FSU External Affairs Officer Connie Shaw was on Talk to discuss the Government’s new draft Bill to ban conversion practices and the chilling effect it could have on free speech — particularly on conversations between parents and gender-confused children. You can easily imagine a situation in which a vulnerable child, having been radicalised into believing their parents are evil for not affirming their gender identity, reports them to the police. Even the threat of being reported could deter parents from having well-intentioned conversations with their children for fear of prosecution. How could anyone not want to ban giving electric shocks to gay kids? But the fact is, that's already against the law, as are all the other coercive practices conjured up by the phrase 'conversion therapy'. So what is it the Government wants to ban, exactly? The answer is 'converting' children who think they're trans to being 'cisgendered'. That's where the impetus for this ban has come from — well-funded pro-trans lobby groups like Stonewall and Mermaids. So any parent who 'misgenders' their confused adolescent daughter, or tries to talk them out of embarking on an irreversible medical pathway, could face criminal charges for trying to 'convert' them. And we're not talking about out a slap on the wrist. In the state of Victoria, Australia, which brought in a conversion therapy ban in 2021, the maximum penalty for trying to 'convert' someone is 10 years in prison. It won't just be parents and medical professionals who will risk imprisonment for trying to talk gender-confused children out of mutilating themselves. Any religious leader who shares the teachings of their faith on issues like homosexuality and gay marriage, could also face prosecution. That's what this authoritarian Government wants to ban — any dissent from radical progressive orthodoxy when it comes to sex and gender. The Free Speech Union has mixed feelings about Sir Keir Starmer’s departure as Prime Minister. On the one hand, he was no friend of free speech. On the other, he has been an outstanding recruiting sergeant for the FSU. Since he came to power in July 2024, the Free Speech Union’s membership has grown from 14,000 to 45,000. Unfortunately, we have little faith that Andy Burnham will be any better when it comes to free speech. Burnham has already called for greater restrictions on social media, and the Representation of the People Bill is likely to contain all kinds of threats to free speech. There is also no indication that he will abandon plans to ban “conversion therapy”, legislation that could see parents investigated or even prosecuted for conversations with their gender-confused children. It won’t be long before Sir Keir hands the authoritarian lanyard to Andy. The Free Speech Union will be watching closely. Watch Lord Young’s reaction to the Prime Minister’s resignation below 👇

This bill would remove parents' right to opt their children out of gender identity and sexual orientation curriculum. As a parent myself, I am outraged by this piece of legislation and believe that parents should have the final say in what their children are exposed to in school. Yesterday, I gave a fiery opposing speech against this bill, and I urge all of you who are watching to take action. Our friend in the Maryland Freedom Caucus has set up a page to send a letter of opposition to key Annapolis Democrats, urging them to support parental rights and vote against HB161. Please sign it. Let's stand up for our children and ensure that parents have the final decision on the curriculum their child learns.

Helen Joyce explains this best. I would just add, these parents have made a bet that their children will never realize it’s a mistake on their own accord. It’s inevitable that many of these children will detransition. When that happens, these parents are going to have to deal with incredibly resentful and fearful grown children, children who have to process what their parents did to them.

