"Elon Musk is not an engineer." John Carmack: Elon is definitely an engineer. He is deeply involved with technical decisions at SpaceX and Tesla. He doesn’t write code or do CAD today, but he is perfectly capable of doing so. Robert Zubrin: When I met Elon it was apparent to me that although he had a scientific mind and he understood scientific principles, he did not know anything about rockets. Nothing. That was in 2001, by 2007 he knew everything about rockets – he really knew everything, in detail. You have to put some serious study in to know as much about rockets as he knows now. Elon is an engineer at heart, and that’s where and how he works best. Garrett Reisman: He’s obviously skilled at all different functions, but certainly what really drives him and where his passion really is, is his role as Chief Engineer. That’s the part of the job that really plays to his strengths. Tom Mueller: Elon and the Propulsion department are leading development of the SpaceX engines, particularly Raptor. Kevin Watson: Elon is brilliant. He’s involved in just about everything. He understands everything. If he asks you a question, you learn very quickly not to go give him a gut reaction. He wants answers that get down to the fundamental laws of physics. One thing he understands really well is the physics of the rockets. He understands that like nobody else. The stuff I have seen him do in his head is crazy. He can get in discussions about flying a satellite and whether we can make the right orbit and deliver Dragon at the same time and solve all these equations in real time. It’s amazing to watch the amount of knowledge he has accumulated over the years.

Elon Musk nearly went bankrupt building something nobody on Earth wanted to build. Then he gave it all away for free. Most people still don’t understand what actually happened. Before Tesla, not a single major automaker was serious about electric vehicles. EVs were a punchline. Glorified golf carts. The entire industry laughed them off. Elon looked at that vacuum and decided he would fill it himself. Not because it was profitable. Because if he didn’t, nobody would. That bet nearly killed Tesla. The company came within weeks of total collapse. Multiple times. Consider what they were up against. Combustion engines had 150 years of compounding innovation. 150 years of supply chains, manufacturing infrastructure, and institutional knowledge threaded into every single component. Tesla had a vision and 15 years. They built everything from nothing. The cars. The batteries. The software. The factories. Then came the part nobody talks about. Tesla had to build the entire charging infrastructure itself. A global Supercharger network. Thousands of stations spanning continents. Just so people could actually drive the cars they were selling. That is not a car company. That is a civilization-scale engineering project. Built by a company that was weeks from death. Then the numbers landed. The Tesla Model Y became the best-selling car in the world. Not the best-selling EV. The best-selling car on Earth. Three straight years. 2023. 2024. 2025. After 150 years of combustion dominance, an electric vehicle from a company that almost didn’t survive outsold every gas car on the planet. Then the story turned. Tesla open-sourced their patents. Opened the Supercharger network to competitors. The company nearly bled out building what nobody else would. Then they handed the blueprints to everyone. For free. Elon Musk: “It’s because it’s very important to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport. And this is really important for the future of the world.” He had the monopoly. He gave it away. He chose the mission over the moat. Without Elon, the auto industry would still be polishing combustion engines and pretending the future was decades away. He built what nobody would. Nearly lost everything in the process. Outsold the entire industry. Then handed the blueprints to his competitors for free. The mission was never about Tesla.

.Elon Musk says that "the right metric for intelligence is the ability to predict the future." Elon says that if your predictions are not very good, you're not that smart. During his interview with CNBC, Elon confirmed that there would be fully autonomous Teslas on the streets of Austin by the end of June. I predicted that Tesla would not have non-geofenced, unsupervised Full Self-Driving Teslas in Austin by July 1. Today is July 1, and Elon's predictions were completely wrong. By his own definition of intelligence, he is not that smart. I have always been better at predicting things about Tesla Full Self-Driving than Elon Musk is. That's why No Safe Words crowned me the "world's leading autonomous vehicle safety expert". As I predicted, Tesla's "Robotaxi" is geofenced to a small area in Austin. It is not autonomous, and is supervised both remotely and from the passenger seat. The only passengers it has carried so far are Tesla Cultists and shareholders. Tesla has not launched a real robotaxi service like the one Waymo operates. The 11 supervised robotaxis it has deployed made at least 17 safety critical and driving errors in just the first week of operation. Elon predicted in October 2024 that Tesla would have a 30% growth in sales in 2025. Tesla's sales fell 13% in Q1 2025 and tomorrow's delivery numbers are expected to be similarly terrible. I predict that Tesla's sales growth in 2025 will be less than 30%. Elon also predicted every year for the past 11 years that Tesla would solve autonomous driving by the end of the year. His predictions have been wrong every single year for over a decade. I predict that Tesla will not solve autonomous driving this year. Elon says "you're as intelligent as you can predict the future well". He is terrible at predicting the future, so according to "the right metric for intelligence", he is not that smart. Elon also predicted that Tesla would have a "thousand" robotaxis "within a few months" during his CNBC interview. I predict that by October 1, Tesla will not have 1,000 robotaxis offering unsupervised rides to ordinary customers.

