This is exactly what I expected from the U-Turn changes in Thoraipakkam by Greater Chennai Traffic Police. Commuters will start taking the opposite-side service roads, creating another choke point for vehicles coming from that direction. Even buses are using OMR service roads nowadays. What happens when multiple lanes suddenly converge into one? The IIT flyover towards Madhya Kailash is a clear example. Vehicles approaching from Anna University use four lanes, but only one lane is available in their direction on the flyover. This sudden compression creates a bottleneck, forcing vehicles to merge at the same point and causing the queue to build backwards. I studied the traffic flow at the TIDEL Park signal this morning and identified a major cause of the morning congestion towards Madhya Kailash. Within approximately 100 metres, traffic from six lanes is forced into just two narrow lanes because of Metro construction. A visible improvement at the TIDEL Park signal! After my earlier video highlighting how right-turning vehicles blocked the lanes meant for straight-moving traffic, the traffic police installed barricades to separate the two movements. I recorded the junction again today. The video clearly shows smoother traffic flow, with most vehicles now keeping the straight-moving lanes clear. The improvement among MTC buses was especially noticeable. The traffic police officer on duty thanked me and said this intervention had helped reduce congestion. He was also pleasantly surprised to see most MTC buses following the designated lane. A bus coming from the wrong direction crashed into an Army truck. Just imagine the danger. The reckless driving by some bus drivers has made life miserable for people driving smaller vehicles. Wrong-side driving, overspeeding, and zero regard for traffic rules are turning roads into death traps. If this is the condition when even an army vehicle is not spared, what safety is left for common citizens? Strict action and accountability are urgently needed before more innocent lives are put at risk.

They reverted the decision. I spoke to a couple of traffic police personnel on duty, and they said it was a trial. After it resulted in major traffic chaos, they reopened the existing U-turns. (a police literally said like this "traffic ah parthutu ellathaiyum kazhati yerinjitom") 🤷 I appreciate Greater Chennai Traffic Police for responding quickly and reverting the change. This Jain mandir has created huge trouble on the one-way road, all the cars are coming from the wrong side, and there is no traffic management. The Mumbai traffic police are also of no help my car was stuck for like 20 minutes in this rain just to move ahead. BEST Bus was behind me luckily I somehow squeezed inside and may be must be little 12” gap maximum to move ahead and in front of me there were almost 3-4 cars back to back coming from the wrong side. This is unacceptable If you have a festival hire a valet company! Every year it’s the same! I dunno what the Mumbai traffic police are doing? Mumbai Traffic Police plz look into this and talk to them! The 2nd video is just after clearing a bit! After confronting the driver he said, " Sorry, madam” But still kept moving ahead. Ward RC BMC

Mathura Road, right opposite Sundar Nagar and Bapa Nagar, barely a few metres from Bharat Mandapam, was meant to be a signal-free corridor. Instead, it has turned into a parking lot for commercial taxis. Public roads cannot become private parking spaces. To ensure smooth traffic flow and safety, the Joint CP personally conducted field inspections at major waterlogging points, including Lakdikapul, Ayodhya Junction, and PTI Masab Tank. During the inspection, Sri Joel Davis, IPS, reviewed the water drainage arrangements and traffic regulation measures on the ground. As rainwater accumulation has slowed down vehicle movement in several parts of the city, traffic personnel are actively deployed on the roads to manage traffic flow. A genuine question for urban mobility experts. KR Pura–Mahadevapura–Hoodi & further up to Kadugodi has reasonably wide roads, Metro, Suburban Rail and BMTC connectivity. Yet congestion on this stretch remains intense. We spoke to a few regular commuters and, along the way, some auto/cab drivers who use this stretch every day. Their observation was striking: “Traffic has doubled, not reduced. We know what is happening on the ground.” Is that perception or is there something more to it? If this corridor has multiple public transport options and decent road capacity, what is driving the congestion and more importantly, how can traffic actually be managed on this stretch? Would like to hear from urban mobility experts, traffic engineers and people who regularly use this corridor.

One of THE MOST impactful changes we can make to urban roads in India is to maintain consistent road widths from one intersection to the next. Our current, variable road widths disrupt the orderly flow of traffic. For example, if there's just a bit of extra space on the side, auto-rickshaws attempt to squeeze in, causing chaos. If a road suddenly narrows from three lanes to two and a half, congestion follows. In cities like London, when extra right-of-way is found, the footpaths are widened up to the road. But in Mumbai, we tend to expand the road instead. The issue with this approach is that the number of private vehicles in a densely populated city like Mumbai can grow without limits. Expanding roads only encourages more vehicles. On the other hand, widening footpaths doesn't cause the same problem because the space required for pedestrians is limited—walking is highly space-efficient. #WalkingProject

Our team of Advocates has been unable to gain access to Kasarani Police Station, where some Kenyans are being held, as the roads have been barricaded. We take note of reports of several persons who have been beaten up and injured by police. We demand that the National Police Service-Kenya exercise restraint from using excessive force against the people. We have also seen images of police indiscriminately lobbing teargas cannisters in largely residential areas and without provocation. This is Mylapore, off Radhakrishnan Salai near Vivekananda college. NO ONE has come to clear the water here. It’s been like this since yesterday, and by the minute more sewage water is coming out and getting mixed. Water has entered all the houses at ground floor level here. Please do something about this and other parts of Mylapore. Water has never stagnated here, not even during the 2015 floods. All through the year, they kept digging up the roads and multiple times the roads caved in and they kept restoring. Now the whole thing has reversed and water is completely stagnated. This is Mylapore, off Radhakrishnan Salai near Vivekananda college. NO ONE has come to clear the water here. It’s been like this since yesterday, and by the minute more sewage water is coming out and getting mixed. Water has entered all the houses at ground floor level here. Please do something about this and other parts of Mylapore. Water has never stagnated here, not even during the 2015 floods. All through the year, they kept digging up the roads and multiple times the roads caved in and they kept restoring. Now the whole thing has reversed and water is completely stagnated.
