Chinese Swarm Drone Systems: 48 and 96 Drones Some time ago, I wrote about the evolution of autonomous systems and how only the Chinese were truly making progress in this field. After starting serial production of the Swarm-2, which features 48 drones and real-time tracking, they are now testing a version with 96 drones. These are divided into three categories: reconnaissance, jamming, and attack. Each drone can carry a variety of payloads, including electro-optical reconnaissance, strike munitions, and relay communications. They can be flexibly combined into different operational groupings, forming multifunctional swarms capable of complex missions. These drones have an individual range of 15 to 50 km, but the manufacturer claims that by maintaining a swarm network communication, this range is significantly extended. This strongly reinforces what we discussed a while back: that future wars will be dominated by drone systems that will severely delay any ground troop advancement, as already evidenced by the conflict in Ukraine.

JUST IN: Iran gave Russia its Shahed drones. Russia improved them in Ukraine. Now Western intelligence says Russia is shipping the upgraded versions back to Iran. And the country that learned how to kill those drones on the battlefield just sent 228 experts to the Gulf to teach five countries how to do the same thing. The full circle is extraordinary. Iran supplied thousands of Shahed-136 kamikaze drones to Russia starting in 2022 for use against Ukraine. Russia rebranded them Geran-2 and, over three years of combat, upgraded the navigation systems, added anti-jamming capabilities, improved the engines, and refined the payload delivery. The Financial Times and AP reported on March 26 citing Western intelligence that Russia is now in the final stages of shipping those upgraded Geran-2 drones back to Iran’s IRGC, along with medicine and food supplies. Kremlin spokesman Peskov called the reports “lies” and “fake news dumps.” Meanwhile, Zelensky arrived in Saudi Arabia on March 26 for an unannounced visit, met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, signed a defense cooperation deal focused on air defense and drone expertise, and departed Jeddah on March 28. Ukraine has deployed 201 to 228 military drone specialists to five Gulf and Middle Eastern countries: the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan. Another 34 are ready per Zelensky’s statement on March 17. These specialists are not there as a symbolic gesture. They bring the single most effective counter to Shahed drones that exists anywhere on earth. In these videos, I noticed the use of drones similar to the "Molniya," but their warhead contains an incendiary mixture. When it detonates, the enemy position is engulfed in flames. Since few on the front line have fire extinguishers, positions sometimes burn out along with the artillery pieces. And even if the gun itself doesn’t burn, this incendiary mixture “burns a path” for the following drones. Small semi-automated drones are also used as spotters when clearing buildings. The PLA is testing drones of all shapes and sizes for various tasks. Most other countries like the US are stuck on man-unmanned teaming with large and expensive platforms, like CCA or unmanned tanks, they cannot replicate this because their manufacturing industry cannot support it.

Because the drone was spotted, all air operations had to stop until the area was cleared — causing a completely preventable delay in life-saving care. Flying a drone near emergency helicopters is extremely dangerous and illegal. A collision could be catastrophic, damaging rotor blades and putting patients, flight crews, and people on the ground at risk.
