🚨 THE BIGGEST BOTTLENECK IN AI ISN'T COMPUTING POWER ANYMORE IT'S MOVING DATA. Instead of laying new cables, Chinese researchers have upgraded existing fiber infrastructure by doing two things at once: Using three wavelength bands (C + L + S) instead of the usual two. Using four cores inside each fiber instead of one. Each core acts like an independent highway, and each band acts like an extra lane on that highway. Together, they’ve reportedly increased transmission capacity per core by nearly 50% and overall data throughput by up to 5×. This matters enormously for AI. Modern AI clusters move terabits of data per second between thousands of GPUs. The biggest bottleneck is often not the chips themselves, but moving data fast enough between them. If you can push 5× more data through the same physical cables, you can train bigger models faster and reduce network congestion. Why this is significant: • It shows multi-core + extended spectrum technology moving from labs into real-world commercial use • The system has already run over 35 km of existing telecom network • It could be especially useful for submarine cables and large-scale data center interconnects • China is also eyeing it for its “Eastern Data, Western Computing” project The deeper implication: We’re reaching the physical limits of how much data we can push through single-core fibers using traditional methods. By combining spatial multiplexing (multiple cores) with spectral multiplexing (more wavelength bands), engineers are finding new ways to keep scaling bandwidth without having to dig up the planet to lay new cables. This kind of breakthrough is quiet but foundational it’s the kind of infrastructure upgrade that will determine how fast AI and cloud computing can actually grow in the coming years. Using seismic waves recorded by stations buried in Antarctic ice, researchers have created the highest-resolution map yet of the boundary between Earth’s mantle and outer core nearly 3,000 km beneath our feet. They discovered thin but widespread patches of dense material that dramatically slow down seismic waves. The most likely explanation: these are fragments of ancient oceanic crust that sank into the deep mantle long ago and have been moved around by convection currents for hundreds of millions of years. In some places, these structures rise up to five times higher than Mount Everest. 🚨 BMW HAS SOLVED ONE OF HYDROGEN’S BIGGEST PACKAGING PROBLEMS. The company has developed a new “Hydrogen Flat Storage” system for the iX5 that uses seven slim hydrogen tanks instead of two large ones. This flat design fits into the same space as the high-voltage battery pack used in the electric iX5. This is significant because it allows BMW to build the hydrogen-powered iX5 on the same production line as petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions without major changes to the factory or vehicle architecture. The system stores 7kg of hydrogen at 700 bar and gives the iX5 an estimated range of 385 miles. BMW plans to start series production of the iX5 Hydrogen in 2028, using a fuel cell developed in partnership with Toyota. Why this matters: • One of the biggest barriers to hydrogen vehicles has been packaging the tanks without sacrificing interior space or requiring completely separate production lines • This modular “flat storage” approach makes hydrogen powertrains much more practical to manufacture at scale • It gives BMW flexibility to produce multiple powertrains on one platform depending on demand and regional infrastructure The deeper implication: While battery electric vehicles currently dominate, BMW is continuing to develop hydrogen as a parallel technology, particularly for larger vehicles and longer-range applications. Being able to build both BEVs and FCEVs on the same line is a pragmatic engineering step that could make hydrogen vehicles more commercially viable in the future if the refuelling infrastructure catches up. Below is a message from Björk: ~~~ “ the flood of all things from AI is overwhelming !! i am super grateful for your concerns about it´s effects on the environment , it shows you care , are curious and have integrity . i am curious too , i would like to be more informed about the difference of "frugal" AI and the ones that do hugeenvironmental damage and want to be able to choose . i asked around and found out that both the visuals and the audio in our pompidou project were done with "frugal" AI . but i have a lot to learn . when we used some of the AI softwares to merge the animals voices to mine , some of the sounds were great but to be honest , the best blends of their voices and a human were done "manually" , me editing the sounds , choosing piece by piece , looking for personality , musicality and soul . with new technology , i try to use it as a tool to grow , not a crutch . for example when i used melodyne , i used it not for lazy voice progressions but spent even more time when using it . every note in every chord became intentionally more complex . ( for example choir in "thunderbolt" ) and hopefully stretched the potential more out , further than i would have in "normal analog" physical improvisations ... i felt with this new tool i could reach new places in my musical DNA , become MORE personal . more myself . in my opinion , this is how we will work in the future . humans can read emotions on an incredibly high scale . nature made us that way . if there is no soul in tomorrow's music made by AI it is because no-one put it there and we have to speak out and guard this as listeners . ( tbh there is a lot of soulless muzak on spotify already ... they don’t need any AI help for that ...) anything that is mass manufactured without the attention of creativity , is that way . AI or not so it is not about the tool it is what you do with it . 