If leadership means anything, it must mean ensuring that no citizen is left struggling for something as fundamental as healthcare. Through Sebaashray 2, several elderly citizens who had been living with blurred vision for years have now regained clarity and confidence. Through coordinated referrals, 46 residents from Maheshtala, Budge Budge and Satgachia underwent free surgeries at Drishti Eye Care Centre. An additional 20 citizens from Falta and Maheshtala received treatment at Renuka Eye Institute, and 10 from Metiabruz successfully completed their procedures at Vivekananda Mission Ashram Netra Niramay Niketan. As long as I have the opportunity to serve, initiatives like this will continue, with focus, compassion and accountability.

#Sebaashray may have reached its formal conclusion on 20th March, but our resolve to stand by the people remains steadfast. In Diamond Harbour, help will always be given to those who ask for it. Honouring this commitment, today, seven individuals diagnosed with cataract-related issues at the Maheshtala Sebaashray health camp underwent free cataract surgeries at Renuka Eye Institute, restoring not just their sight, but their faith in a system that prioritises people over profit. Every life we touch strengthens our resolve. Our journey continues, not in grand gestures, but in quiet service to the people.

We seldom realise the value of sight until it begins to fade. For those living with impaired vision, the gradual loss of sight often brings with it a loss of confidence, independence, and dignity. Sebaashray refuses to allow lives to be clouded by such uncertainty. As in its first edition, Sebaashray 2 is once again restoring vision through free cataract surgeries, delivered with the highest standards of medical precision and humane care. This is the ethos of Sebaashray: service without conditions and a commitment to stand beside those who need us most in their hour of vulnerability.

Sebaashray stands as a sanctuary of care for those who often remain unseen, the vulnerable, the elderly, and the marginalised. At its core lies a simple yet profound commitment to heal with dignity, to restore not just health but the quality of life itself. In a poignant expression of a governance model that places compassion at the centre of public service, 13 elderly residents of Maheshtala underwent successful cataract surgeries at the Renuka Eye Institute. For them, Sebaashray meant the return of sight, independence, and confidence in everyday life. By ensuring timely, accessible, and humane care, #Sebaashray2 continues to reaffirm that healthcare must reach those who need it most, without barriers, without hesitation, and without fear.

Mahatma Gandhi used to say that the moral worth of a society is revealed in the way it stands beside its most vulnerable. That principle found clear affirmation in Nandigram, where twenty-three residents referred through Sebaashray underwent free cataract surgeries at Kalyani Eye Care, seventeen identified at Camp 1 and six at Camp 2. For many, failing vision had meant restricted movement, reduced work, and a gradual withdrawal from daily life. This was not merely a medical procedure; it was the restoration of independence, confidence, and dignity. Healthcare cannot operate in fragments. It cannot stop at diagnosis or end with an announcement. It must guide a person from need to relief, from identification to full recovery. Sebaashray was conceived with that continuity at its core, so that no citizen remains suspended between illness and care. That responsibility endures, and we remain committed to upholding it with seriousness and resolve.

When vision is restored, the world opens itself once more in colour, movement, and possibility. Under #Sebaashray2, fourteen residents of Maheshtala have today regained their sight through meticulously performed cataract surgeries at Vivekananda Mission Ashram Netra Niramay Niketan. Each successful procedure signifies far more than clinical excellence; it restores independence, confidence, and the quiet dignity that clear vision lends to everyday life. Moments such as these reveal the transformative potential of compassionate, service-driven healthcare, where every intervention is thoughtful, precise, and guided by empathy rather than expediency. I extend my deepest gratitude to the devoted doctors and selfless volunteers whose skill, discipline, and compassion convert hope into lived reality. Their unwavering commitment gives enduring meaning to the promise of Sebaashray 2.

Sebaashray destabilises an injustice normalised over decades: the belief that quality healthcare is a luxury reserved for the well-off. On Day 23 of Sebaashray 2, this conviction continues to take concrete shape on the ground. What began as a commitment has evolved into a sustained public health effort, one that places people, not privilege, at the centre of care. Across Bishnupur, #Sebaashray 2 is delivering advanced diagnostics, medical consultations, essential medicines, and structured referral support, entirely free of cost and without barriers. The steady participation we witness each day is not incidental; it reflects a growing trust in a system that chooses presence over distance and responsibility over rhetoric. For me, this initiative represents a clear moral choice. When healthcare is made available at the doorstep, hesitation gives way to confidence, and delay gives way to early treatment. Sebaashray 2 is a continuation of that commitment: to stand with people before illness becomes crisis, and to ensure that compassion is not incidental, but institutional.

