U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy at the first autonomous vehicle safety forum today: “A lot of our top innovators from Waymo, Zoox and Tesla are here, and we're going to have a day long conversation; If you have an autonomous vehicle, do you need a steering wheel? We have to rethink some of our requirements, especially for autonomous vehicles, which will allow them to bring down price, maintain the safety structure, but move forward and be competitive with the rest of the world."

Starting next year sensors and cameras to monitor you are mandated in every new car in the United States “In 2021, Congress added provisions to an infrastructure bill that requires automakers to install infrared cameras and sensors in every vehicle. These cameras and sensors will create a constant biometric assessment of driver alertness and sobriety, of course, for your safety. If the integrated artificial intelligence systems determine that you're drunk or tired, it could prevent the car from turning on or limit your vehicle speed. The regulation eliminates privacy inside of your personal vehicle. The sensors inside your vehicle will constantly track eye movement, pupil dilation, and drowsiness patterns. Starting next year, sensors and cameras will be found in every vehicle sold in the United States.” Here’s some more information Section 24220 of the IIJA liked to the RIDE Act , Halt Drunk Driving provisions directs the Secretary of Transportation to issue a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requiring passenger motor vehicles to be equipped with “advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology.” Keep in mind, this is NOT limited to drunk driving. It covers any type of impairment and is left intentionally vague, drowsiness is technically an “impairment” The statute defines this as a system that can: - Passively monitor driver performance to accurately identify impairment, and/or - Passively and accurately detect whether the driver’s blood alcohol concentration is at or above the legal limit, and then prevent or limit vehicle operation if impairment is detected The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued reports saying this technology is not ready so it may be delayed again but the deadline is fast approaching

The in-cabin radar in the new Model Y. A testament to why Tesla are the safest vehicles in the world. They are putting safety first. It detects passengers based on size, weight but also heart rate and breathing. Tesla saving children left behind in too hot a vehicle. It might usher in the end of the seatbelts altogether by improving airbag deployment based on size and weight of the occupants. The use case for Grok and robotaxi will also greatly benefit from the in-cabin radar. Thanks Tesla Owners Silicon Valley for releasing this video which contains a lot of good information. The company’s sensors can replace GPS with precise timing. $INFQ sells to NASA and the US Department of War. It looks like $INFQ could be selected for quantum sensors as explained in the Executive Order 14413 on Quantum Innovation last week.

I just rode in a Zoox robotaxi, which is owned by Amazon. It was a 7.6-mile, 25-minute loop along the Las Vegas Strip and back. Some background: Zoox uses cameras, lidars, radar, and long-wave infrared sensors. Their test vehicles build 3D maps of the city. The vehicle has four-wheel steering and has no front or back, so it can go in any direction. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. I’d like to see seat comfort improve as they were too firm and ergonomics weren't great, although I know this is just a test vehicle. There was an interesting interaction with a semi truck on the side of the road, but the rest of the ride went well. Both the adaptive suspension and quietness level in the robotaxi were good. Hard truths. We are all trending at the same direction. Even though those of us with premium performance Tesla’s only want to put the vehicle in FSD and let the vehicle chauffeur us. If someone is on the fence about a new vehicle and they don’t need something for offloading or hauling; The reality is that the model Y premium RWD should be everyone’s choice. I HIGHLY recommend watching (or rewatching) the Former Head of Tesla AI Andrej Karpathy brilliantly explain how Tesla’s Vision approach is the answer to Wide-Scale Global Autonomy on Lex Fridman’s Podcast. Quick Summary: • Extra sensors add cost to the system, and more importantly complexity. They make the software task harder, and increase the cost of all the data pipelines. They add risk and complexity to the supply chain and manufacturing. • Vision is necessary to the task (which almost all agree on) and it should also be sufficient as well. If it is sufficient, the cost of extra sensors and tools outweighs their benefit. • Sensors change as parts change or become available and unavailable. They must be maintained and software adapted to these changes. They must also be calibrated to make fusion work properly. • Having a fleet gathering more data is more important than having more sensors. • Using LiDAR can actually be a liability. • Having to process LIDAR and radar produces a lot of bloat in the code and data pipelines.
