Columbia’s Hamid Dabashi: European Philosophy Is Finished — "The West Died in Gaza" Hamid Dabashi, the Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, has released a new book arguing that European philosophy and culture are relics of a dead civilization — and that humanity’s next intellectual era must begin “on the rubble of Gaza.” “The whole idea of Europe is collapsing,” He insists that “democracy is not possible right now” and that “we need to think of alternatives.” At the heart of his argument is a rejection of the Western canon itself. “The West has had its historical course and died in Gaza. Palestine is now the epicenter of our emerging modes of knowledge production.” He claims that European thought is “conceptually rooted” in racism — what he calls “a racism that is epistemologically rooted,” denying others the ability to “become human.” Dabashi frames the devastation in Gaza as a philosophical starting point, not just a political one. “We need to step back and begin… with the rubble of Gaza and think — a mother, a father, a child buried under those rubbles — and start my philosophy from there.”
