Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES (Capcom/1996). Great technical achievement that pushes the 16-bit console to its limits. The massive CPS2 arcade fighting game was crammed onto a 32-megabit cartridge by utilizing a special onboard enhancement chip called the SDD-1. 32-bit ports like Saturn or PS1 are the... show more

I read a Capcom interview years ago that one of the original reasons for the alpha series was to have another SNES street fighter game to sell. One of it's earliest names was Street Fighter Classic (SFC = Super Famicom.)

That's cool! Makes sense. It's kind of dismissed today by the retro bros ("OMG it uses enhancement chip, it cheats". LOL, as if it was the only game that did that back then... (Sega Virtua Racing? Super Mario RPG? Mega Man X2 and X3? The list goes on).

They did some kind of magic ! I still play this game and it still looks amazing!

I never understood why people felt this pushes the systems limits. How? There seems to be nothing special going on there that wasn't done before. More storage on the cart isn't pushing the "systems" limits. The characters aren't particularly large or anything (they're a little on the small side for the time), the backgrounds in stages often have no parallax, the animation looks within budget of the SNES.

I was surprised Street Fighter Alpha 2 was barely playable on a SNES cartridge. I'm shocked that this console didn't blow up trying to load up this game tbh.

Those people who hate it for the micro-stutters and weaker audio, as you point out, the game shouldn't even have FIT on the system. Some other games, like Batman Forever, had similar problems with load times.

Personally I think this game is way overrated. The freeze-ups during gameplay are really annoying and the music stinks. The gameplay is fine and the graphics are decent. I respect they crammed so much into the cartridge, too. But hard pass. It was nice for SNES only fans I guess.

2 to 3 seconds, but that's not the only console game I played that had these intervals, they're pretty common in many 16-bit games to be honest. And not restricted to SNES. Which is fine, I'm from the computer world where HD, CD-ROM, or especially floppy 💾 were usually longer.👍

You lucked out.😉 As I record and edit these clips daily, full disclosure: I edit out any loading time, no matter how small. Social media: a 1-2 secs pause makes most people scroll down. Sad, but true.

I remember I couldn't believe it when I first leaned about this port...it was really impressive. The same happened to me when Resident Evil 2 came out for the N64.😮

コレは、alpha2ですね 日本ではZERO2 ちょっとバンク切り替えで止まるけど、素晴らしい移植でした。

A commendable port, all things considered.

I picked it up for cheap not long after release as a proof of concept. These days, if I play it, my go to is the patched version on my SD2SNES rather than my cart. It's the superior experience. Interesting that it was released on the SNES rather than the N64 at the time.

Wow, I completely forgot about this port. This was a very late stage SNES game. I tried to rent it at both Blockbuster and Hollywood Video and each time I went it was sold out. It was an impressive port considering the cart and graphics limitations of the SNES.

They should have used the SA-1 chip.

一応商品や製品というよりも カプコンからしたら 実験的なものがあったらしいね

It makes me wish we got the original SFA game as it also came out for the CPS Changer, which is basically hardware similar to CPS1.

I actually played this last on my Wii though SNES9X the Japanese version, don't have my SNES at this time

😎Nice ! 👏👏👏👏

They couldn’t play their old Zangief or old Dhalsim without their Super Bars.

I remember back in the day I was at what we called "video game market" where people gathered to buy, sell and trade games. One was holding it and called it fake. He insisted it was legit and it took me years once internet was available in my country that it was a legit port.

Huge achievement but the music always sounded really off compared to the original.

A technical feat Impressive if But it would have been a much greater feat if Capcom I would have done the same for Jaguar. With its generous color palette And everything else would have been awesome. The port would have been the best, translated in no time, loading in seconds.

Back then we had a lot of fun with this game. And it was a very popular request in rental video. Very hard to rent.