Sebaashray was never designed to be an electoral gimmick. It is anchored in a principle far removed from political arithmetic, in the sincere belief that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and that every resident of Diamond Harbour deserves medical support that is accessible, affordable, and equitable. Thirty days into Sebaashray-2, now in Satgachia on its second day, the initiative has once again demonstrated that public service earns trust through persistence. I feel privileged that people have entrusted us with something as invaluable as their health. Sebaashray has redefined the standards of last-mile healthcare delivery. It has proven that care must reach the doorstep to be meaningful. We will not let that standard slip. We will defend it, sustain it, and strengthen it.

For families standing at the edge of uncertainty, timely healthcare is not merely relief, it is survival. Today, 13 residents from Maheshtala were able to regain their sight through cataract surgeries at Renuka Eye Hospital, an endeavour made possible by #Sebaashray2. Sebaashray is not simply an initiative; it is a commitment. A commitment that illness will not be ignored, that suffering will not be left unattended, that quality healthcare is neither privilege nor favour, but a right owed to every citizen. And in every life that regains sight, in every family that is reassured of its place in the care of the state, we witness the profound truth that leadership is not measured by proclamations or power, but by the tangible compassion extended to those who rely upon it, by the promises kept when hope itself seems fragile, and by the unyielding conviction that service is the truest measure of governance and the highest calling of those entrusted with the public trust.

The people of Nandigram placed their trust in me, and it is my responsibility to honour that trust through action. Sebaashray was organised to ensure that their healthcare concerns were addressed with urgency and dignity. From a routine check-up at the Sebaashray camp to specialised care beyond it, Aarti Bera’s journey reflects what this initiative truly stands for. Identified at the Nandigram Block 2 camp as requiring advanced treatment, she was carefully referred and has now successfully undergone laser surgery for her eyes, completely free of cost. From the camps in Nandigram Block 1 and Block 2, several others who needed further eye care were supported every step of the way. Six residents from Block 1 and eight from Block 2 have since completed cataract surgeries at Kalyani Eye Care, without bearing any financial burden. When I see citizens regain their vision and return to their daily lives with confidence, it reminds me why we continue this work.

Sebaashray may have officially concluded, but its legacy endures like an eternal flame, illuminating the lives of lakhs of families across Diamond Harbour with renewed hope. Though the camps have drawn to a close, their echoes live on in every heartbeat restored and every ailment healed, propelling our sacred mission of equitable healthcare into a bolder future, where no life is left in the shadows of neglect. I am especially inspired by the journey of Rustam Sheikh, who attended one of our health camps and was swiftly diagnosed as needing retinal surgery. Thanks to the expertise at Renuka Eye Institute, the operation was successfully completed, allowing him to see the world with renewed clarity and confidence. Alongside him, 15 other patients underwent free cataract surgeries, reclaiming not just their sight, but their dignity and independence. With continued post-operative care, they will soon regain full vision, and with it, the assurance that compassionate public service can truly transform lives. Together, we will continue building a healthier, more humane future for every citizen.

My approach to Sebaashray has always been rooted in the belief that public service is not a matter of convenience, and responsibility cannot be set aside. On Day 37, that conviction guided the work on the ground, reflecting a shared understanding that service is a duty, and it must be carried out with sincerity and care. In Falta, and in every place Sebaashray reaches, the commitment remains the same. To serve everyone without any exclusion. This is what continues to guide us forward, day after day, place after place with consistency, focus, and accountability.

In Nandigram, Sebaashray has become a powerful affirmation of what compassionate governance looks like in action. Through our model camps across two blocks, 22 citizens who had been living in darkness due to cataracts were referred for surgery at Kalyani Eye Hospital in Nimtouri and have now regained their sight. Watching them return home with renewed confidence and independence is a reminder that public service, at its best, is measured in restored lives. Health must never be a privilege, and dignity must never be conditional. Sebaashray stands for both. This is what a healthy society looks like, where care reaches people before suffering becomes fate. With your trust and blessings, Sebaashray will continue to expand this mission of compassion, equity, and accessible healthcare for all.

Loss of vision is an erosion of independence, dignity, and confidence. It dims the joy of seeing loved ones’ faces clearly, complicates the simplest of tasks, and gradually pushes people to the margins. While cataract surgery may be routine for some, for countless elderly citizens living with limited means, even this basic medical intervention remains beyond reach. This is precisely where #Sebaashray steps in. On 21st and 22nd January, 27 elderly residents of Falta, Diamond Harbour, underwent free cataract surgeries at the Renuka Eye Institute, restoring not just their sight, but their confidence, autonomy, and dignity. This is the true measure of Sebaashray’s success, an initiative rooted in compassion, built on access, and driven by the belief that no one should walk alone in moments of vulnerability. It exists to uplift lives, restore hope, and stand steadfastly beside those who need support the most.
