Since Covid, golf has become increasingly more mainstream. Scottie Scheffler was asked ahead of the Travelers Championship how he feels about the impact it’s had on the game: “Yeah, I think it's great for golf to become more mainstream. I think you see, especially since COVID, there's been a...

Scottie Scheffler explains why playing too many events in a row can mentally drain players and referred to Tiger Woods always playing a limited schedule: “I think when you look at this sport it's unique in a sense of like the amount of time we spend in front of people throughout a week. Like for me to play four days of tournament golf, from the moment I step out on to the driving range if we're playing at a four hour pace that's over five hours, five and a half hours if you include this part of my day, where we're in front of people. And doing that four days in a row in a mental sport I think can take a toll on you. “I think that's why you see a guy like Tiger can only play so many events because I think mentally the challenge of just being in front of people for that long and being on and what it takes in toward to compete week in week out takes a lot out of you mentally. So for me playing more than three weeks in a row is extraordinarily difficult. I can't handle much more than that. “When you look at the season now I think it, for family time it's great to have an off-season as well, just for us for me to be able to be at home with my family is important. As far as the cadence goes, yeah, I definitely have a cadence that I prefer when it comes to scheduling and there are definitely risks cramming a bunch of tournaments into little windows just because it's hard to play that many tournaments in a row. It's hard to be on for that many times. It's hard to get yelled at that many times in a row throughout a round of golf. It just is. That's why for me three weeks in a row is kind of my max.” PGA TOUR TravelersChamp

Scottie Scheffler is a member of the PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council. He was asked today if there’s any issues he feels strongly about, and after originally saying he “doesn’t know”, he then spoke at depth about the importance of player pathways. Speaking ahead of his defence of the Memorial Tournament, Scottie said: “I don't know. Yeah, no, I don't know. Nothing too strong. “I think one thing that we talked about in terms of the new schedule was a healthy amount of turnover, and one thing that I'm actually pretty passionate about is avenues of getting onto the Tour. I felt like when I came out, that was something that wasn't an issue for me, but it was more difficult than I thought it would be. So when I turned pro -- when I was planning on turning pro after graduating college, PGA Tour U wasn't a thing. “I tried to sign up for PGA Tour Canada Q-School and there was only one qualifier that I could do due to my college schedule, finishing out the year, and that qualifier had already filled up because they give priority to the people that had already had status before, which I understand. But there wasn't an avenue for me to even qualify for PGA Tour Canada, so I spent the summer playing Monday qualifiers on the PGA Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour and playing mini Tour events so I could stay sharp and get ready for Q-School. “So when PGA Tour U started being discussed, that was something I was pretty passionate about, getting a new young group of guys out there and giving them avenues to get into our system and opportunities to get onto the PGA Tour. Because the guys coming out of college are getting better and better from a young age, and I think in a lot of other sports, it's very simple how you get into the professional ranks, is you get drafted, and in golf, there's not really that avenue, and I felt like that was something that we needed to have on the Tour is the right avenues for guys to be able to got out here. I feel like where we're at on PGA Tour U, giving those guys the opportunities is something that I think is important to me.” He went on to emphasise his feelings: “I think just giving guys opportunities is really what it is. Golf is a hard sport to predict, and I think that's why for a long time there wasn't that system, just because a guy could be a great college player, but it's really hard to figure out who is going to be the best player out here. “So I think giving guys a lot of opportunity across the board is important, and that's not giving out a ton of cards on the PGA Tour, but getting guys into our system where when you know if you play well at a PGA Tour sanctioned event, whether it's PGA Tour Canada or Latin America -- or I think it's called PGA Tour Americas now. But giving guys those starts and those opportunities to where they can prove themself and earn their spot on the Tour. “There was an avenue for me, which was Q-School and a year on the Korn Ferry Tour, but I think it's important to get guys immediately into the system when they get out of college, especially when they have had good college careers.” PGA TOUR the Memorial

Adam Scott talks about what impresses him the most about Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy: “Well, I played 18 holes at Augusta with Scottie before the Masters the other week, and even in the practice round I think his mental approach to not just the game, but a round of golf. It's like he picks the course apart. He's so good, so controlled with his shots that he can kind of pick the course apart. It's like how I imagine Nick Faldo played, but a modern version of that. And I mean that all in positive ways. I was watching him even practicing and chipping, where he chipped from, it's very strategic. It seemed like he had all his bases covered and can pick the course apart. I think when he plays well and from watching I think he didn't make a bogey the last two week ends he's played golf. It's just pretty good around those two courses to have 36 holes without a bogey. So it's his approach, it's so smart, really… “The best thing, I mean, there are so many great things about Rory. These guys are playing at such a high level. I think Rory tells us a lot more about himself and his golf and I think the fact that he's put himself out there, like to be vulnerable with his game over the last couple years, and he's spoke on that topic a little bit, I don't think he said it directly led to him winning the Masters last year, but putting himself out there and being prepared to fail a bit more, just generally putting himself out there is what impresses me about him. The way he's able to take his lumps, but he also gets some big highs as well, obviously, he's so talented, so the ceiling of his golf is really high. But I think that's gutsy to do that.” Adam Scott returns this week to Trump Doral 10 years after winning the WGC Cadillac Championship at the same venue. PGA TOUR Cadillac Championship