🚨 CHINESE SCIENTISTS JUST INVENTED 3D PRINTING THAT CREATES OBJECTS IN 0.6 SECONDS USING ONLY LIGHT. Researchers at Tsinghua University have developed a new method called DISH (Digital Incoherent Synthesis of Holographic light fields) that can print complex millimeter-scale objects almost instantly. Instead of slowly building layer by layer, the system fires thousands of precisely patterned light images from multiple angles into a still vat of liquid resin. Where the light overlaps, the resin instantly hardens into a solid 3D object. The entire process takes just 0.6 seconds. Why this matters: • It’s currently the fastest volumetric 3D printing method ever demonstrated • Achieves extremely fine detail features thinner than a human hair • The resin stays completely still, so there’s no vibration or distortion • It can work with watery (low-viscosity) resins, making it suitable for biological applications • The team has already printed complex structures like blood vessel-like tubes and even a tiny bust of a historical figure The deeper implication: Traditional 3D printing has always been limited by speed and the need to move either the print head or the resin. This approach removes both constraints by using light itself as the sculptor. Because it can print directly into still liquid (and potentially onto living tissue), it opens new possibilities in bioprinting, medical devices, and rapid manufacturing. If the technology can be scaled beyond millimeter sizes, it could fundamentally change how we think about making physical objects turning “print” from a slow process into something closer to instantaneous fabrication. Yesterday at Brown University ICERM's workshop on “Agentic Scientific Computing and Scientific Machine Learning” I spoke about “Adaptive Swarms Across Scales”, making the case for scientific AI as systems that can create representations, stress them, fracture them, and enlarge the category in which future representations live. The category here is a composable and breakable working universe of science: data, hypotheses, simulations, measurements, tools, failures, figures, papers, provenance, and the transformations that connect them. Discovery happens when those transformations become executable, inspectable, composable, and capable of changing the world model they operate within. Atomistic modeling gives one category - states, forces, trajectories, observables, boundary conditions, conservation laws. Neural surrogates learn fast morphisms inside or between such categories. But discovery is higher-order: it changes which objects and morphisms are available in the first place: what variables exist, what operations are allowed, what evidence counts, what scale is active, what invariant is being preserved, and what kind of explanation the system is even capable of forming. This is scientific method as adaptive architecture: compression, stress, fracture, recomposition. Fracture matters here because it makes the logic physical: a non-commuting diagram realized in matter. The imposed load, material hierarchy, defect field, and assumed continuum description no longer map cleanly into the observed outcome. The crack is the obstruction and it identifies where the old morphism failed and where a new representation must be introduced. The physical crack and the categorical obstruction are the same event viewed in different substrates. ScienceClaw × Infinite is a machine for constructing and transforming a category of scientific artifacts. Each artifact is typed. Each operation has lineage. Each failed branch remains in the category as reusable structure. The “paper” is no longer the terminal object of science; it is one projection of a larger compositional trace, and it can be generated at any time for consumption by a human or an AI. With that the unit of scientific labor is changing. For most of the twentieth century the unit was the result (a measurement, a theorem, a synthesized molecule). It is now becoming the algorithm that produces results, and after that, the substrate of discovery itself. The static PDF is the wrong terminal object for this regime, and the role of the scientist with it. We now design algorithms that build algorithms, and eventually substrates in which such algorithms compose themselves. At that point, the scientist is no longer outside the discovery system. The scientist becomes one of the representations the system can transform. In that sense, the systems will eventually do science to us, and that is the structural consequence of the principle they are built on.

