Thursday, 6th August, 2026 Canadian, Embassy, Abuja PRESS RELEASE NIGERIA, CANADA SIGN EXPANDED AIR TRANSPORT AGREEMENT FOR DIRECT FLIGHTS, TRADES AND CONNECTIVITY In a landmark step towards strengthening bilateral aviation relations and expanding economic cooperation, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Canada have signed an expanded Air Transport Agreement that will, for the first time, permit direct scheduled air services between both countries. The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, FCIArb (UK), was represented at the signing ceremony by the Director of Air Transport Management, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Tijjani, who joined the Canadian Chief Air Negotiator for Global Affairs, Ms. Shendra Melia, at the High Commission of Canada in Abuja to formalize the historic agreement. The signing followed an extensive Nigeria–Canada Air Transport Expansion Technical Review Worksession, during which both delegations reviewed the existing Bilateral Air Services framework and reached a consensus that culminated in the signing of the Agreed Minutes. The Nigerian delegation comprised Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Tijjani, Director, Air Transport Management; Mrs. Jummai Yahaya, Esq., Director, Legal Services, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development; Mrs. Olayinka Babaoye-Iriobe, Director, Air Transport Regulation, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), alongside other senior government officials. Earlier today, I had the privilege of touring the Teknowledge office in Lagos alongside the Honorable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande (Ayodele Olawande ). Also present was Niyi Odejobi, as we explored the groundbreaking work Teknowledge is doing to drive technological innovation and youth empowerment in Nigeria. Teknowledge is dedicated to equipping young Nigerians with the skills and resources they need to thrive in the digital economy. Through specialized training in software development, artificial intelligence, digital entrepreneurship, and startup incubation, the organization is helping bridge the digital skills gap, fostering innovation, and creating opportunities for young people to excel. Their work is shaping a future where Nigerian youth are not just consumers of technology but active creators and leaders in the space. During the visit, the Minister was visibly impressed by the impact Teknowledge is making. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young people through digital education and job creation. He also spoke about the importance of strategic collaborations between the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and organizations like Teknowledge to expand access to tech-driven opportunities for Nigerian youth. It was inspiring to witness the alignment between Teknowledge’s vision and the Ministry’s goals.
