250 years ago today, a new nation was born. This is how, a century and a half later, four hundred men carved its story into the side of a mountain... The monument is Mount Rushmore, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and how it was made is even more astonishing than how it looks. The sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the work in 1927, choosing four presidents to represent the first 150 years of American history: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. The faces are each about 60 feet tall, roughly the height of a six-story building. I put together this video so you could see the men who actually built it. Look at them, dangling in leather harnesses over the edge of the cliff, hundreds of feet above the ground, drilling into solid granite. Around 90 percent of the mountain was carved away with dynamite, set by workers who learned to blast the rock to within inches of the finished surface. Then came the honeycombing: drilling dozens of small holes close together so the last layers of granite could be knocked away by hand and smoothed. In total, they removed some 450,000 tons of rock from the mountain. Many of these workers were miners who had come to the Black Hills chasing gold and found themselves carving a monument instead. The conditions were brutal, the heights were terrifying, and the work stopped again and again when the money ran out. It took fourteen years. And in all that time, blasting a mountainside with dynamite while hanging from ropes, not a single worker lost their life. Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN, holds a lot of secrets. I've been to Ruby Falls which is 600 feet underground and pretty spectacular. They don't tell you about the other chambers even deeper than that during the tour. I'm not surprised that the Masons are involved, either.

City of Harare admits air can trigger water meter charges The City of Harare and Helcraw Water say prepaid water meters work the same way as ordinary water meters. They say the meters are not faulty. According to the statement, when there is air trapped in water pipes after events like burst pipes, repairs, or when the water supply is restored, that air can pass through water meters and cause them to record water use even though mostly air is flowing. The city says this is a known challenge that affects both prepaid and conventional water meters, and that current technology cannot always tell the difference between water and large amounts of pressurised air. Residents are advised to close their taps immediately if only air is coming out and report the problem to the City of Harare or Helcraw Water so technicians can fix it. The city also says it is installing air release and pressure relief valves across the water network to reduce trapped air, improve the water system, and minimise incorrect meter readings caused by air. It says it remains committed to providing a reliable and transparent water supply.

The system stretches roughly 1.4 km in total, with two tunnel sections cut directly through rock, some passages 5 to 7 meters wide and just as tall.