Elon Musk just said something that disqualifies most of Silicon Valley. Musk: “If you’re gonna create a company, the first thing you should try to do is create a working prototype.” Not a pitch deck. Not a business model. Not a funding narrative wrapped in 40 slides designed to make something that doesn’t exist sound inevitable. A working prototype. That alone rules out most of the people who call themselves founders. Musk: “Everything looks great on PowerPoint. You can make anything work on PowerPoint.” That’s not a punchline. It’s an indictment. PowerPoint has no physics. No engineering constraints. No supply chain. No thermal limits. No gravity. Nothing that forces an idea to prove it deserves to exist in the physical world. It is the most effective tool ever built for making the impossible look funded. Spend long enough in that world, and the distance between something that works and something that looks like it works stops feeling important. That is the real damage. Musk: “If you have an actual demonstration article, even if it’s in primitive form, that’s much, much more effective for convincing people.” Even if it barely functions. Even if half of it is held together with tape. Even if it looks like it has no business working yet. Because a crude prototype carries something a polished deck never will. Proof. Not projected proof. Not modeled proof. Not “if we hit these assumptions” proof. The kind that sits on a table and either works or doesn’t. No narrative saves it. No charisma rescues it. No market-sizing slide covers for it. It just has to be real. That is the gap between Musk and the rest of the industry. Not intelligence. Not capital. Not ambition. He builds first. Then talks. Everyone else talks first. Then fundraises to find out if the thing could even be built. The distance between those two sequences is the entire history of why most things never get made. The professional world is engineered to produce one type of person. Someone who can describe, in extraordinary detail, what they would build if given the resources. Not someone who builds. MBA programs train you to present. Accelerators train you to present. Pitch competitions are literally scored on who presents best. The system does not reward builders. It rewards the performance of building. And the people deepest inside that system are the last ones who will ever notice. Musk landed a rocket on a drone ship in the ocean. Then caught a 23-story booster out of the sky with mechanical arms on the launch tower. He didn’t pitch that. He did it. Then the world watched and tried to process what it just saw. That is what separates someone who builds from someone who performs. PowerPoint is where ideas go to be believed. The prototype is where they go to be proven. Most careers begin and end in the first. Not because people can’t build. Because the performance felt so much like progress that nobody ever stopped to check.

I genuinely think the Terafab is going to end up being one of the biggest moves ever made in human history to secure the future of AI... and I think most people still don’t fully see what Elon is trying to do here. The signs are clear to me. This is Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX essentially hinting to us that they are not going to wait on the world to give them the compute the team needs. They are going to build it themselves at a scale no one has ever attempted. When you really break it down, it gets a bit nutty. This is going to be a fully vertically integrated chip factory that will be producing over 1 terawatt of AI compute per year. This is NEXT LEVEL BIG. Today, AI is limited by chips. You can have the best models, the best engineers, the best everything... but if you don’t have enough compute, you will eventually hit a wall. Elon told us, the world can only supply a tiny fraction of the chips his companies will need. So this is the solution. Terafab puts everything under one roof like design, manufacturing, memory, packaging, testing, which means that they can build chips very fast.. like really fast. I'm talking about 100-200 billion custom AI chips per year at full capacity. Chips designed specifically for: • Tesla cars and Optimus robots • xAI models • Space-based compute You see, while other companies and CEOs are thinking Earth, Elon is planning for AI in space. Around ~80% of the compute is expected to go orbital, powered by solar energy bc Earth simply doesn’t have enough electricity. The U.S. grid is only about ~0.5 terawatts, while space has basically UNLIMITED energy if you can capture it. And this is the steps to get it: Starship launches → space compute → solar-powered AI → feeds back into everything to Earth. Bro... Elon and his companies are playing at a whole different level... And this is why I keep telling people that the Terafab is going to be the secret ingredient that will be the real unlock for everything: • Robotaxis at scale • Billions of Optimus robots • Massive AI models running 24/7 • Future off-world, other planet infrastructure Without these chips, none of this can happen... but with the Terafab, all of this becomes possible. That’s why Elon is calling it “the final missing piece.” I agree.
