Geoffrey Hinton just made every AI critic accidentally describe their own brain. Hinton: “They shouldn’t be called hallucinations. They should be called confabulations.” One word. The entire debate unravels. The tech industry sees AI produce a confident wrong answer and calls it a defect. A bug to patch. They are measuring intelligence against the standard of a filing cabinet. And exposing that they understand neither. Hinton: “It’s not that there’s a file stored somewhere in your brain, like in a filing cabinet or in a computer memory.” Your brain does not store memories. It rebuilds them from nothing every time you remember. Fills gaps it never discloses. Fabricates details you would stake your life on. Then hands it all to you as truth. Hinton: “If I ask you to remember something that happened a few years ago, you’ll construct something that seems very plausible to you. And some of the details will be right and some will be wrong.” The wrong parts feel identical to the right ones. No internal warning. No distinction between what was remembered and what was invented on the spot. You have argued over memories that were partially fiction. Told stories about your own life that your brain manufactured in real time. With total conviction. And never once suspected. This is not a defect in human cognition. This IS cognition. Chris Voss on the gut feeling you should never ignore: The former FBI hostage negotiator says your body knows when someone is lying even before your conscious mind does. In the clip below, Christopher Voss explains the science his team is actively teaching: "Learn the difference between your gut and your amygdala for lack of a better term, your fear centers and know which one is which." He's drawing a critical distinction most people miss. The amygdala triggers panic, anxiety, and self-doubt. The gut, however, is something else entirely: "Your gut is ridiculously accurate. Our gut is being fed by all these different inputs that we're aware of or that we have yet to be made aware of." What kind of inputs? Voss gives a concrete example: "The tone of voice doesn't match their words. The head tilt." Your brain is already processing these micro-signals and routing them through your gut before you can consciously articulate what's wrong. As Voss puts it: "You've got a supercomputer in your brain." Where is the triangle? Alex O'Connor thinks consciousness is the one thing materialism can't explain away and he has a deceptively simple argument for it. Close your eyes. Picture a triangle. You can see it. The shape, the angles, maybe even the colour. It's right there, vivid and undeniable. Now ask yourself: where is that triangle? According to Alex, this single question cuts to the heart of one of philosophy's oldest problems. A strict materialist, someone who believes everything in the universe reduces to physical matter has to say that triangle exists somewhere in the neurons of your brain. But if a neurosurgeon cracked open your skull right now, they wouldn't find a triangle anywhere inside. "If everything you experience is reducible to the material when I close my eyes and see a triangle, there really is a triangle there. I can see it. It's there. And I think well, where is that triangle? The materialist has to say it's reducible to just somewhere in your brain. But if I cut open your brain I'm not going to find a triangle inside of it." He anticipates the obvious pushback. When he raised this on YouTube, commenters pointed to computers as a counter-example: if you cut open a computer, you won't find the triangle it's displaying on screen either. But the hardware is still producing a real image on a real screen. Alex's response is that this analogy doesn't hold because the mind has no screen. There is no separate interface between the brain's processing and the experience of seeing. The brain is the computer and the screen. Which only deepens the mystery: somehow, purely physical processes are generating a first-person, subjective experience: colours, shapes and images that can't be located anywhere in physical space. "It's as if the computer itself somehow had a triangle in the computer's own first-person subjective experience. Like where is that triangle that you can picture in your head? Where the hell is it?" For Alex, consciousness isn't just another interesting puzzle in the philosophy of mind. It's the big objection to materialism. The thing that, once you sit with it, seems to demand that there is something more going on than matter arranged in clever ways. He points to something as ordinary as dreaming as a case in point. Every night you produce vivid images full scenes, faces, colours without any external input. An entire visual world conjured from nowhere. Where does it come from? Where does it go? "Even just when you have an average dream, it's fascinating to think what's going on there. You've got images in your head, you can close your eyes and you can picture things, you can see colours, you can see shapes in your head. Like where are those shapes?" The triangle thought experiment has a way of making this undeniable. It's not abstract. You can do it right now. And when you do, you run headfirst into the hard problem of consciousness: the gap between the physical description of the brain and the felt quality of experience that no amount of neuroscience has yet bridged. Whether you find Alex's argument convincing or not, the question it raises is genuine: how does purely physical matter give rise to the inner world we each inhabit a world of colours, shapes, memories, and dreams that exists nowhere except in the first person?