I’m afraid I have some terrible news. The governor of America’s largest and richest state has just signed a law that puts 10 million children and adolescents in grave danger of medical mistreatment. The media headlines have it wrong. They claim that California Governor Gavin Newsom’s new law protects children by stopping public schools from outing their new gender to their parents. It does just the opposite. It makes children vulnerable to irreversible and lifelong medical abuse and mistreatment. And it is all based on the pseudoscientific idea that some children are born into the wrong bodies and that we can change a person’s sex through drugs and surgery. For any of this to make sense, you have to understand what’s happening in Britain. Several years ago, the government appointed a well-respected pediatrician named Hillary Cass to investigate whether it was ethical to block the puberty of children, give them opposite-sex hormones, and perform surgeries on their bodies to make them feel better about their gender. Dr. Cass came back a few weeks ago and said no, absolutely not. Around the same time, the British government banned puberty blockers nationwide. And, just a few days ago, the new Labor Party government affirmed that it would maintain the former government’s ban. In her report, Cass said that the so-called “social transition,” whereby a child adopts the identity of the opposite sex, is not a neutral act and has psychological consequences. This means it is the first step toward medical intervention. What Gavin Newsom has done is actively prevented schools from informing parents that their children have been put on a medical pathway. This is an outrageous attack on the rights of children and parents. Children have a right to go through puberty. No adult should be able to block their puberty. And parents have a right to know if their child thinks that they are the opposite sex or were born into the wrong body. We have seen with leaked internal documents of the leading gender medicine group, WPATH, that these medical interventions, namely puberty blockers, hormones, and surgery, are not only irreversible but result in sterilization and loss of sexual function. Children or adolescents are simply not mature enough to understand the effects of so-called “gender-affirming care.” They cannot, in other words, give their informed consent. The new law creates the grave risk that activist teachers, students, and outside groups will convince their children that they were born into the wrong body, and hide their “social transition” from parents, which will lead to harmful medical mistreatment. As such, the law that Newsom just signed is the opposite of what both children and their parents need. We need schools to immediately warn parents if their children think they are the opposite sex. After all, this is a diagnosable psychiatric condition known as “gender dysphoria.” And if your child has a psychiatric disorder, whether anxiety, depression, an eating disorder, or gender dysphoria, you have a right to know. And schools must stop teaching children, or allowing other people to teach children, the pseudoscientific and dehumanizing ideas that it’s possible to be born into the wrong body and possible to change one’s sex. As such, either the legislature, the courts, or a ballot initiative will be required to nullify Newsom’s law. Until then, it is important to spread the word to parents that California public schools are fundamentally unsafe for the millions of children who attend them.

BREAKING: ARCHBISHOP EAMON MARTIN URGED TO SPEAK OUT ON HATE CRIME BILL (NEW GENDER DEFINITION) Archbishop Eamon Martin is the Primate of All Ireland and President of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference. Martina Burke and Josiah Burke visited Armagh on Saturday to raise the Hate Crime Bill with the Archbishop. The Bill passed the Seanad (Senate) last week and will go before Dáil Éireann for a final vote this Wednesday. The Bill would establish a radical new definition of gender, stating that "gender...includes transgender and a gender other than those of male and female". We asked Archbishop Martin if he would use his position of power and influence to speak out on this issue. Whilst the Archbishop stated that he had spoken in the past on this issue, he acknowledged that he had not spoken on the Hate Crime Bill in recent days. There was no clarity forthcoming from him on whether he would clearly address the issue of this Bill at this critical moment. Whilst he said that there were lay people who were addressing this issue, we would question why the Archbishop himself is not speaking out. In an effort to dismiss public concerns, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has repeatedly stated that the redefinition of gender is for the Hate Crime Bill only and will not affect any other legislation. McEntee repeated this during the Seanad sitting last Wednesday. These statements from Helen McEntee are absolute lies. The true intention of the Minister for Justice and the Department of Justice is to substitute the new definition of gender into every piece of legislation on the statute books that involves gender. This was made clear during the Seanad Debate on Wednesday last week when a private Fine Gael email from Helen McEntee to Deputy Richard Bruton was read out by Senator Ronan Mullen. That email was in relation to the new definition of gender in the Hate Crime Bill. The email stated that a review of the Equal Status Act and the Employment Equality Act is taking place and that when that review is finished, the definitions of protected characteristics in the Hate Crime Bill will be reconsidered to ensure consistency in definitions across the Statute Book. In public and to the Houses of the Oireachtas, the Minister is saying that the new definition of gender is for the Hate Crime Bill only. In private and to her Fine Gael colleagues, she is saying that all definitions of gender across the Statute Book will be rewritten. Such deliberate deceit from one in such a position of responsibility and authority is reprehensible. It calls for the Minister's resignation. It is unbelievable that in response to this deceit, Senator Ronan Mullen was at pains to say that come what may, "I have the greatest of respect and goodwill towards you and your family…and that will continue." We thank God for the recent closure of the Tavistock gender clinic, to which hundreds of vulnerable Irish children had been referred. So-called ‘professionals’ placed these children, many of whom suffered from mental problems, on a pathway to puberty blockers, mutilation and, sadly for many, suicide. This Hate Crime Bill with its new definition of gender would give legitimacy to this poisonous ideology which preys on the most vulnerable and allows for no dissent. This is the eleventh hour. An incredibly dangerous Bill is coming before the Dáil next Wednesday. We are calling on Archbishop Eamon Martin to speak out.
