Tabs are here. Open any folder in a new tab, switch and reorder them without leaving the keyboard, and pick up right where you left off. Strata restores your open tabs after a restart.

Strata speaks your language. 11 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Simplified Chinese, plus Chinese keyboard-layout support.

Video previews, overhauled. A now-playing view with format badges, playback controls, a scrubbable timeline and ambient light that spills around the frame. Press Enter to continue in your default player.

New file icons. Code, config and project files get their own language icons, powered by Catppuccin. Keep each language's brand colors or switch to theme colors and draw them all in your accent.

External providers. Opt-in programs can add live file decorations and context actions to Strata, like Dropbox sync status, share links and Rewind, without loading any code into the file manager itself.

Global search exclusions. Ctrl+K searches Home and every mounted drive. Now you can keep the noise out: exclude folder names like node_modules everywhere, or skip a specific directory, right from Settings.

New Folder with Selection. Select a few files, press Ctrl+Alt+N, and Strata moves them into a fresh folder that's ready to rename. Cleaning up Downloads just got a lot faster.

Per-folder sort. Strata remembers the sort order and icon size for every folder. Sort Downloads by date, keep your projects alphabetical, and each folder opens exactly how you left it.

Omarchy theme variants. Following your Omarchy theme? Choose Original, Darker or High contrast. Your palette's hues stay intact while contrast adapts live across windows, menus, icons and previews.

Amazing

Nice theme! 🔥

I love Strata, great job on v1!

Thank you sir!

Are you considering the "side-by-side" tabs, like the old "Norton Commander" days?

We have considered it and decided against for now since most of our user base uses a tiling window manager anyway so opening up another one side by side fulfills this need to an extent. We may revisit this decision im the future.

OK - it's still a bit more cumbersome to copy or move between windows than panes, but of course, fair enough! And so great that you are spending so much time on making this great for us! Appreciate it!

You can do it with tabs pretty easily without opening 2 windows.

I see - this looks easy and approachable. Thing is though, that in a "two-pane-setup", I can so easily navigate where I am, and where I want to go. I can at all times see the directory of each pane. I do think, that most of this is due to my "muscle memory" of the different "incarnations" of Norton Commander, so it feels really comfortable for me, when that layout is there.

@l0gicgate Try I was also missing the Norton / Total commander experience so I have build one for Omarchy. Not as polished as Strata but could be a nice supplement. You are welcome to give it a spin and I am grateful for any feedback.

@l0gicgate Excellent! Will do!

It's amazing, thank you! can we use a different font?

We have an open issue to enable users to customize the font. It will be available in an upcoming release. Stay tuned

@NixFred That is a LOT of code, wooof

A little report: folder letters are cut.

This can happen depending on your font size/scaling. You can either increase/decrease the font size or system scale. You can also choose a different render in the Appearance settings (Cairo, the non GPU accelerated one)

Mmmm, ok, solved, thanks.

Your original tweet made me want to revisit the issue. While the problem is located upstream in GTK, we can still pin the font rendering to be manual inside Strata and dodge upstream weirdness. I'll have this in a nightly shortly.

Thanks 🔥

I just installed Strata and 5 minutes later this is my honest review. Occasionally you find something that truly blows your mind. Strata did that in a few minutes. For a v1.0 this is amazingly good. Like seriously good! Hey @dhh is Strata the new default in @omarchy?

Should implement something like this

We really need to make Strata a plugin/add-ons system so these kind of features can be dropped in!

Yeah, good to keep a file manager lightweight, but being able to search the contents of your files within the file manager, would be great.

We do have it on the roadmap to be able to search file contents. But nothing as extensive as DigUp. It’s a bit problematic doing this at scale, at speed, without indexing everything. Maybe you can provide insight into that. Come chat with us on discord! The invite to our server is on the website.

300k lines of rust in 45 days is wild for 38 contributors

Is it vibe coded slop or can it properly replace dolphin file manager

It's agenticly developed art and it's better than dolphin by a mile.

Doesn't answer the question of being able to *properly* replace dolphin file manager

@l0gicgate It's free, go and try. You are asking like if the dev owes you something.

@l0gicgate So basically you're saying the app is so heavily vibe coded that they haven't a clue how to even approach a response ? Nice.

@marthaelax You asked two questions: 1. Is it vibe coded? No. 2. Can it properly replace dolphin file manager? Yes.

@dhh heard you were looking for a nautilus replacement?

What an upgrade over Nautilus

Great. Just replaced my Nemo 😁

I like this a lot. Was testing it yesterday But I have to criticize the settings views. It feels too bubbly and slop. doesn't visually match the density and squared feeling of the actual file browsing

Strata has been great thanks for the continued development

@thisisgm fight back!

I'm using it on xmoand and it works great.

THING RELEASED ITS IN RUST AND ONLY TOOK 45 DAYS this is all mentioned before any feature

Massive

Nice!

@dhh what do you think Sir

gg

This is an interesting bug. Will fix on next release.

i notice some amount of inspiration from filepilot, I am excited for strata, especially if it starts reaching that state, keep up the good work 🫡

I love it! Blown away. Will be using this as daily driver on Omarchy.

basically yazi but GUI

Looks awesome ✨

GTK4? hey opus, convert it to quickshell and make it work on macos apple silicon. Thanks :D

@dhh Ok this looks solid!

@dhh Make it work on Mac and sell it for 2 dollars

tysm, i always wanted a file manager like this

Baller. I gotta see how this looks in Omarchy Mobile.

finally i can replace dolphin

cool
