The booing followed a May 5 open letter from the Executive Committee of the NYU Student Government Assembly, which called Haidt’s selection “deeply unsettling” and demanded that the administration reconsider its decision. Most revealingly, the committee complained that “many students have reported feelings of disappointment, disgust, unenthusiasm, defeat, and embarrassment,” language that mirrors the therapeutic vocabulary Haidt and Lukianoff diagnosed as the central pathology in Coddling. The students treated emotional discomfort with a speaker’s ideas as the equivalent of a physical threat. “Was he the safest option,” asked the students, without any apparent irony, “considering the current political climate and his critiques of liberal ideology?”.... Liberals being more depressed than conservatives doesn’t surprise me at all. When your entire political culture is built around seeing yourself as a victim, it takes a toll. Victimhood is treated like currency on the left. The more oppressed you claim to be, the more status you get. That kind of mindset wears people down over time. Add to that how often Democrats frame every issue as the end of the world. Everything is “a crisis,” everything is “under attack,” and everything is “existential.” Living in constant emotional overdrive is exhausting. And when your worldview is built on feelings instead of consistency or reality, it creates confusion, anxiety, and instability. Of course it leads to more depression. If you’re constantly told the world is unfair, hopeless, oppressive, and dangerous, eventually you’ll believe it. That’s the environment many on the left live in every single day.

“Your job as a parent is NOT to make your kids happy.” Becky Kennedy dropped this on Lewis Howes’ podcast and it really made me think. Constantly trying to shield kids from hard emotions — like being the only one in class who can’t read yet — actually makes them more fearful and anxious as adults. When we rush in with “but you’re so good at soccer!” we’re signaling that those feelings are dangerous and should be avoided. Over time, that wires the brain to run from discomfort instead of learning to handle it. Resilience > constant happiness. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of trying to fix or reframe tough moments instead of letting kids sit with the feeling. It’s completely counter-cultural, but it makes so much sense. In a world full of fragile, anxious young adults, teaching kids to tolerate hard emotions might be one of the most important things we can do. What’s one hard emotion you’re trying to let your kids (or younger people in your life) feel without immediately rescuing them?

My advice on travelling to NEPAL: “Don’t come to look at the mountains, come to have the mountains look at you.” For thousands of years people having been coming to the Himalayas……seeking, pilgrimming, questing. Hoping to “see” the great Mountains of Myth, and what you will find is that the mountains have been seeking to see you. Calling you to them, you have heard it in your soul, the great songs of dreams. Some people come as Kings, and the Himalayas will show them what being a beggar is. Some people come as beggars, and are shown the riches of a Life. This is Myth playing out in real time, no matter how modern the world of humans seems to get, the Himalayas are timeless and always watching. People have come to these mountains, and from them learned Yoga asanas, people have come and have died, people have come and found freedom……and people will always come. The great Saint who brought the Dharma to Tibet, Padmasambhava, was no exception, and was held in the valley of modern Kathmandu for a long period of time, before he was allowed to proceed on his historic journey. The Himalayas did this, preparing him for his future tasks. Nepal is a cacophony of sights and sounds, and it’s easy to get distracted. It’s even easier to be a “tourist” and miss Nepal completely. My advice: if the Himalayas called you to them, and you took action and got yourself here, then humble one self and listen with more than your eyes and ears. The Himalayas will sing to you, if you get quiet enough to hear them. Go on a long walk, without a reason to come back……as good old Henry David Thoreau said, “Saunter”. #travel #adventure #Nepal

This deep-seated misogyny and obsessive need to control and dominate women remind me of the concept of "fragile masculinity" that I read about a while ago. These people are afraid of women autonomy, and the mere presence of women in public spaces makes them feel their fragile manhood is being challenged. They often hide that fragility by using excuses, such as religion and the Taliban-created "Afghan culture."

The left made young men, especially young white men, into complete punching bags. They said their fathers and grandfathers were evil, they discriminated against them and said they deserved it, and more. The left told men every day that society didn’t need them and didn’t want them. So, they turned to somebody who was ready to fight for them. "If you're feeling social anxiety in a situation, part of the reason for that is because you're thinking about how you're feeling." He points to fascinating research on language patterns and mental health. When you analyze the words people use in speech and writing, a striking pattern emerges: the more someone refers to themselves, the more likely they are to be depressed or psychotic. "You can actually distinguish with 75% accuracy between people who are clinically depressed or clinically psychotic and people who aren't by the number of times they refer to themselves." The core insight is simple but powerful: "The more you think about yourself, the more miserable you are." But Peterson warns against the obvious trap in trying to fix this. You can't just tell yourself to stop thinking about yourself. That's still thinking about yourself, and you'll fall into the same pit. Instead, he offers a practical redirect: "If what you decide to do is to pay way more attention to the other person and try to make them comfortable, then that social anxiety will disappear." The solution is a redirection. Rather than fighting your own self-consciousness, you shift your entire attention outward. Make the people around you more comfortable.