lando asked whether his relationship with oscar changed: “it's still the same. and i think we both are happy that that's how it is. it's because we both have a lot of respect for one another and we both understand the position that we're in. and we both treat the world of driving versus just personally what we're like away from the track, quite differently. that's how i've always been. i feel like i've always gone on well with my teammates since go-karting. i've always wanted to because it just makes my life more fun, more enjoyable and that's also why i'm here. it's because i love what i do, so the more i can do that, the better. but we still just very much understand that we're here, we work for mclaren, we want the best for the team. we work very hard and as drivers always do, you try and maximize your own performance more than anything. but then when we step out of the car, we can still have a joke. we still have laughs in our debriefs, and we still enjoy everything away from the track. so, no i think it's still better than ever in many ways. i think we're still very different people. he's very just calm down to earth, very relaxed, always looks just cool, and that's something i also admire quite a bit, is how just plain sailing he is with a lot of things. it's a good attribute to have. always hard to read what mood he's in, but i think probably for me, you see more visually kind of the moods i'm in. but otherwise, it's not like we go play golf together and do things like i have done with carlos, daniel i didn't play golf with. but we're still different people, but in terms of relationship, we get along well. we still work together well and i think it's still better than it's ever been”

LIV Golf have sold nearly 100,000 tickets for their first ever event in South Africa, putting it on track to comfortably be the best attended golf event ever held in the country. Charl Schwartzel spoke about the growth of LIV Golf since their inaugural event in 2022: “Yeah, I mean, that first event in June in 2022, there was a lot of turmoil in our sport, a lot of uncertainty. Obviously it was coming from guys that had come to LIV. Nobody was sure what to expect… “But from a LIV standpoint, it's been fantastic to be part of it, to see how it's grown, gotten better. Every year they improve. “We've had a taste of it every year in Adelaide, where you can see what it can be, because that's like the pinnacle of the LIV events. Now just to see what we've created here in South Africa, it makes you very proud to see. This is fantastic. “I don't think there's any -- there's never been a golfing event in South Africa that's ever been set up like this, and I don't think many sporting events here. This is really amazing, and it's sort of a great -- to have seen, and like I said, proud to be a part of it, that's what we thought and what we were told it could be when we signed up with LIV, and it's really come to life. It's amazing.” LIV Golf Adelaide is currently the premier event on the league attracting 77,000 fans in 2023 for the first playing and 115,000 this year. With LIV Golf South Africa immediately approaching 100,000 in the first season, there is a real rivalry between the two countries to be the biggest event on the LIV Golf League. Cam Smith and his Ripper teammates think LIV should travel more outside of the US to build a fanbase in different global regions, especially those that have a location based LIV team like South Africa and Chile. They are also keen to play more of an international schedule to showcase quality golf to fans who haven’t seen it in a while. Cam: “I think the Australian fans is pretty hard to recreate around the world, but you just pick a city or a country that's been kind of -- I guess hadn't seen good golf for a long time. It worked last year. It's going to work again this year here. I can see it definitely working internationally a lot better than the U.S. because there's just so many tournaments in the U.S. I'm definitely putting my hand up for more of an international schedule and getting fans out that haven't seen quality golf for a while and showing them what LIV is all about.” Leish: “Yeah, I think like Cam said, there's opportunities all around the world, markets that haven't been hit yet like Adelaide hadn't been. You've got Torque -- there's an opportunity for a tournament in Chile; the South African lads I'm sure would love to have one in South Africa; you've got all of Asia and India. There's just so many opportunities, and I think places like Cam said that haven't seen world-class golf for a long time, I think that's where there's huge opportunities. Obviously the Tour plays a lot in America, and they've got that fan base there. I think we can really create a huge worldwide fan base because there's a lot of big financial markets around the whole world.” Lucas: “I guess that team aspect, as well, it makes it very easy for a country, for example, Chile to follow the Torque team or all those sort of markets. Honestly, I think by all reports that I'm hearing about this event last year and obviously what I've seen so far, I think you're going to struggle to recreate it 13 times again around the world. It's just a special event. It obviously won best golf event of the year last year, so it's going to be hard to recreate that 13 more times. But I do feel like with that team element, with it being quite a country -- a country is sort of dominating each team, I feel like that is going to allow for maybe a market where our international events can get hyped up really, really well and really get behind a home team kind of feeling.” I love this approach and they have really hit the nail on the head here. LIV talk about being the global tour while still playing around half their events in the US. They should reduce that number, and concentrate on building platforms in different regions around the world to truly “grow the game” and be the elite world tour.
