ELON MUSK: “We had the third consecutive failure of the Falcon 1 rocket for SpaceX. Tesla almost went bankrupt. We closed our financing round 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, 2008. It was the last hour of the last day that it was possible. We would have gone bankrupt two days after Christmas otherwise. What's your pain threshold? Well, it's real high. So, yeah, SpaceX is alive by the skin of its teeth. So is Tesla. If things had just gone a little bit the other way, both companies would be dead. And one of the most difficult choices I have ever faced in life was in 2008. I think I had maybe $30 million or $40 million left in 2008, and I had two choices. I could put it all into one company, and then the other company would definitely die. Or split it between the two companies. But if I split it between the two companies, then both might die. And when you put your blood, sweat, and tears into creating something, building something, it's like a child. So it's like, which one am I going to let one starve to death? I couldn't bring myself to do it, so I split the money between the two. Fortunately, thank goodness, they both came through. (2:00) ... Well, there's a ton of failures along the way, that's for sure. As I said, for SpaceX, the first three launches failed. We were just barely able to scrape together enough parts and money to do the fourth launch. If that fourth launch had failed, we would have been dead. So, multiple failures along the way. I tried very hard to get the right expertise in for SpaceX. I tried hard to find a great chief engineer for the rocket, but the good chief engineers wouldn't join, and the bad ones, well, there was no point in hiring them, so I ended up being chief engineer of the rocket. So if I could have found somebody better, then we would have maybe had less than three failures.”

The original choice for the role of 'Lisa' in John Hughes's "Weird Science" (1985) was then unknown Robin Wright. But John Hughes lost her when her agent got her a role in the TV Show, "Santa Barbara". About Wright, casting director Jackie Burch said, "“She was not voluptuous but still hot for young boys" Kelly Emberg, a model and cover girl was cast in the part. But the problem with her was that she couldn't act. Hughes asked Burch to find someone who was “gorgeous and can act.” She found Kelly LeBrock. According to Kelly LeBrock, she turned down the role when it was offered to her first because she was having way too much fun in the South of France with Sting and she didn't want to go to the USA. After about three weeks of shooting, the one hired instead of LeBrock was fired. LeBrock was called again and they said, "we will give you whatever you want". She got on the flight to Chicago the very next day. About her experience during the early days of filming, LeBrock said, "My first scene was the shower scene, and I was forced to wear the previous actress’s wardrobe. She was a completely different body type than I was so a lot of the outfits had to be modified for them to work. Also they were three weeks into production and already knew each other, and I am the new person on set. Plus it was only my second movie, so it was very stressful for me." jfk jr.’s last night alive (thursday, july 15, 1999). “that night, after john had gotten his cast removed, john and gary ginsberg went together to the yankees game. the pair were driven by car service to yankee stadium to attend an interleague night game between the yankees and the atlanta braves. ginsberg had also invited to the game james and lachlan murdoch, rupert's two sons. they all sat together in the box of george steinbrenner, the yankees' owner. part of the idea was to have john meet the murdoch sons to see if there might be some interest in news corporation replacing hachette as john's partner for george. george was not the only topic of conversation that evening. gary recalled, "it was not a good last night for john. i think his most immediate concern was "what do i do with george?" it was an unsettling period. there were a lot of unknowns in his personal and professional life. but what he was talking about that night was running for governor against pataki. there was a lot of uncertainty. he didn't want to get divorced. he was a sticker, not someone who looked to get out of things. he looked at his sister's marriage and saw how happy it was and wanted the same for himself. so i'm thinking, in a perfect world, it all works out". in the long car ride to and from the stadium, gary talked with john about his political ambitions. john mentioned that he was eyeing the new york governor's race in 2002. "that's the race", john told gary. he had stopped brooding over the senate seat that hillary clinton had moved to claim. "i'm intellectually and temperamentally better suited to be an executive than a legislator," he said. "my dad didn't like it, either", he revealed, referring to his father's time in the house and the senate. john felt he could beat incumbent george pataki, a bland moderate republican who was seeking a third term. john realized that he had to get his house in order before he could make the move. He worried whether carolyn would ever be emotionally capable of dealing with him running for office. and then there was george, which was hanging like a dark shadow over his future ambitions. "he was looking for a graceful way out of george", ginsberg recalled. the yankees lost to the atlanta braves that night, 6-2, and after the game john and gary shared a car home. gary recalled they spoke about john's dealings with jack kliger. john confessed that after kliger said he was cutting george loose, john had felt both depressed and liberated — depressed because he hadn't expected kliger's decision, liberated because now the worst had happened and he knew he would survive it. he had felt uncomfortable with kliger, john admitted. he had a problem with male authority figures. gary pointed out that that was understandable, given that john's father was a national hero. john also admitted that he'd been thinking about death a lot lately.. anthony radziwill's sickness was weighing on him. instead of going to his loft in lower manhattan, john instructed the driver to head south on fifth avenue. he would be staying at the stanhope hotel, at 81st and fifth. he told gary that he had lost his keys. john returned to the stanhope, arriving shortly after 1:00 a.m. "he was limping uneasily on his crutches and in obvious pain", said jeffrey jones, the hotel's night clerk.”
