Last week Monday, I had the honor of being invited by Uber to speak at one of their events with over a hundred Uber staff in attendance! Joann Wu who reached out to me sometime in October last year inviting me to speak at the event, highlighted the 3 Figma prototypes I created in the past she would want me to demo at the show and tell event. I pointed out the crucial role prototyping plays in product development. This led to an experience I had sometime in 2021 when I was approached by a client with a product idea they struggled to fully articulate. After creating a quick mockup in Figma, the client still struggled to fully grasp the concept. To bridge this gap, I developed a functional prototype that brought their vision to life. This not only enhanced their understanding but also provided the clarity they needed to showcase the product’s potential. Eventually, they used the prototype to demo their idea and successfully secure their first round of funding from an Angel investor. Prototyping turns ideas into something real—something you can see, test, and refine. It’s a design language that helps teams align, uncover insights, and bring concepts to life in a way that words alone can’t. I am quitting Figma prototype... I’m done prototyping the traditional way. The slow way. The “let me finish all the flows first” way. AI has made traditional prototyping the lowest-leverage part of design. Today, with AI I can: • generate first-pass layouts • spin up variants instantly • explore flows faster than I ever could manually • handle repetitive UI work So if you are still going to be spending most of your time dragging frames and wiring interactions like i did in this video, I just left you behind.. SORRY. I’m not quitting design. I’m doubling down on: • problem framing • systems thinking • research synthesis • decision-making • shipping faster with AI as a multiplier There is a shift currently happening and its not AI vs designers. Make your Figma designs more realistic with this simple plugin One thing I always prioritize in my Figma designs is realism— I love to make every design feel like the final product of cos while considering actual user feedback and making sure every detail aligns with how real people would interact with the app after production. But if you’ve ever presented a prototype, you’ve probably heard some funny questions like: ❓ “Why do all the thumbnails have the same image?” ❓ “Why is every name just ‘User’s Name’ or ‘Person’s Name’?” That’s when I discovered the Content Reel plugin in Figma. figma "god mode" just leaked.. this week i tried the future of autonomous design: claude connected directly to the figma api with full edit access.. yes it can design in figma what does it mean? you prompt, it designs. it’s like having a team of designers inside figma working with you and 10x ing your capacity ​why is this different? ​official figma ai/mcp only "reads" files to help devs. this tool (unofficial MCP) "writes" in figma to replace manual labor. hours of grinding turned into seconds of waiting ​imagine this: - ​prompt to design: generate a new screen based on your design or not - prompt to flow: generate end to end user journeys - iteration: create multiple variations in one click - design system: it can use your components to create new screens - ​zero click management: auto layout, component creation, deduplication handled by prompt - ​universal control: if you can do it in figma, it can do it for you ​the impact ​if figma officially releases this, almost every existing plugin becomes obsolete overnight it feels like figma on steroids. i’m still processing whether i feel empowered or replaced ​full tutorial in this article from Mark A. Code-first prototypes are fast to build. Getting feedback on them is not. A design lead can't leave a comment on one specific state. An engineer can't see the full flow at a glance. The thing that makes a prototype great for building makes it awkward for aligning. So Amy Lima and I built a skill for that (well, mostly Amy). It takes a live localhost prototype and brings it into Figma. Each flow broken out into its own frame, built from your design system components, annotated with the interaction and implementation details. Now the canvas is where you review and align. We refined it live in the video too! My favorite part is a habit I like to lean on: make the agent take one more round trip to validate its own work before it claims it's done. AI sometimes has the tendency to confidently tell you the job's finished when it isn't. Thanks to Amy and the whole Figma crew for allowing me to be a part of this!

Prototyping can be fun in Figma and a nightmare when you are new to it. As a self-taught designer, I had to figure everything out the hard way. I thought I had seen it all when I was learning Adobe Photoshop back then in 2012. I discovered Figma four years ago and decided to explore the tool since I had been using Adobe XD and Sketch to create some mockups. When I discovered Figma, I created the prototype I shared in my last post just because it popped into my head when I was in the bathroom 😂. I rushed out and decided to try it immediately, more like a freestyle thing and was never intended to be a real product but could be modified into becoming one if the need arises. But many misunderstood the point, which was using the video to convey a message to other young designers never to skip the process, else you will create the wrong MVP. Prototyping used to scare me. So I tried to escape it. I remember when I first started designing in Figma, prototyping felt like a mountain I didn’t want to climb. It was that one thing most designers quietly avoided some even said it’s not necessary 😄. I searched for shortcuts. Tried ProtoPie. Looked into Principle. Hoped one of them would save me the trouble. But they all felt disconnected. Too complex. Or just not Figma. So I made a decision: If I’m designing in Figma, I’m prototyping in Figma too. That meant doing everything, product planning, ideation, low-fi, high-fi, and interaction flows all in one tool. No more bouncing around. No more excuses. The first nut to crack? A loading effect. It took me 4 days to figure out. I searched everywhere, YouTube had nothing at the time. But I cracked it just one morning I saw myself trying it out in my dream. Woke up immediately and it was 4am, tried it and it worked. And that changed everything. Prototyping became the one language I could use to explain my designs… without explaining. Today, every prototype I create lives and breathes in Figma. Most of them can either be creative exploration or me trying to fix a broken user experience. No exports. No guesswork. Just clean, clickable experiences. It wasn’t easy. But I’m glad I stopped running from it. Because I would’ve missed out on one skill that: ✅ Earned my first £95K within 7 months while in UK. ✅ Got Uber to reach out to speak about interactive design. ✅ Worked with so many client even from Pakistan. ✅ Watched by more than 1 million people in the first 6 months I started sharing interactive designs. ✅ Prototyping landed me a 9-month contract just 3 days after getting laid off last year. ✅ Funny how the skill I once ran from helped me grow from 500 to 50,000 followers in 7 months. I interviewed Don Norman in an honest conversation (that has now gone viral). It's a fallacy that designers only need to focus on design; business knowledge is too important. Don discussed with me: Design education needs to change to focus on broader skills and design thinking, they often lack the understanding of how the world works and are only trained with an art basis. Understanding business operations and economics is crucial for making a difference in the world. What are your 2c on this?

I built a variant of Matt Pocock's grilling skill dedicated to frontend and it has improved how I build new apps and components. The general idea: 1. Use /grilling and /prototype as a base 2. Tell Claude to build 5 WILDLY different prototypes 3. Tell Claude to include a picker that lets you switch between each variant live 4. Each round you select your favorite(s) + leave feedback, and Claude will walk down each branch of the design tree, helping you zoom in on your desired design And THEN, I went and added it to /wayfinder, so whenever I make a new map and there's novel frontend work, a ticket is created specifically referencing that /grilling-frontend-prototyping needs to be invoked. This will not be the last time I build a cool skill and add it to Wayfinder; this is a very powerful pattern for planning work. You can find my skill here:
