Tweaking the first prototype of the fox/pup suit hood. After testing, we found that it was a better design to move the collar and attach it to the hood. This allows it to cinch around the neck and keep the hood on the persons head better.

America's Concorde. The Lockheed L-2000 was America's Mach 3 supersonic jet project from the 60s, built to carry 250 passengers across the Atlantic at Mach 3 in 2 hours. The initial design called for a beefed-up turbofan derivative of the P&W J58 engines that had already been proven on the A-12 and subsequently on the SR-71—That would change in future evolutions. Unfortunately, It lost to Boeing's design, and sadly both got axed in '71 over costs and eco issues.👀

June 10 1964: a prototype XV-4, an experimental VTOL jet, crashes in Georgia (US), test pilot William J. Ingram dies. Control was lost after the aircraft transitioned from conventional to vertical flight. Reportedly, the pilot chose not to eject so he could fly the stricken jet away from a residential area. The airman lost in the accident was an Army civil test pilot, William J. Ingram, aged 43. (Even though the XV-4 was an experimental type – built by Lockheed - at the time of the accident, it was operated by the US Army) The XV-4 - officially named “Hummingbird” - was part of a US Army project in the feasibility of a VTOL jet in surveillance operations, using target-acquisition and sensory equipment. Truly an inspiring story of one man with a vision. Christian von Koenigsegg founded the company in 1994 with the goal of building the ultimate supercar. After a few years of development, the first fully working prototype simply called the Koenigsegg CC was completed in 1996. It was not a production car but it proved the concept the design and the performance potential, powered by a mid mounted 4.6 L V8 with around 650 hp a 6 speed manual transmission and double wishbone suspension. That prototype eventually evolved into the CC8S which became the first Koenigsegg customers could actually buy in 2002.

We had to change people’s perception of an electric vehicle because they used to think of it as something that was slow and ugly with low range, kind of like a golf cart. That’s why we created the Tesla Roadster — to show that it can be fast, attractive, and long range… Until you actually have the physical object and they can drive it, it doesn’t really sink in for people.” Elon believe this principle is something all startup founders should take note of: “If you’re going to create a company, the first thing you should try to do is create a working prototype. Everything looks great on PowerPoint… But if you have an actual demonstration — even if it’s in primitive form — that’s much more effective for convincing people.”

Rumors of why it was cancelled: During Congressional Hearings about the B-36 a congressman noted that both Curtiss-Wright and Northrop had been informed that "unless they agreed to merge with Consolidated [Vultee], business would be bad for them." The testimony before the hearing notes that Curtiss-Wright were unenthusiastic about a potential merger and this might have been why the F-87 contract was cancelled. The Secretary of the Air Force denied this, however, stating that the cancellation was the result of "operating difficulties with the experimental model of the F-87, plus increasingly satisfactory operating data on competitive all-weather fighters."

The aircraft achieved its first free flight in October 1962 and completed the first full transition from vertical takeoff to horizontal flight in March 1963 but was destroyed in an accident the following year.

It looks like a spaceship. But it is 60 years old. This is the XB-70 Valkyrie. Built in the 1960s, it was designed to fly at Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) and outrun a nuclear blast. It was so fast that the friction from the air heated the skin to over 600°F. To survive, the pilots wore pressurized space suits. But the craziest part was the wings. Once it hit supersonic speed, the wingtips would physically fold down 65 degrees. This allowed the plane to "ride" its own shockwave, like a surfer riding a wave. It used six massive jet engines aligned in a row. Only two were ever built. One crashed in a tragic accident, and the other sits in a museum. We haven't built anything like it since. Was this the peak of human engineering?

Google Street View started as a project to scan the real world. Cars with cameras photographed streets to collect data. It worked, but everything that made a place feel like a place was gone. Until Andy Szybalski prototyped what it could feel like as a product designed for people. The prototype was completely fake. The map didn't work and the imagery wasn't real. But it let people feel what it was like to stand on the street. An engineer saw it and said "let's ship it." Andy had to explain there was nothing to ship. This "smoke and mirrors" prototype convinced the team to throw out years of work and rebuild Street View through the eye of a human instead of a machine. I talked with Andy about the whole story, including the prototypes, the key design decisions, and how Street View became one of the most beloved products on the internet. This is from today's #WCWS game. This was ruled a base hit when it happened (you can see the 'H' pop up), but was changed to a missed catch error by the first baseman at the bottom of the fourth. This is an impossible catch for the first baseman with a ball thrown from that angle, that hard. This throw has to be to the glove, and while it's not a wild throw, it's low enough that the first baseman cannot get her glove around it in time. This is where replay gets you in trouble. The slo-mo replay makes it look like it's a catchable ball, but it isn't. In real time, at live speed, this isn't an error. This isn't a missed catch or a drop. I was loving the call of a single, especially because it was the first hit, and then, when it was changed, it felt like it was to protect a no-hitter. Everything about this screams "above ordinary effort" ... I would have left this as a single.

Underpowered for its size, it topped out around 197 mph and never entered production. By 1943 the sole prototype was converted to a cargo transport as the XC-105, hauling freight instead of bombs during WWII.

"At school or university, the thing is to be brilliant and to get the answer right first time. And there are brilliant people who can do that, but for the rest of us, we're not brilliant. And to get there, we have to strive and we have to go through failure. And we realize that you don't get it right first time, you don't get it right second time. In my case, and I counted it, it's 5,127 times. One of the things I always want to say is that sounds like a struggle. It was a struggle, but actually it was a hugely enjoyable struggle. The debt was mounting and I had three children, a wife and a home, and then a mortgage to pay, like everybody else. But I had a real point in life, I had a real aim and I had to get there. And the failures were interesting because I'd learned from every single one of them."
