This argument conveniently demands “full context” only when it is being used to defend him, while completely ignoring the context surrounding his repeated treatment of Nomy. If we are talking about context, then let’s talk about all of it. Tram didn’t simply wake up one day and become the... “victim” of Nomy’s reaction. He has repeatedly provoked her. He explicitly said he would frustrate her and turn the house against her. That is not an innocent misunderstanding. That is an expressed intention to antagonise someone and isolate them socially. And this is not just about one argument. There has also been a repeated pattern of age-shaming and body-shaming Nomy. The “he only said ‘somewhere is smelling’” defence is also deliberately narrow. Context is not just about the exact wording of one sentence. Context includes the pattern of interactions that led to the confrontation, what had been said before it, and what each person had been doing throughout the situation. Nomy lost her mother when she was just 11 years old. Her mum was a single mum and the only parent that she knew. Experiencing grief at such a young age is not something that is easy to navigate, in fact you never fully heal from it. This is why she keeps to herself because she has had to navigate this world on her own. She has had disagreements with housemates and she has never insulted anyone so passionately. Saying anything about her mum is a trigger and calling her a motherless hoe is definitely something that she wouldn’t take lightly. Using the fact that someone has lost a parent as an insult is extremely painful. No one would react positively to that. All she wishes for is to see her mum again and coming at her because of her mum’s death is a big trigger. Although the temptation to divorce him from his times, the challenges he had to face, and to look at him devoid of the historical context in which he functioned has become quite widespread. Yet, while we welcome ongoing analysis of his contributions, what is not acceptable is the systematic attempt being made to denigrate, distort, demean, and defame him. The sole objective of this is not only to diminish him as a personality and undermine his universally recognised role in India's independence struggle and his leadership in the early decades of an independent nation grappling with unprecedented problems, but also to demolish his multifaceted legacy in a crude and self-serving attempt to rewrite history. Analysis is one thing, but deliberate mischief with what he said, what he wrote, and what he did is quite another — and totally unacceptable. And who are the forces that have launched this project? We all know that they have worked for years and years—for decades—and finally, here they are. They belong to an ideology that had no role whatsoever in our freedom movement, that had no role whatsoever in the making of our Constitution. In fact, they even burnt it and were totally against it. It is an ideology that long ago fanned an atmosphere of hate that ultimately led to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi ji. His killers today continue to be glorified by its adherents. He continues to perpetuate negative stereotypes by accusing Waldman of "using" the systemic murder of six million Jews for money. He tries to re-route the conversation to the Israel/Palestine conflict. He yet again diminishes the cultural and generational trauma of genocide. He does not understand that Joel and his mother both contribute to, and are the faces of, the channel. I did not know who they were very deeply at all until a couple days ago, and I already understand that. Didn't have to dig that far. It is HER book as well that is being sold. I ordered it. And he never apologizes. This is what this guy does. He pokes and prods for the most painful pressure point he can find, and then exploits it. It goes beyond just insensitivity and bigotry and straight into unadulterated malice. If you're upset about what he has to say about a Holocaust survivor, you should hear what he has to say about the family and friends of murder victims, and their kids. There should be no space for this in the "true crime" community. There have to be some limits.

I did not know who they were very deeply at all until a couple days ago, and I already understand that. Didn't have to dig that far. It is HER book as well that is being sold. I ordered it. And he never apologizes. This is what this guy does. He pokes and prods for the most painful pressure point he can find, and then exploits it. It goes beyond just insensitivity and bigotry and straight into unadulterated malice. If you're upset about what he has to say about a Holocaust survivor, you should hear what he has to say about the family and friends of murder victims, and their kids. There should be no space for this in the "true crime" community. There have to be some limits.
