FSU External Affairs Officer Connie Shaw was on Talk to discuss the Government’s new draft Bill to ban conversion practices and the chilling effect it could have on free speech — particularly on conversations between parents and gender-confused children. You can easily imagine a situation in which a vulnerable child, having been radicalised into believing their parents are evil for not affirming their gender identity, reports them to the police. Even the threat of being reported could deter parents from having well-intentioned conversations with their children for fear of prosecution. How could anyone not want to ban giving electric shocks to gay kids? But the fact is, that's already against the law, as are all the other coercive practices conjured up by the phrase 'conversion therapy'. So what is it the Government wants to ban, exactly? The answer is 'converting' children who think they're trans to being 'cisgendered'. That's where the impetus for this ban has come from — well-funded pro-trans lobby groups like Stonewall and Mermaids. So any parent who 'misgenders' their confused adolescent daughter, or tries to talk them out of embarking on an irreversible medical pathway, could face criminal charges for trying to 'convert' them. And we're not talking about out a slap on the wrist. In the state of Victoria, Australia, which brought in a conversion therapy ban in 2021, the maximum penalty for trying to 'convert' someone is 10 years in prison. It won't just be parents and medical professionals who will risk imprisonment for trying to talk gender-confused children out of mutilating themselves. Any religious leader who shares the teachings of their faith on issues like homosexuality and gay marriage, could also face prosecution. That's what this authoritarian Government wants to ban — any dissent from radical progressive orthodoxy when it comes to sex and gender. I’m afraid I have some terrible news. The governor of America’s largest and richest state has just signed a law that puts 10 million children and adolescents in grave danger of medical mistreatment. The media headlines have it wrong. They claim that California Governor Gavin Newsom’s new law protects children by stopping public schools from outing their new gender to their parents. It does just the opposite. It makes children vulnerable to irreversible and lifelong medical abuse and mistreatment. And it is all based on the pseudoscientific idea that some children are born into the wrong bodies and that we can change a person’s sex through drugs and surgery. For any of this to make sense, you have to understand what’s happening in Britain. Several years ago, the government appointed a well-respected pediatrician named Hillary Cass to investigate whether it was ethical to block the puberty of children, give them opposite-sex hormones, and perform surgeries on their bodies to make them feel better about their gender. Dr. Cass came back a few weeks ago and said no, absolutely not. Around the same time, the British government banned puberty blockers nationwide. And, just a few days ago, the new Labor Party government affirmed that it would maintain the former government’s ban. In her report, Cass said that the so-called “social transition,” whereby a child adopts the identity of the opposite sex, is not a neutral act and has psychological consequences. This means it is the first step toward medical intervention. What Gavin Newsom has done is actively prevented schools from informing parents that their children have been put on a medical pathway. This is an outrageous attack on the rights of children and parents. Children have a right to go through puberty. No adult should be able to block their puberty. And parents have a right to know if their child thinks that they are the opposite sex or were born into the wrong body. We have seen with leaked internal documents of the leading gender medicine group, WPATH, that these medical interventions, namely puberty blockers, hormones, and surgery, are not only irreversible but result in sterilization and loss of sexual function. Children or adolescents are simply not mature enough to understand the effects of so-called “gender-affirming care.” They cannot, in other words, give their informed consent. The new law creates the grave risk that activist teachers, students, and outside groups will convince their children that they were born into the wrong body, and hide their “social transition” from parents, which will lead to harmful medical mistreatment. As such, the law that Newsom just signed is the opposite of what both children and their parents need. We need schools to immediately warn parents if their children think they are the opposite sex. After all, this is a diagnosable psychiatric condition known as “gender dysphoria.” And if your child has a psychiatric disorder, whether anxiety, depression, an eating disorder, or gender dysphoria, you have a right to know. And schools must stop teaching children, or allowing other people to teach children, the pseudoscientific and dehumanizing ideas that it’s possible to be born into the wrong body and possible to change one’s sex. As such, either the legislature, the courts, or a ballot initiative will be required to nullify Newsom’s law. Until then, it is important to spread the word to parents that California public schools are fundamentally unsafe for the millions of children who attend them.

