These recent immigration changes to indefinite leave to remain are creating a hostile and unfair environment, including for nurses and social care workers, who contribute to the fabric of our society. The Government must reconsider these cruel policies before they cause even more harm.

What a Prime Minister Andy Burnham is. Britain has spent years with politicians pandering to the far right, vilifying foreign workers who are here legally and who dedicate their lives to caring for elderly British people. We have had politicians such as Nigel Farage, Kemi Badenoch, and even some within the Labour Party who chose to echo anti-immigration rhetoric rather than defend the dignity and contribution of these essential workers. The cruelty of those policies reached a point where newly arriving care workers were no longer allowed to bring their spouses and children to Britain. Imagine asking someone to leave their family behind in order to care for yours. These are people performing one of the most demanding and compassionate jobs in society, looking after Britain’s elderly and vulnerable, yet they have often been treated as though they are disposable. It is therefore refreshing to hear a British Prime Minister who understands the importance of these workers and is prepared to acknowledge publicly the contribution they make to British society. Leadership is about recognising reality, not pandering to prejudice. I hope Prime Minister Burnham will go further and reconsider the decision taken by his predecessor to prevent newly arriving care workers from bringing their families with them. If Britain values the people who care for its elderly, it should also recognise their humanity by allowing them to live with their husbands, wives, and children; instead of breaking up families. A country that depends on their compassion should also show compassion in return.

Need to apologise and clarify: Yesterday I put a post criticising the Labour government for a five year fast track ILR program for those earning more than £125,00, saying that for nurses and teachers it would be 15 years That was a mistake. Shabana Mahmood specifically said nurses and teachers would qualify under 5 years It's actually many of the lower-paid health and social care workers who came to the UK legally under the Boriswave with a health and social care visa who could face a 15‑year baseline before they become eligible for ILR, rather than the current 5 years So anyone earning over £125k could be fast tracked under 5 years Healthcare assistants, nursing support workers, care assistants, senior care assistants, home carers, personal assistants, therapy/rehabilitation support workers, it could take them up to 15 years Labour's proposed two tier Indefinite Leave to Remain system which rewards high earners, and penalises low earners who work just as hard as the high earners but earn less And imagine, we have a broken social care system, and we're pushing away social care workers, because Labour have chosen to ape Reform UK's rhetoric, instead of recognising that the country needs social care workers, including the lower paid social care workers Thank you to those who pointed out my mistake about nurses and teachers yesterday, please always point out mistakes and errors, because there's far too much misinformation on line, and when we do make a mistake we should apologise and correct it Unless of course you're a Labour government in which case your Prime Minister, Home Secretary and Culture Secretary can all accuse the police of an antisemitic decision, banning Maccabi fans, despite police advice saying it was down to public safety. And despite Israeli authorities a few days later also banning a Maccabi game in Tel aviv - not because they are antisemitic, but because of public safety
