Steven Soderbergh said recently that his next film will feature a significant amount of AI. My initial, knee-jerk reaction is I hate this news. It feels beneath Soderbergh, a director I love. But…if anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt with AI, isn’t it at least Soderbergh?

Traffic is one of those films I recommend to anyone I know who has yet to give it a shot. Steven Soderbergh has never made a film better than this- including Ocean’s Eleven. It’s an engaging, visually stylish story that dives into the wide net cast by addiction. Strong recommend.

Matt Damon is likely the best interview in Hollywood. His recent conversation with Amy Poehler is 100% worth listening to in full. Damon shares a lot of knowledge on his time shooting The Informant! & the direction Steven Soderbergh gave him. The entire interview taught me something. Also a reminder that The Informant! is a fantastically underrated film.

Steven Soderbergh on the movies that influenced him in his childhood: "Interviewer: What are your origins and what was your childhood like? Soderbergh: My family moved around a lot. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 14, 1963 and after living in a number of different places we finally settled down in Louisiana when I was thirteen years old. My father was an education professor and he would change jobs whenever he was offered a better position elsewhere. He would let me see any films I wanted. As a result, when I was ten or eleven, I discovered films like 'Five Easy Pieces' (1970), 'The Conversation' (1974), 'Scarecrow' (1973) that had a tremendous impact on me. Can we call this AI directing? 😂 Seedance 2.0 with the Omni Reference feature honestly feels like a total game changer. Summer Trip is one of my film which I made used Omni Reference, not only start frame anymore and for the first time, it genuinely feels like I’m directing the AI instead of just prompting it. The reasoning in Seedance 2.0 is seriously impressive. It understands intent in a way that feels collaborative. Of course, in production it still needs proper touch-ups in post, grading, timing, polishing details, but the foundation it gives is strong. Like it or not, we’re already here. And to be honest, my workflow has to evolve too. I can’t approach this the same way I did before. It’s less about generating random shots and more about guiding, refining, and thinking like a director from the start. Personally, I see this as a shift, not replacing filmmaking, but reshaping the role of the filmmaker. Now the question isn’t “Can AI make it?” but “How well can you direct it?”

This completely flips the narrative that AI is killing jobs. At the end of the day, AI is a productivity tool. Yes, some jobs will become redundant and obsolete, that is how it is for every technological revolution. But those who adopt quickly will have a higher chance of making it.

This thread reminded me of Thiel's take on biology and the excuses of biologists for why we aren't solving hard problems (I have a biology background and work as a scientist and still agree with him). My take is that AI won't solve biology, but it will help us understand it at a deeper level. Saying that it is impossible is a lazy take. Saying that AI will solve all problems is a lazy take too. There is an in-between where AI will support and help scientists move things forward. I am really tired of the excuses of the gatekeeper boomer scientists and the hype of the AI bros.

A sneak peek of Princess Jane's home world. I know AI is nowhere near to creating perfect movies yet, but this feels like the beginning of something great. Experimenting with AI-generated scripts like this feels like an important first step on the journey towards more human-AI creativity in filmmaking. For those wondering if I use AI to write my scripts, yes and no, I craft the base ideas, then use Anthropic AI to refine and polish it. I have successfully trained Anthropic on my story; it automatically knows and predicts each plot in the story. I do not wish to destroy human creativity but enhance it through AI; I believe a human and AI partnership will transcend anything we have ever seen.
