This is called The Spillover Effect. The original study had 2 main findings. Kellogg Insight did a study across 58,000 hours in 11 companies. They found "positive spillover" & "negative spillover." 1) Positive Spillover If you sit within 25ft of a HIGH performer, your performance increases by 15%. You...

Why are they being toxic tho? Do they need help? More training? A different job opportunity? Stuff going on at home? Should we figure that out or just fire them to keep the bottom line green

this is so true! Even in competition. I found when I competed against people above my skill level, I wanted to show up & represent if I came in as a heavy favorite, the lower competition also lowered my standards of my own performance- a powerful lesson Awesome post ✨📈🫡

So this is basically the law of attraction to some extent. Very interesting study.

I think most of us have observed the toxic effect first hand. This is so important for managers and leaders to get a handle on.

The people you surround yourself with have a gravitational pull. Make sure they pull you up instead of down.

Spillover is why most tech startups require in-person. IT's not because they hate remote. It's because your unicorns pump your normies.

I wish more people understood this. I worked with a lot of different teams before learning you peers are either a catalyst or a sedative. 1. An environment of high standards breaks sedative people's habits. 2. Talent density is measured by the level of catalyst within a team.

Being around toxic workers is like trying to stay dry in a flood. You might survive, but everything around you gets drenched.

Some millennials have been working for 20 years and are still confused by corporate 😂 For those who are still in the dark let me fill you in. Your performance doesn't matter. Your performance review doesn't matter. Your compensation has been set by a budget committee a year ago. You are not "overachieving" anything. Management has a fixed pool of money to pay the people they manage so they can give them raises less than inflation. If they give you more money, they have to give someone else less money. It's a zero-sum game. Managers actually have a larger pool of money to hire new employees because corporations recognize that new hires need to be incentivized to come over. They won't just leave their company for the same money. If you've been at the same company for 5 years you are underpaid. If you've been at the same company for 10 years you are paid less than a new hire at a competitor. Loyalty doesn't matter because there is no reason for a company to voluntarily pay you more money. Corporations already know that over 95% of employees will not go anywhere and will take whatever they get. Even if that's nothing. There's no reason to pay everybody more money when only a tiny percentage of workers will leave. Even if you leave... (remember over 95% of employees will not) ... the corporation will distribute the work you were doing among all your coworkers. And they will take on the extra work. And they will stay. For nothing. Because in addition to a salary, what an employee wants is to not have to look for a new job. That's all the want. They don't want to move anywhere. And companies know it, and they will take advantage of that. Now you know! You're welcome.

Unfortunately, "protective bubbles" are almost entirely a marketing myth. Where you place an air purifier in a room in relation to yourself has almost no effect on how much protection it grants you. Air is a fluid, and fluids mix constantly with the slightest movement. It's like trying to make a "cream only" bubble in your coffee while you're stirring. Only in a room, people are the spoon. This is easy to verify with even a cheap particle counter. Take a measurement with an air purifier across the room, take a measurement with it next to you- it will be almost identical. The measurement will remain almost identical until you are a few centimeters from the air purifier's output. People feel a breeze from a purifier blowing on their face, so they think they are protected, but with the exception of some very specialized units like the Air Fanta Wear, there is almost no localized effect- it's all CADR per room, not CADR per cm away from you. Here's a CFD model with an air purifier in various locations and the relation to particle count in the breathing box (inhalation zone) of a room occupant. In short, it doesn't matter if you have a lot of CADR close to the performer, just how many CADR in the room. Big air purifiers on stage are mostly for feels and vibes. The data just does not support it. It's too much air, mixing too quickly for a localized effect. A particle counter near the performer and in the audience will show almost the same number.

There exists a diseased & sick corporate structure in this country, even in the corporatised media industry. It hides behind the grandeur of fancy glass towers, corporate parties & business class travel. It is as feudal, if not more, as the society outside. Policies professing equality exist. But they can be tweaked to suit a caste system. A corporate caste system. And it is loaded against the young and the talented. It believes in the average. It nurtures a food chain of the insecure. 10 bosses will sit and identify a problem. The junior-most will be expected to come up with solutions. The ecosystem of below-average work ethic and talent ensures that no person can pursue their dreams. Eventually the talented perish. This toxic corporate ecosystem will speak a lot, but say little. We all know how the mediocres love to exhibit the cockroach instinct. Sick corporate structures are full of such dehumanised souls. In every adverse situation, a boardroom full of people will ideate on how to damage control, which will often involve fixing the external and never the internal. To all the youngsters with dreams, who suffer the indignity of below-average, insecure seniors, someone who will dump all the work on you and then throw you under the bus, someone who will make you feel small about your dreams, someone who will fill you up with self-doubt using negative reinforcement… to all those young dreamers - live on. And judge. Judge your average boss. Judge the average boss of your boss who put him there. Judge the whole system. In the hope of finding someone good, just like you.