The era of monsters like AUKUS is over. When the AUKUS program – which I will discuss in the coming days – was designed, it was already obsolete. Its most likely future is cancellation as many US programs during the last years. Just as drones in Ukraine dominated the battlefield in Ukraine, and proved that anything big and slow becomes vulnerable and almost useless, the same fate now reaches submarines. Hundreds of underwater drones will hunt submarines for hours or days until they find them, and China leads these breakthrough technologies. Two stand out: - Magnetic Wake Detection: developed by Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), it tracks magnetic disturbances left by moving submarines, even stealth Seawolf-class ones. Chinese UUVs already integrate this with existing MAD systems, mapping persistent wakes in real time. In 2025 tests, it merged with acoustic networks and AI to form a vast detection grid. - CPT Atomic Magnetometer (quantum sensor): the most promising, it eliminates low-latitude blind spots with extreme precision. DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPONS (DEWs) While typical civilian access to DEW technology is hyper limited, AI gives more insight into the reality of Directed Energy Weapons as used in combat. However, this is not a very comprehensive snapshot of what DEW munitions really are. First, they are not lasers, but rather known as sasers (sound outside of human audible range) that delivers more than just excited photons as per lasers, but envelopes microwave radiation delivered through linear particle accelerators and amplified by square-wave (jackhammer) ultrasonic concussion exceeding 20,000 pulses per second, where each impact doubles in energy through secondary emissions for every pulse. There is nothing ‘normal’ about DEW remains. Kitchen stoves, pots and pans, washers, dryers, water heaters simply vanished. The cast-iron engines in cars just gone with their aluminum alloy wheels and windows melted on the street. Since DEW sasers work through the delivery of microwaves (that are radioactive) through encapsulation within tachyons (like protective bubbles), the resulting debris fields of target areas are also left contaminated, similar to the aftermath of nuclear detonation sites. All the military weapons delivered from the US and other countries to Ukraine in recent years were outdated and considered unusable in a genuine modern conflict and were therefore literally being disposed of to make room for other, newer forms of weaponry in armories here at home. Those investing in submarines today may be wasting money. A Virginia-class submarine, powered by an S9G reactor, has a submerged displacement of around 10,000 tons and costs approximately $4–5.8 billion. Its top speed is over 30 knots. Now imagine a much smaller reactor, with power and weight around 15% of the Virginia's, used solely to continuously recharge a solid-state battery bank. Solid-state batteries weigh about half as much as lithium-ion batteries while offering 2-3x more energy capacity. In practice, this means that with the same battery weight, such a sub could achieve roughly 3x the energy gain, In terms of speed, solid-state batteries deliver double or higher discharge rates (potentially 10–20C vs. 5–10C for lithium-ion), ideal for sustained sprints above 30 knots lasting many days and a cruising speed around 25 knots. All this with 15% less overall weight, much quieter operation on batteries alone, and the same endurance as a conventional nuclear sub. And the cost? A micro-reactor would be 15–25% the price of a conventional one, small, modular, low-temperature/low-pressure. This means that when a more modern reactor is needed, you simply swap the module. A micro-reactor paired with solid-state batteries could make a Virginia-class sub $1.2-1.6 billion cheaper, quieter, and leave far more space for weapons, additional batteries, or crew comfort. That's why this system would put all existing submarines at a disadvantage in terms of cost, space, and stealth. Those not adopting micro nuclear reactors can follow what the Germans, Japanese, and French are doing. The Japanese pioneered lithium-ion batteries with diesel chargers, giving their submarines excellent value for money. The Germans chose a fuel cell AIP system to recharge lithium-ion batteries, while the French opted for a similar Japanese-style approach with a battery configuration allowing up to 80 days endurance, making the new Scorpène highly competitive. Starting around 2030, production will shift to solid-state batteries, tripling the capacity of these conventional submarines and enabling silent navigation at around 25 knots for days,making them superior in stealth and speed to many nuclear submarines currently in service. Submarines powered by solid-state batteries, recharged via micro-reactors, fuel cells, or diesel, will be superior: better armed, cheaper, and stealthier than anything we know today.