Doctors will block the puberty of children with “gender incongruence” as part of a medical experiment to determine the impact on their well-being, says the British government. “Right now, there isn’t enough information about the possible benefits or risks that young people with gender incongruence may experience when taking puberty-suppressing hormones,” says King’s College London, which is set to carry out the experiment next year on children ages 10 through 15. “The study will be overseen by independent advisory groups,” adds King’s College, “and will be subject to rigorous regulatory and ethics checks by UK regulators and the Health Research Authority.” If there are indeed ethical and evidence-based “UK regulators” who are in charge of “ethics checks,” they must stop this unethical and dangerous medical experiment on children before it begins. There is already sufficient evidence that puberty blockers cause significant harm to the brain and skeletal system upon which the entire body depends. Ninety percent of the children who receive puberty blockers will go on to use cross sex hormones, which can cause cancer, and many others will receive surgeries that sterilize and deprive them of sexual function. Puberty blockers don’t improve mental health. Data from a gender clinic in Britain that the government shut down because it was causing so much harm, Tavistock, found that more children see their mental health worsen than see it improve. Children are not old enough to give their informed consent for puberty blockers, and they are not medically necessary; the children can receive safe and evidence-based treatments for anxiety, such as family-based cognitive-behavioral therapy, and gender anxiety goes away for the vast majority of children once they go through puberty. Earlier this year, psychiatrist and former Tavistock gender clinic board member, David Bell, argued that the UK law demands that experiments minimize potential interference with a child’s “state of development.” And yet it is with a child’s “state of development” that puberty blockers are meant to interfere. The experiment will not allow the doctors or children to be “double-blind,” or ignorant of whether they are getting the chemical or a placebo. It is easy to imagine how doctors biased toward puberty blockers would treat the children receiving them in ways that might temporarily boost their mental health and distort self-reporting. And it is based on a pseudo-scientific ideology that posits the existence of a non-entity called “gender identity” in children’s brains. And, finally, the UK government already declared puberty blockers to be risky last year, which is why it prevented any doctor, not just those in the NHS, from prescribing them. The UK government says the lack of evidence for puberty blockers is why it must study them, and it was the author of last year’s report on trans medicine, pediatrician Hilary Cass, a Baroness in the House of Lords, who agreed to these experiments. Her review found the evidence for their benefits was weak and the potential for negative effects was unclear. She thus recommended clinical trials, noting that some clinicians, children, and families felt the drugs were beneficial. But the Cass Review also noted that “In 2011, the UK trialled the use of puberty blockers in the ‘early intervention study,” and “Preliminary results from the early intervention study in 2015-2016 did not demonstrate benefit.” By 2020, there was still a “lack of any positive measurable outcomes.” The fact that some families and clinicians said they benefited from puberty blockers is an extremely weak source of evidence for moving forward with these experiments. And there is some evidence that parents play a key role in the relative anxiety of their children. Doctors will block the puberty of children with “gender incongruence” as part of a medical experiment to determine the impact on their well-being, says the British government. “Right now, there isn’t enough information about the possible benefits or risks that young people with gender incongruence may experience when taking puberty-suppressing hormones,” says King’s College London, which is set to carry out the experiment next year on children ages 10 through 15. “The study will be overseen by independent advisory groups,” adds King’s College, “and will be subject to rigorous regulatory and ethics checks by UK regulators and the Health Research Authority.” If there are indeed ethical and evidence-based “UK regulators” who are in charge of “ethics checks,” they must stop this unethical and dangerous medical experiment on children before it begins. There is already sufficient evidence that puberty blockers cause significant harm to the brain and skeletal system upon which the entire body depends. Ninety percent of the children who receive puberty blockers will go on to use cross sex hormones, which can cause cancer, and many others will receive surgeries that sterilize and deprive them of sexual function. Puberty blockers don’t improve mental health. Data from a gender clinic in Britain that the government shut down because it was causing so much harm, Tavistock, found that more children see their mental health worsen than see it improve. Children are not old enough to give their informed consent for puberty blockers, and they are not medically necessary; the children can receive safe and evidence-based treatments for anxiety, such as family-based cognitive-behavioral therapy, and gender anxiety goes away for the vast majority of children once they go through puberty. Earlier this year, psychiatrist and former Tavistock gender clinic board member, David Bell, argued that the UK law demands that experiments minimize potential interference with a child’s “state of development.” And yet it is with a child’s “state of development” that puberty blockers are meant to interfere. The experiment will not allow the doctors or children to be “double-blind,” or ignorant of whether they are getting the chemical or a placebo. It is easy to imagine how doctors biased toward puberty blockers would treat the children receiving them in ways that might temporarily boost their mental health and distort self-reporting. And it is based on a pseudo-scientific ideology that posits the existence of a non-entity called “gender identity” in children’s brains. And, finally, the UK government already declared puberty blockers to be risky last year, which is why it prevented any doctor, not just those in the NHS, from prescribing them. The UK government says the lack of evidence for puberty blockers is why it must study them, and it was the author of last year’s report on trans medicine, pediatrician Hilary Cass, a Baroness in