The Telegram channel “Byt Ili” conducted a detailed analysis of the performance of Russian air defense during yesterday’s Ukrainian drone raid on Moscow. It was the first time that the operation of Russian air defense could be observed almost in real time. Key conclusions from the analysis: “Perhaps the most surprising thing for me in today’s strike on the Moscow oil refinery is the number of missed interceptions by Russian air defense systems against Ukrainian UAVs. In this compilation, I’ve specifically cut together the misses by ‘Pantsirs’. The selection is not complete. For the first time, we were able to observe in real time how Russian air defense operates during large-scale drone raids. And I have no rational explanation for why it performs THIS poorly. Yan Matveev described it most succinctly: ‘Air defense systems were deployed right in the city, missiles are flying chaotically in all directions and missing their targets; the threat from them is no less (and perhaps even greater) than from the drones themselves.’ But this still doesn’t answer the question: why is it like this? After all, these are UAVs flying at low speed — not cruise missiles, and certainly not ballistic ones. This can hardly even be described as a combined strike designed to overwhelm air defenses. The only fast-moving targets here were a few jet-powered UAVs like “Bars,” and there were very few of them. This is nowhere near the level of overload seen in Ukrainian air defenses during Russian combined missile strikes. And yet, even a strike of this scale creates chaos and confusion for Russian air defenses. It also leads to the conclusion that ‘Pantsir’ systems perform rather poorly against UAVs. Now it becomes clear why there is such a shortage of Pantsir missiles — because even slow Ukrainian drones sometimes cannot be shot down with two missiles. This is shown in videos 1 and 2 — two misses by a Pantsir against a single UAV, which ultimately hits its target. When Ukraine addresses partners, requesting air defense systems that they have in warehouses and bases but that are needed here, in Ukraine, to protect lives, we are talking about genuine allied action. We in Ukraine value the efforts of all leaders and states who are truly active, keep their promises, and work hard to improve the capabilities of our air shield. Russian terrorists have already had enough time—years—to destroy Ukrainian life. This year cannot be a year of further discussions. Everything is very specific. Ukraine needs air defense, and partners can help us with that. We need artillery, and the world has it. Only a sufficient number of air defense systems and fighter jets can drive the Russian aviation away. Decisions must be made. And they are possible. Everyone around the world who truly desires peace must not be afraid to demonstrate force in order to defend life.

Ukrainian interceptor drones are now capable of autonomously shooting down Russian Shahed drones. A Brave1 developer has created a technology that automates 95% of the interception process - from launch to target destruction. The system has successfully undergone combat testing in Kharkiv region. The operator monitors targets in real time, selects a target, and authorizes the strike. The system then independently guides the drone to the target, autonomously identifies it, and carries out the interception. "Autonomy is one of the key directions in the development of modern air defense. Such technologies make it possible to respond more quickly to massive attacks and protect Ukrainian cities more effectively," said Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov Mykhailo Fedorov.

PURL is the program that allows us to buy Patriot missiles in the U.S. and other weapons that protect Ukrainians from Russian attacks, of course. Most of the air defense missiles that can stop Russian ballistic missiles come to us thanks to PURL. And PURL exists because of Europe – it’s true – Europe is paying for our ability to stop ballistic attacks. Thanks to everyone who helps us. Thank you! And honestly, one of the worst things a leader can hear in wartime is a report from the Air Force commander saying: the air defense units are empty – they used their missiles to stop Russian strikes, and there was no resupply. And intelligence says – a new massive attack may come in a day or two. Sometimes we manage to deliver new missiles for our Patriots or NASAMS just before an attack, and sometimes – at the last, very last moment. Thank you to every European leader who invests in PURL and in other joint defense programs. And I’m proud of our soldiers who repel Russian attacks, and of our logistics teams who have kept this system working for 4 years. And I am proud of our nation. And it is the courage and resilience of Ukrainians that make the difference. Our people deserve gratitude. They deserve respect.

The peninsula has very constricted supply lines, with single road and rail connection through the narrow isthmus to the north and Kerch Strait Bridge connecting Crimea to Russian mainland to the east. Ukrainians have reportedly now taken control of the isthmus route from the air and have been attacking the bridge repeatedly over the past three years. Under these circumstances, it would not be at all surprising if Russian command decided at some point in the coming year that their position in Crimea was untenable and began to withdraw forces there, just as it has already withdrawn the bulk of its navy.

Losses of expensive equipment for the IDF are becoming routine. In the Shomera area, a Hezbollah FPV drone struck at least the third Iron Dome air defense system launcher in a month. The video was filmed on May 18, but published today. Based on the footage, the drone hit the containers with air defense missiles directly again: if they're not empty, this usually leads to detonation and destruction. Notably, all the launchers struck by Hezbollah were deployed near the Lebanese border. The IDF is trying to protect border settlements this way: with air defense positioned further away, it simply doesn't have time to react to a launch. 🖍Overall, this is another illustration of how, amid the "drone revolution," traditional air defense systems increasingly turn from hunter into prey. Last night, and throughout this week, our air defense forces, mobile fire groups, and all air defense units worked to protect Ukrainians from Russian aerial terror. Over 30 strike drones were shot down in a single night. In total, over the course of the week, Russia has used more than 500 guided aerial bombs, nearly 660 strike drones, and approximately 120 missiles of various types against us. No other country in the world has ever faced such attacks on a daily basis for such a long time. Yet, our state has stood firm. Our armed forces continue to fight the aggressor, our people are working for the sake of a strong Ukraine, and our partners support us. Together, we are the force that will compel Russia to seek a just peace and restore peace and security in Europe. I am grateful to everyone who understands this and supports us.

Ukrainians understood long ago that NATO would not close our skies. But look: Ukraine had no weapons at the beginning of the full-scale war in 2022, and now, in 2026, Ukrainian drones are striking targets deep in Russia’s Ural, while Putin is afraid to hold a military parade on Red Square in Moscow without extraordinary security measures. Ukraine is now helping strengthen air defense systems in the Middle East through our battlefield experience and technological expertise, and is a strategic partner for countries in that region. Ukraine tries to shoot down every possible Russian drone, including those flying toward neighboring countries such as Romania, Moldova, and Poland. Ukraine is building a modern air defense architecture that will help protect not only Ukraine, but also our neighbors from Russian drones and missiles. It is important to help Ukraine strengthen our air defense and produce interceptor missiles. This will also strengthen Europe’s defense against Russia.

Recovery efforts are underway in our regions following last night’s massive Russian attack. In Zaporizhzhia and Poltava, ordinary apartment buildings were damaged, and fires broke out. Nearly 40 drones were launched against Shostka in the Sumy region. In Slatyne, in the Kharkiv region, a drone struck an electric train. Overall, damage has been reported in 11 regions. As of now, unfortunately, four people have been reported killed in the attack. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Dozens more have been injured, including children. In total, there were over 390 strike drones and 34 missiles of various types – ballistic, cruise, and guided air-launched missiles. These numbers clearly show that more protection is needed to save lives from Russian strikes. It is important to continue supporting Ukraine. It is important that all agreements on air defense are implemented on time. And it is important that Europe is able to produce the necessary number of air defense missiles to protect itself against any threats. Thank you to everyone who is helping strengthen the defense of Ukraine’s skies!

Many leaders, representatives of states and international organizations, as well as civil society leaders, expressed solidarity with Ukraine and Kharkiv and condemned Russian terror. It is important that such condemnation results in fair consequences. To finally receive a sufficient number of air defense systems to protect Ukraine and our cities. For partners to demonstrate sufficient decisiveness to support preemptive protection against Russian terrorists.
