstacles in real time. → Autonomous logistics, robot navigation, vehicle control; there's a path-following algorithm behind all of it. → Most implementations are black boxes. This one shows you what's actually happening. → It uses convex optimization (no non-linear solver), and still handles real vehicle physics through iterative linearization. What makes it practical is that you can run it with the mushr car model in MuJoCo, or headless without any physics simulation if you just want to understand the logic. The next manipulation tool may not live on your screen. It may stand in front of you look into your eyes and convince you that it understands. Would you rather face a humanoid robot strong enough to hurt you or one designed well enough to make you trust it? This robot copies blinking, eye contact, head movement and facial expressions to create the illusion of human presence. That may look impressive but it also opens a darker question. When a machine can look concerned appear friendly and imitate emotion people may start trusting signals that contain no real feeling no empathy and no moral responsibility.
