Even simpler... Shadows! This is all just an emulation and not a physically accurate caustics simulation. So it's not going to give you proper refractive results, but it gets you enough of the way there without spending hours for a single clean frame 🙏

The key is shadow path information. Just doing a little bit of funky wand waving to each channels shadow info and viola! :)

You can use a "Dispersion Lens" in front of your camera in Shaders Plus, to create realistic, physical, in-camera Chromatic Aberrations! :D Fun fact, before the caustics were added, "Shaders Plus" was originally just going to be a dispersion shader! 🤪 #b3d #blender3d #blender

I recreated the caustics sequences in Blade Runner in Blender, using Shaders Plus' Real-Time Caustics, and each frame took only roughly 20s per scene to render on an RTX 3080! 🤠 You can check out Shaders Plus here! :) #blender3d #b3d

This is my 4th attempt trying to get realistic caustics, and I think I finally succeeded💪🏻 The coolest part? The caustics change based on the wave behavior above. They move with the waves, and choppier waters create more distortion. The scale, intensity, distortion and attenuation can all be tuned to your tastes.
