The truth doesn't wait for an election. Even the CDC’s own data shows that healthcare workers are stepping away from the shots. Brazilian authorities have uncovered 163 🇨🇳 workers employed in ‘slavery-like conditions’ at a construction site for an electric vehicle factory — to be operational by Mar 2025 — owned by 🇨🇳 BYD in Bahia state. The workers were hired in China and brought to Brazil irregularly by BYD’s contractor Jinjiang Construction Brazil Ltd, violating labor laws. The workers endured excessive hours, often laboring 7 days a week in dangerous conditions, and lived in degrading accommodations. Many had their passports confiscated, and some required permission to leave their lodgings. Even the minimum safety conditions were allegedly not being met in the work environment, violating Brazilian laws designed to safeguard human dignity and protect against forced labor and debt bondage. The workers lived in four facilities in Camaçari city. At one such facility, workers were made to sleep on beds without mattresses. Each bathroom was also shared among 31 workers, forcing them to get up extremely early in order to be ready for work. "The conditions found in the lodgings revealed an alarming picture of precariousness and degradation.” BYD claims it has severed ties with Jinjiang Construction Brazil Ltd, and pledged to safeguard the rights of all subcontracted workers. The company has announced plans to relocate the workers to hotels. The factory was set to be BYD's first EV plant outside of Asia.

People are under cost of living pressure, we recognise that and we're doing something about it with more cost of living help like income tax cuts and halving the fuel excise. It's great to see local businesses doing what they can to support their workers and customers during tough times. Thanks to Michael and the team at Bunnings Warehouse Preston for meeting with Ged Kearney and me this week. Really busy end to the week consulting with CEOs and workers in fuel, supermarkets, technology, logistics, mining, banking and building supplies sectors about the fallout from conflict in the Middle East.