Elon Musk was asked how fast AI is moving. His answer wasn’t about the technology. It was about the one man who got it all right and was still too conservative. Musk: “I have to give credit to Ray Kurzweil in being actually remarkably accurate in his predictions. If anything, I think he was perhaps a bit conservative in his predictions.” Kurzweil spent 30 years making forecasts that made serious people uncomfortable. He predicted timelines that sounded impossible. He was mocked for it. He was right about nearly all of them. And Musk just called him conservative. Musk: “The dedicated AI compute appears to be growing by a factor of 10 every six months.” 10x every six months. Musk: “Almost a 100x improvement per year, at least for the next few years.” Moore’s Law was a 2x improvement every two years. That single curve drove every technological shift of the last 50 years. The internet. Smartphones. Cloud computing. All of it rode a 2x curve. AI is on a 100x curve. And the current infrastructure isn’t running beside the new one. It’s becoming it. Musk: “Probably a lot of the data centers, maybe most of the data centers that currently do conventional compute, will transition to AI compute.” Everything that runs the world you know is being rewired for the world that comes next. Human beings process the future in straight lines. We take the speed of the last decade and project it forward. Exponential growth doesn’t work that way. It’s invisible until it’s everywhere. The most aggressive forecaster in the history of technology was too conservative. That’s not about Kurzweil being wrong about the direction. That’s about the human brain being wrong about the speed. The limit was never the technology. It was the organ we use to comprehend it. And that organ hasn’t been upgraded in 200,000 years.

The AI industry is optimizing for a definition of intelligence that does not exist. Andrew Ng just said it out loud. Ng: “AGI, to me, should be less about AI that already knows everything under the sun. That seems very challenging, doesn’t seem practical.” The human brain is not the most powerful economic asset in history because of what it holds. It is powerful because of what it can pick up. Ng: “The amazing thing about the human brain is its plasticity, or its ability to learn.” That same biological hardware that earns a PhD in quantum physics could have been trained on chess, surgery, or rewriting global supply chains from scratch. Ng: “That same human brain, just given different training, could have been a chess master, or could have been amazing at playing tennis.” General intelligence is not omniscience. It is the structural capacity to master whatever you point it at. Ng: “It is through learning that we then gain these incredibly specialized intelligences.” The winner is not whoever builds the biggest model. It is whoever builds the most adaptable one. The AI that walks into a domain it has never touched and executes before a human analyst finishes reading the brief. Ng: “What makes the human brain so valuable for economic tasks, is its ability to just learn to do whatever is needed.” Every corporation on earth pays for human labor because humans adapt. Not because they already know everything. AGI is the digitization of that exact capability. At machine speed. At infinite scale. Ng: “A lot of what makes the human brain so general is not that my brain or your brain already knows everything under the sun. It’s our ability to adapt, to learn a huge range of things.” The most powerful economic asset in history was never specialized knowledge. It was the raw capacity to acquire any knowledge, in any domain, on demand. The winning AI is not an encyclopedia. It is the force that makes encyclopedias irrelevant. And once that exists, the question stops being what the AI knows. It becomes what you can teach it before your competitor wakes up. Listen to this sound. It's called the earth's heartbeat. Winfried Otto Schumann predicted this in 1952 with nothing but mathematics, and he was almost embarrassed to publish it. He calculated that the gap between the Earth's surface and the ionosphere, the electrically charged layer of the upper atmosphere, forms a closed cavity. A resonant chamber. And like any chamber, from a cathedral to the hollow body of a guitar, it has a natural frequency at which it wants to vibrate. His number was roughly 7.83 Hz. Then comes the part almost nobody mentions. What actually excites this cavity, what strikes the bell and keeps it ringing, is lightning. At any given moment around 2000 thunderstorms are firing across the planet, sending out close to 50 lightning strikes every second. Each strike releases a burst of electromagnetic energy that races around the globe inside that cavity. The bursts sized to fit the chamber reinforce each other, and the whole planet hums. The underlying phenomenon, order emerging for free out of countless tiny oscillators finding a shared beat, might be one of the most universal laws we have. That is the part worth being floored by. Not that the Earth is secretly tuning your mind. That the same mathematical principle, resonance and synchronization, writes itself into thunderstorms and heartbeats and neurons and clocks in the same handwriting. The mystics felt something real and then reached for the wrong mechanism. There is a rhythm that runs through the living and the nonliving alike. It just is not a radio station in the sky broadcasting into your skull. It is something stranger. A tendency, stitched into the structure of reality itself, for separate things to fall into step. The Earth found its beat from lightning. You find yours from ten billion neurons quietly agreeing on when to fire.
