Today I signed the letter to the Lord Chancellor opposing any early release for those convicted of manslaughter. Because if you've taken a life, there should be no early release. Not in prison. Not under a hospital order. Nowhere. It cannot stop at prison sentences. It must include offenders detained under hospital orders too. For decades, victims in the forensic mental health system have been ignored while life-changing decisions are made behind closed doors. 9 in 10 restricted patients are discharged within 10 years. These are mental health criminals like Calocane. The criminal justice system is failing victims. The forensic mental health system is failing victims. And politicians are failing victims. Criminals commit more crime when the consequences are minimal or ‘worth the risk.’ If the cops just mowed these people down, shit like this would stop.
