Today, we funded two more DDG 51 Flight III class ships. From the Great White Fleet to the Golden Fleet, our Navy has maintained maritime dominance. Happy 85th birthday to retired Marine Corps Col. Harvey “Barney” Barnum Jr., a Medal of Honor recipient and the living namesake for the USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. (DDG 124), an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Col. Barnum last week rode aboard the ship with members of her future crew, in a rare moment of living history, for her first set of sea trials. He twice served in Vietnam and received his Medal for heroic actions taken against enemy forces at Ky Phu in Quang Tin Province in December 1965 after his company came under enemy fire and was separated from the rest of their battalion. “It’s a great honor and I was very humbled when I got the call that I was going to have a ship named after me and that it was a warfighter, a DDG Arleigh Burke Class, it made me very proud. I’m very honored to be here for this trial,” Barnum said.