the House of Lords, who agreed to these experiments. Her review found the evidence for their benefits was weak and the potential for negative effects was unclear. She thus recommended clinical trials, noting that some clinicians, children, and families felt the drugs were beneficial. But the Cass Review also noted that “In 2011, the UK trialled the use of puberty blockers in the ‘early intervention study,” and “Preliminary results from the early intervention study in 2015-2016 did not demonstrate benefit.” By 2020, there was still a “lack of any positive measurable outcomes.” The fact that some families and clinicians said they benefited from puberty blockers is an extremely weak source of evidence for moving forward with these experiments. And there is some evidence that parents play a key role in the relative anxiety of their children. I’m 100% in support of adults pursuing whatever gender they please, by whatever means they like. More power to you! However, we will look back at this time, when doctors and “professionals” pressured parents to perform surgery and give hormones to *children*, with great shame and regret. The detransition stories are just starting, and they are devastating. These stories always include the parents and children being bullied into making irreversible decisions. They make decisions they don’t fully understand but are told will solve a complex problem. However, in most cases, this “problem” is solved best with love, compassion, counseling, and time. Adolescence is challenging 100% of the time, as we all have experienced. Imagine your darkest and most confusing moment as a teenager. Now, imagine a group of authorities telling you that your gender confusion causes all your pain and that you can solve all of that pain with surgery and hormones. Now imagine the state of California acting to hide this child’s struggle from their parents — and then pursuing a gender transition covertly with the child. That is the crime that is happening right now. We don’t let kids smoke vapes or drink until they are fully informed of the ramifications of those decisions as adults — yet we put them on puberty blockers and have them do surgery to change their gender as teenagers? What is the rush? There isn’t one, so they tell the parents, “Your child will kill themselves if they don’t transition.” This is pure evil. There are no parents who agree with this, there are only bullied and confused parents… and that needs to end now. I say this with unlimited compassion and love for any child or family dealing with gender dysphoria. Please speak up parents.

A shameful guillotining of consideration and debate of amendments to the ‘Hate Crimes’ legislation took place last Wednesday night in the Seanad. The Bill goes back to the Dáil now. So we had no Report Stage for the Minister to explain her thinking; no explanation for the new, dangerous definition of ‘gender’ other than that it is inclusive; even a claim by the Minister not to understand my position on the issue. Let’s spell it out one more time. The Bill comes up with a new definition of ‘gender’ that conflates the issues of ‘gender’, as always understood, and ‘gender identity’. The timelessly understood idea of the gender binary, i.e. male and female, is displaced by a new, fluid and unscientific gender spectrum notion. This conflation is totally unnecessary for the protection of any individual or class of person. The Bill could simply have listed both ‘gender’ and ‘gender identity or expression’ as separate protected characteristics, (as was done for example in the 2017 Victims of Crime Act). But the Minister would not do this. No adequate reason was ever offered for the new definition other than that it was 'futureproofing' (Simon Harris) and ‘inclusive’ (Helen McEntee). The new definition will have an immediate contagion effect across all criminal legislation aligned or altered by the ‘Hate Crimes’ Bill. The same politicians who foisted this on us will (if returned at the election) continue to seek to harness all laws built around the ordinary meaning of ‘gender’ (as in male or female) and apply these instead to an indefinite range of gender identities. The new definition will give new cover to those promoting gender ideology to young people—especially in new school curricula. It will give ideological support to the invasion by certain men of womens’ spaces and sports. It will provide cover for dangerous HSE approaches to gender dysphoria. It will be used to shore up the unpopular Athena Swan charters imposed by the HEA on third level academics. It will lead to a dismantling of the Equality Acts. Men can be women, and you simply have to suck it up. This Government sought to erase women and the concept of ‘mother’ from the Constitution earlier this year as part of the same fringe ideology. The People, by a large majority, stopped them. The Government refused to learn and doubled down on its woke policy. Your TDs could actually block this Bill in the coming days—if they were willing to defh the party whip. So please let them know what you think. I told the Minister on Wednesday that she will not deserve the votes of any parents of schoolgoing children if she maintains this corrupt definition of ‘gender’ in this legislation. Politicians who will not stand up for sex/gender really do not deserve to be returned. They are enablers of harmful practices. The voters will have an opportunity to choose new representatives soon for the next Dail. They should punish irresponsible TDs and choose more wisely next time. Look for good quality Independents and sympathetic small parties, and Members of the larger parties only if they vocally and clearly defy their political masters. We urgently need change.

The Free Speech Union has mixed feelings about Sir Keir Starmer’s departure as Prime Minister. On the one hand, he was no friend of free speech. On the other, he has been an outstanding recruiting sergeant for the FSU. Since he came to power in July 2024, the Free Speech Union’s membership has grown from 14,000 to 45,000. Unfortunately, we have little faith that Andy Burnham will be any better when it comes to free speech. Burnham has already called for greater restrictions on social media, and the Representation of the People Bill is likely to contain all kinds of threats to free speech. There is also no indication that he will abandon plans to ban “conversion therapy”, legislation that could see parents investigated or even prosecuted for conversations with their gender-confused children. It won’t be long before Sir Keir hands the authoritarian lanyard to Andy. The Free Speech Union will be watching closely. Watch Lord Young’s reaction to the Prime Minister’s resignation below 👇
