One of the things that makes the ending of Heat so powerful is its music—Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters." At the time, Moby was relatively unknown, yet Michael Mann somehow discovered the obscure track and decided it was perfect for the final scene. Moby explains: “Let’s get in our little time machine and go back to 1994. I was part of the rave scene, and I was making my first album, Everything Is Wrong. One of the songs—in fact, the last song on the album—that I was desperate to include was "God Moving Over the Face of the Waters." It could arguably be the strangest song ever included on what was supposed to be a dance album. There are no drums and nothing overtly electronic about it. When I was working on it and mixing it, I fell in love with it almost more than anything I’d ever done. So I put it on the album, and it sat there at the end, largely ignored. But somehow, and I still don’t know how, Michael Mann heard it and wanted to use it in this movie he was working on called Heat, with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, on and on and on. This real movie. I was baffled. How does Michael Mann know who I am? How does Michael Mann know about this piece of music? But I said yes, of course. It was such an amazing opportunity. This major Hollywood director knew who I was and wanted to use my music. They flew me to Los Angeles and put me in a professional studio to tailor “God Moving” to the closing scene of the film. Until then, I had only ever worked in my homemade studio in an abandoned loft building in New York… One of the most terrifying professional moments of my life came when someone told me, “Michael Mann wants to talk to you.” And I was like, “Can’t he just leave me alone? I’m terrified. I don’t want to talk to humans.” I thought, “Okay, Michael Mann is going to call me, and it’s going to be scary, but I can deal with it because I’m a big boy.” The phone rang, I picked it up, and Michael Mann talked for about 45 minutes. He talked about archetypes within the film, classical narrative elements and tropes. It was like he gave me this masterclass in what Heat was about, and then just hung up the phone. And then it came out, and to hear the music that I’d made against this phenomenal, beautiful scene—it really was special. I’m thrilled that, 30 years later, people are still discovering the film and “God Moving Over the Face of the Waters.” Spoiler warning: The clip below contains the ending of Heat. Justin Verlander, who is retiring at the end of the season, reflects on his time with the Mets: "I really fell in love with the city. It was short, obviously. Didn't go the way we wanted. There's a lot of things that were sad about it. But I think the relationship with Steve Cohen and his wife Alex, how great they were to me and my family. Getting to play that short time in New York was incredible. I still have my apartment in the city. There's not a lot of positives. I made some great relationships there. I think another thing that I appreciate was getting the chance to play with Max again, kind of rekindle that relationship after some years away. Just a lot of growth. I remember my daughter like bebopping around the city in her little scooter. Just a lot of, like, life memories there. It was a cool time for me in my life."

Please spare a thought for Michael Ward, who was born on this day (yesterday, sorry Michael!) in Carnmenellis, Cornwall in 1909. Michael was the very first actor I plucked up the courage to contact for an interview, way back in April 1989. He’d recently celebrated his 80’s birthday yet was wheelchair bound, had no family and had basically been forgotten about by the industry. As well as getting my interview we became firm friends and I kind of looked after him for the last eight years of his life. Every Sunday I’d arrive at his flat in Maida Vale and take him to my mum’s place where we’d have lunch and watch videos of some of the films he was in. Apart from the odd television repeat I don’t think he’d really seen himself on TV much and as the memories came flooding back he’d reel off story after story. One of my last memories of Michael happened shortly before he died in 1997. He’d decided to grow a beard and when I saw him I said something along the lines of, ‘My word, you look very distinguished’. ‘Surely you mean extinguished,’ he replied.

This is not the Portland, Oregon that I grew up in. I was a Trail Blazers Dancer in my early 20’s for several years and I used to LOVE being out in the city, especially at night! Those were some of the best years of my life. Now I worry about parking downtown in the middle of the day and getting my car broken into… not to mention all of the protests and riots taking place. It’s honestly just sad.

TV critic and broadcaster Scott Bryan talked about autism representation in ‘Heated Rivalry’ on the BBC Breakfast this morning 💗 “The show depicted neurodivergence, many people picking up one of the characters in the drama is autistic. I think it highlighted the traits that he was experiencing in a really grounded way, but also highlighted all of the other parts of his personality as well. His autism wasn’t the only thing we learnt about him. For myself, I found out I was autistic only a couple of years ago and this was the first depiction of autism on TV that I saw to be really quite relatable and realistic, and I know for a lot of other people they found it to be the same way.”

Anyone remember Armand’s Pizza. It was Chicago style deep dish pizza that started in DC 50 years ago. At one point there were a bunch of them all over the DMV, but for the last few years, the final one remained in Rockville, Maryland. Well, unfortunately, Armand’s it’s about to be gone for good, as the final location will be closing in a week. Now, if you watch this channel, you know, I prefer Tavern style pizza if I’m in Chicago, and I do not eat deep dish pizza unless I’m inside Chicago 😜 (Shoutout Peaquods). So I had never been here before, but I felt like a lot of people might have some memories of this so I wanted to show them one last pizza. PS: Giordano’s, which is from Chicago just opened up a location in DC so maybe I’ll have to check that one out too lol.

I thought often when people quoted Keynes about it not always being necessary to balance things one year with another, they always took the deficit years and forgot the years you in fact had a surplus so you had a balance over time. So deficits rose and rose. We got in. I was determined to tackle public expenditure. It was tough. Of course, we had a recession in 1981 and it went up but only very slightly because we were being very tough. In fact, I did the whole Falklands campaign without any increase in expenditure because we had the contingency reserve and that was adequate. At the end of my time, in the last four years, we had a budget surplus: We were able to redeem debt. Now, you don't get that without trying to be tough the whole time. There were some people who said, "Oh we've had a tough time. Consolidate. Don't you think you ought to be more generous to people?" I said, "With who's money?" And so, I left four years' surplus.

One of the earliest examples of this was Roger Corman. I started going to see these exciting, fast, kind of cheesy but really fun monster movies, and there was one name that kept coming up on the screen: Roger Corman. 'It Conquered the World' (1956), 'Not of This Earth' (1957), 'Attack of the Crab Monsters' (1957), 'The Undead' (1957)... But | really understood for the first time what a director did when I saw 'Rio Bravo' in 1959. There was something about that movie that was like home and I can't really explain it. It was held over in Bowling Green for three or four weeks in a row because people kept coming to see it. I abandoned to see what was new in the other movie house in town to see this movie every weekend again and again because there was something in it that was different from the other westerns I had seen. I had certainly seen John Wayne before. He had become a part of my growing-up experience. He was the action guy, the cowboy. He was the guy in 'Flying Tigers' (1942) who was flying the airplanes. So what was so different about that movie? Then I became aware of this credit: “Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo.” I looked at the poster and I said to myself, “Who is this guy? He didn't write the movie and he wasn't starring in it so why is his name up here? And why is he last in the credits?” All these things started to occur to me, but it was the emotional impact of the film that got me to start using my brain.
