Playing around with using the Shrinkwrap modifier on a rig's Root bone to stick it to a moving surface.

This is mesmerizing. Does it require a lot of set up?

Nope, super easy. Just add the Shrinkwrap modifier to the Root targeted to the object you wanna pin them to, in Project mode. You can check Align to Normal to have it rotate to face the object too.

Wow... ✨️

what if there was a second constraint that keeps his hips above his feet? would it look like hes keeping his balance?

Possible, yeah. An Empty with the same shrinkwrap offset above the root but not aligned to the Normals, then maybe an IK chain that points the torso towards it so you get a pseudo-procedural lean.

:0 i'll stick u to a moving surface

Don't make promises you can't back up

That is so smart what the heck

Wait what Thanks for the crazy tip haha!

interesting👀

A jump would be a useful next test: does fading the constraint's Influence out for takeoff and back in for landing give a clean hand-off, or does the moving surface cause a snap?

never thought of it, thanks

Does the Shrinkwrap bone constraint handle sudden normal flips when the surface geometry twists, or do you constrain an auxiliary alignment target to keep the character up-vector stabilized?

imo lock rotation with foot colision is way to go

pretty smart

Bro thinks he is spider man

Looks like a intro to a music video with the phychedelic wave and walking defying gravity haha

T' animation is slightly off; when walking, a person stabilizes their upright position by properly bending their legs and feet

That is so fucking cool.

Looks like shit

woah you can do that? im trying that right this second

wait thats genius

crazy tech for walking scenes unlocked

I... Never thought about this... This is brilliant.

huh, i tried that once and the root bone just yeeted itself into the void like it had somewhere better to be

You and your walking in the air with the weird floating swerving tiled floor

And then animating the influence of the shrink wrap on the foot IK bones based on the distance from the root bone as a driver to automatically do foot placement on bumpy ground.

Can I ask how you made the surface?

Nice!
