Today, our LAWMA Project WISE team joined Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), the Nigeria Police and OP MESA military personnel in a coordinated enforcement operation across the Ketu–Mile 12 corridor, including Ketu Bus Stop and Ile Ile. The operation focused on clearing illegal trading activities from walkways, road setbacks and other unauthorised spaces that had obstructed pedestrian movement and contributed to poor environmental conditions in the area. Beyond clearing the affected locations, the more important task is preventing a return to the same conditions. Our teams are therefore maintaining a presence in the corridor to discourage immediate reoccupation and ensure that the gains from the exercise are sustained. Lagos is a densely populated city where public space is under constant pressure. Keeping our roads, walkways and public spaces clean and accessible requires consistent enforcement, but it also requires cooperation from traders, residents and businesses. We will continue to work with our sister agencies to restore order in identified environmental hotspots and protect public spaces for their intended use. Yesterday, at different times of the day, I directed enforcement and clean-up operations across the state to address persistent street trading and environmental infractions. Our Environmental Task Force intervened at Ogudu Road by Ojota Junction, Iyana-Ipaja Under Bridge, and Egbeda Junction, where traders had encroached on the road, obstructing traffic and compromising public safety. In addition, one Mafus Azeez, aged 15, was apprehended along the Lekki–Epe Expressway for aggressively soliciting alms by displaying bank account details and operating a POS device on the road. This individual is known for repeatedly engaging in this activity despite previous warnings. During our ongoing monitoring and enforcement patrol today, 25 beggars were arrested in Agege as part of efforts to address street begging and restore order in public spaces. The patrol team has since moved to Ketu, and as of 1200hrs, a total of 86 beggars, 9 children and 12 miscreants have been apprehended across the areas covered. Those arrested will be profiled and handed over to the appropriate government agencies for further action in line with existing laws and social intervention protocols. A total of 115 street beggars were arrested today across various locations in the State during the ongoing enforcement operations. In addition, 26 members of the notorious ‘Omotaku’ group who were apprehended from different parts of Lagos within the last 24 hours, were arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Oshodi. They pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them and were sentenced to three (3) months’ imprisonment in accordance with the law. This action reinforces the State Government’s firm stance against activities that threaten public safety, order, and the effective use of public spaces.
