Here is a quick 1 minute clip from "The Masters of Trading" Dan Zanger interview back in 2005. Dan highlights some very important points which still hold true today and even more so in this current 2025 market. - Not to be in the market all the time - Less trading - Limit exposure ( 3 - 4 positions max) - Stalk the market and let it set up - Anticipate 2 - 3 big trend moves per year. ( 8 - 12 weeks per move ) - Let it set up all over again. Trade less! A big part of my strategy is concentrated positions and to hit these positions when the deck is stacked in my favor. In my last podcast, I had mentioned a custom Google sheet that I maintain to get a sense of market breadth. Not sure why I didn't open it up earlier but here it is - I have enlisted stocks above 1000Cr market cap in the Tickers sheet. A script runs at different times in the day to pick up aggregates that are appended to the History sheet. Let me know if you find any errors in the formulae or have suggestions for new additions that might be insightful. Also curious to hear about how you use the data in this sheet for your own trades. I personally rely on the % of stocks above 40DMA number to figure out strength in the market. During periods where I am not actively going through charts, I check if this number is above or below 40 to get a general sense of whether this is a strong market or not. Happy trading! 😃

How did I handle the recent pullback in U.S. stocks? Did I sell the top? 🙅🏻‍♂️ No. Did I hedge perfectly before the market turned? 🙅🏻‍♂️ No. Did I rush to short the market? 🙅🏻‍♂️ No. In my June 7 JLA Weekly Reports, right after the market had pulled back sharply, I wrote: “This pullback looks more like mean reversion after a strong advance, rather than a confirmed major top, crash, or bear market.” Not because I had a crystal ball 🔮 But because the evidence at the time did not support a broad market breakdown. $QQQ had pulled back hard. Semiconductors and AI hardware names were under pressure. Many extended stocks saw sharp profit-taking. But the bigger picture was still intact. $RSP was not collapsing. Market breadth had not broken down aggressively. The Net High / Low Ratio was still holding up. The QQQ weekly chart still looked like a normal pullback after a strong advance. So my base case was clear: This was more likely a reset than the start of a crash. 🔄 A few days later, the market found a low after a 6-day pullback and repaired most of the damage, moving back close to new highs. But the real lesson is not “I was right.” The real lesson is this: When the market pulls back sharply, you need a framework to separate a normal reset from a true character change. That is also why I did not rush to short the market. Shorting a pullback inside a strong uptrend is extremely difficult. When your focus is on the short side, you can easily miss the bigger opportunity: Preparing for the next group of leaders. Even worse, you may lose your winning positions during the process — and when the market recovers, you are forced to buy them back at higher prices. Most traders never do. Because human nature makes it very difficult to sell low and buy back higher. Your mind says: “I’ll wait for another pullback.” Your ego says: “I don’t want to chase.” And your finger simply cannot press the buy button. That is how traders lose their best positions and miss the next group of leaders. 🎯 In strong markets, sharp pullbacks are not always bearish. Sometimes they are necessary. They shake out weak hands, reset sentiment, and reveal where institutional demand still exists. That is why, after a market reset, I focus on the stocks that repair first. Those are often the names with real relative strength — and the ones most likely to lead the next move higher. I spent and hour of my Saturday reviewing hundreds of charts. These are the setups that stood out and what you should focus on this week Friday changed the tone of this market. The AI trade is under pressure. Software is pulling back. Relative strength is starting to stand out. $GOOGL held up. $AAPL barely cracked. $C continues to show strength while growth stocks unwind. Here’s the watchlist and recording: $SPX: One of the ugliest days we've seen in months. Closed near the lows after breaking the 20-day. 7330-7290 is the first support zone. Below that opens 7273 and potentially 7150. $QQQ: Nearly 5% down on Friday. AI leadership is under pressure. Watching 695 support closely. $IWM: Back to 280 support. Usually the stocks with the most momentum that have been showing resilience are the ones that tend to do the best. But during deeper corrections and longer lasting corrections when you really have a lot of things that get beaten down. In those scenarios, it's the most beaten down names that usually do best in the first phase of the rally once you get a rally. Obviously it depends, just because the stock has been holding up doesn't mean it, has to go up when the market correction ends. It depends on the momentum. Like if you look at LI and XPEV, they're in big flags and every market dip, they just bounce back. So do your own thinking. During deep and long corrections, deep and or long corrections its the beaten down names that generally do best, at least the first part of the ensuing rally. But in the like 5-8% corrections in an uptrend, it's usually the ones that hold up the best. The last time we saw a good example of it was AMD and NVDA back in October, right? They showed resilience and then once the market pressure ended, just shot straight up. Two mega cap stocks. AMD went up 50% in a month and a half. NVDA I didn't trade, I passed on this one, but this one went up 60%.”

Nasdaq had a big run, multi-month run. You wanna buy breakouts when the market comes out of a multi-month sideways consolidation or a multi-month sell-off. Here, good time to buy breakouts. Here, not so much. And that's why it's failed. The setup itself was okay, but once the market is straight up for multiple months, you gotta be careful buying breakouts. The setups themselves were okay. But the market started pulling back mid-February and everything failed. When is the best time to buy breakouts? Chat, come on. Come on, chat. When is the best time to buy breakouts? What do we want to see in the moving averages? After correction? Yeah, but the moving averages. When the 10-day is above the 20-day, yeah, more. Rising 10-day, 20-day. We want to see the 10-day above the 20-day, and both the 10-day and 20-day need to be rising. Or one of them can be sideways, but at least one of them needs to be rising. That's when you have good conditions, generally, for breakouts. In late February, the 10-day had started sloping down, the 20-day was sideways. So that was a warning sign. That you shouldn't buy breakouts. NIO, big move, pulled back to the 10-day, started building a flag and it went straight up. Why did it go straight up? Well, because the market had just come out of a multi-month correction. And that was the start of a multi-month move. And NIO had shown strength all the way. That's a good time to buy breakouts, when the market comes out of a multi-month sideways or multi-month correction. Not when the market has already run for two, three months straight up, and it's starting to lose momentum. Not a good time to buy breakouts.”

People post setups all the time, and this is the hard part — identifying a really good setup versus something that’s random and mediocre. Because that’s gonna also reflect on your results. If you trade the random setups, your results are gonna be random too. You want to find the outlier stocks. You want to see if it has relative strength. The best time to trade this breakout method is after a pullback in the markets. You want to see the stocks that held up the most — the ones that had big moves previously and held up the most. And if you master this setup, if you trade this setup coming out of a small correction, like say a 5-10 or 15% correction in the overall indices, that’s almost like free money for this type of setup. Because if you can identify the stocks that held up the most during the correction — that maybe went down initially but then stopped going down as the correction went on, and actually started building higher lows — that’s telling you something. If you have a stock that’s gone up a lot, and then it stops going down when the market goes down, you know the stock is trying to tell you something. And that’s what leading stocks do. Like every bull market, this is obviously the case. I’m gonna talk more about it later. You obviously need an up-trending or sideways market to trade this method. You have leading stocks — the stocks that go up the most and are the most liquid. And those are really the stocks you want to trade. They’re mostly mid and large caps, but even a small cap can be a leading stock. Those are really the stocks that don’t go down when the market goes down. It’s like you try to push a tennis ball underwater — it just pops back up. And those are the type of stocks you want to find when trading this method.”
