Criteria for declaring Cold Wave in the Plains Cold wave conditions set in when minimum temperatures drop to 10°C or below. A departure of -4.5°C to -6.4°C from normal signals a cold wave, while -6.4°C or lower marks a severe cold wave. Independently, if the minimum temperature falls to 4°C or less, a cold wave is declared — and 2°C or below means severe cold wave. When these conditions persist at two or more stations for two consecutive days, a cold wave is officially declared on the second day.
