The U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, whose members were entirely appointed by Trump, approved the design for the arch set to be constructed on a traffic circle between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. After a reporter told Trump about the commission's vote, the president called the result "fantastic." The 250-foot arch project is one of several the president has pursued to leave his mark on the nation's capital. A group of Vietnam War veterans is seeking to block the arch's construction with a lawsuit. The veterans argue that according to the Commemorative Works Act of 1986, building the arch requires authorization from Congress. But now Byrnes tells me he’s reconsidering due to President Trump’s push for a triumphal arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington. Vietnam veteran is reconsidering being buried in Arlington Cemetery because of Trump's arch: It's just simply inappropriate. If he wants to build a smaller arch that honors all veterans, particularly those who fell defending the United States, an arch that's appropriate in size and location, I'd have no problem with that. His father is buried at Arlington National Cemetery and Trump's 250-foot monument would sit right at its entrance, casting its shadow over the graves of all the American heroes buried there. We need to honor the fallen, and all military families, who have given everything to this country. We won’t stand for anything else.
