Robots cleaning your cars! 🧼 The Autowash Robotics Operating System went into commercial operation this month at their Lakeside site in Wheat Ridge, after around 14 months of development. Here's what happens when you pull in. The system scans the car in 3D first, reading shape, dimensions, contours and...

Those KUKAs must love being in such a humid environment all the time. 😬

This might be the most over engineered i have seen for a long time. 😁

That’s one of the first businesses that was automated. Why did they just complicate the process?

This is the tech we could have had in 1990 when cameras and water were invented.

Just used it today for the second time. It’s not that thorough imho, but still a fairly decent wash.

Looks slow

My carwash also does the underside of the car. So this would work as a summer carwash, but in the winter, you would also like a salt-free under side. 🤷‍♂️

take touchless car washing, a system that guarantees no mechanical conflict with the working area, un-solve that problem by using industrial arms that could rip the roof off that porsche like opening a soda can, then try to re-solve it with probably a vibe-coded app

Good mimicked service, but today’s car wash technology doesnt really scratch a car. Touch less is a good psychological thing for people who cares about imaginary scratches. Robotics can clean car better, but you need it to touch the car.

Pretty cool! Betting it uses less water overall as well. Only thing missing is some kind of brusher system because not everything can get off from just spray, in my opinion.

3D scanning before the wash is a nice touch — most car washes still just guess at your car's shape.

Don't they already have car washes that do that?

Scanning roof boxes and spoilers before planning the wash is the detail that stands out. Those everyday accessories make perception and clearance much more interesting than running a fixed spray pattern.

Robots that climb skyscrapers to clean and inspect them! 🧼 Verobotics has built autonomous robots that clean and scan building exteriors, allowing building owners to proactively maintain and upkeep their buildings faster, cheaper, and smarter. The problem is decades old. The only way to clean or inspect a building's exterior has been to lower a person from a BMU (Building Maintenance Unit) at the top of the building. BMUs are heavy, can be out of service, complicated to operate, and limit cleaning to a couple of times per year. Their robots are lightweight, portable, and need no equipment on the roof. One person can deploy multiple robots to the building's facades and let the robots do the rest. Once they're done, the building owner not only has a clean building but also a digital twin of the building exterior for documenting health and identifying issues before they become risks. Robot spots a crack? Noted! They're equipped with onboard cameras that scan the surface, detect window frames to crawl over, and ensure not a spot is missed. That means a consistent result and thorough inspection every time. Onboard sensors continuously detect motion, location, and the surface beneath and around it. The data feeds to a hub that analyzes the surface in real time, building datasets that become the backbone of a digital twin for predictive maintenance. Love seeing the specialized robots bringing value from day 0! :) ~~ ♻️ Join the weekly robotics newsletter, and never miss any news →

A robot that swims underwater, then flies straight out of it! 🦢 Water is 1,000 times denser than air. Moving through one or the other normally means two completely different machines. Around 100 bird species disagree. Loons, gulls, puffins and petrels dive after prey, then leap back into the sky. Engineers at MIT and EPFL built a robot that does the same thing. It's a flapping-wing aerial-aquatic vehicle, it weighs under 300 grams, and the results are out in Science. Raphael Zufferey who runs the AURA Lab at MIT, is lead author. A waterproof motor drives a crankshaft that pumps two flexible wings up and down at set frequencies, and a motorised tail changes angle to climb or dive. The wing membranes are coated with hydrophobic nanoparticles so water sheds off them. Wing flexibility turned out to be the whole game. Flexible enough to keep flapping amplitude low in water, firm enough to hold the robot up in air. → Swims at almost 1 m/s flapping at around 5 Hz → Flies at around 6 m/s at a similar frequency, close to real diving birds → The water-to-air transition needs a pitch of around 70°. Shallower and the wingtips catch the surface, steeper and it falls back in My favourite finding is the one about feet. Puffins and ducks paddle at the surface to get airborne, so the team assumed a robot would need something equivalent. It doesn't. Wings and tail alone are enough. Funded in part by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship 🇵🇱 Read more here: ~~ ♻️ Join the weekly robotics newsletter, and never miss any news →

Trained a humanoid entirely in a 3D scan of the office. Zero real-world fine-tuning. It just walked in and worked. RL needs hundreds of thousands of attempts, and real robots can't afford to crash. A misjudged gap or a glass door collision breaks hardware and costs hours resetting. So you train in a sim. But sim policies usually train on randomized, untextured geometry; depth is easy to fake. The robot learns structure, not the real world: no materials, no lighting, no idea what anything actually is. RGB cameras carry all of that but training RGB policies in generic fake worlds won’t generalize to the real world. Niantic Spatial 🌎 Scaniverse reconstructs your scan of the real deployment site. One 360° camera walkthrough → photorealistic 3D Gaussian splat at metric scale → collision mesh pulled from the same reconstruction, so vision and physics match exactly. Drops straight into NVIDIA Isaac Sim/Lab, no manual conversion. Flexion simulation-first approach then seamlessly enables the training of RGB-only nav policies inside that reconstruction. With added domain randomization + large image encoders for robustness, this deploys straight to hardware. No real-world fine-tuning. Deployment: months of on-site adaptation → days. Tune into the NVIDIA livestream on 12 August to hear how these companies are closing the sim2real gap: NVIDIA Robotics ~~ ♻️ Join the weekly robotics newsletter, and never miss any news →
