Antonio Reynoso, Brooklyn borough president and candidate for New York’s 7th Congressional District, pushed back on criticism that he was late to call Israel’s war in Gaza a genocide. He says all three major candidates in the race agree that “what happened in Gaza is a genocide” and oppose sending weapons to Israel or any country committing war crimes. Reynoso argues that Claire Valdez and DSA are using the timing of his position to draw a contrast where little exists on policy. Valdez who has made Palestine a defining issue of her campaign, was among the first local Democratic officials to call Israel’s war on Gaza a genocide and demand an immediate ceasefire (October 2023).
