Temporary Indian students in Calgary are staging a so-called “hunger strike” after being refused post-graduation work permits. They entered Canada on study permits for programs that were never eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), paid high international tuition, and expected it would lead to staying permanently. Now that those applications have been refused, they’re demanding to remain. When a work permit is refused, maintained status ends. They lose the legal right to work and have a limited period to either restore their status or leave Canada. A temporary permit is exactly that: temporary. Calling it a hunger strike while continuing to eat food doesn’t create a legal right to permanent residency or change Canada’s immigration laws.

Meanwhile, Canadian kids can’t find jobs, and instead of fixing that, Tim Hortons went to Ottawa asking for permission to replace them. In a May 27, 2024, lobbying letter to then immigration minister Marc Miller, Tim Hortons admits: “without international workers and international students... business would struggle immensely.” Then comes the ask: raise the Temporary Foreign Worker cap from 20% to 30%. That’s nearly one in three workers not being Canadian — but they didn’t stop there. The company also pushed for a dedicated food service immigration stream with a pathway to permanent residency, locking in a permanent replacement workforce. At the same time, they want international students working up to 30 hours a week — hours that used to belong to Canadian teenagers trying to get their first job. And here’s the most infuriating part: Tim Hortons openly admits these jobs matter. They say these jobs help “develop a wide range of skills and build promising careers” and serve as “a stepping stone to integrate into our country.” Exactly. That’s why those jobs used to go to Canadian kids. Instead, youth unemployment is climbing, with nearly one in five young Canadians struggling to find work. Entry-level jobs, the first rung on the ladder, are disappearing. Strip away the corporate language and it’s simple: lower wages, replace local workers, and lock in a dependent labour pool. A student visa is a temporary document to study in Canada. That was always understood. Our universities and colleges were built by Alberta taxpayers, first and foremost for Alberta students. Where there is room for international students, the terms are simple. Earn your education, then return home to build a life with it. Rules are what make a fair system fair and our country needs to return to an immigration process that respects the rules.

A student visa is a temporary document to study in Canada. That was always understood. Our universities and colleges were built by Alberta taxpayers, first and foremost for Alberta students. FEARS OF MASS DEPORTATIONS International students and foreign workers have erected tents in Brampton, Ontario, to protest recent changes to Canada's immigration policy. They say they will not abandon their protest until the government reverses its decision. "This is the situation they created. They miscalculated how many immigrants they want, how much housing they have, how many they can accommodate over here, and now they're blaming it all on us," said one protester. I asked him if he thinks there are too many international students in Canada. He pointed out that some employers charge workers $20,000 for LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) to help convert their study permit into a work permit. "These [practices] need to be controlled. The government has to control immigration, and that's not a problem. But whatever [many] you've taken right now, you have to accommodate those, right?" he explained. "You sold a dream of a better life: Come here, study, get a work permit, stay," he added. At the protest site, signs reading "no illegals on stolen land," "no more Komagata Maru," and "no mass deportations" are displayed next to their tents. Most of the protesters are from Punjab, so I asked if they've faced exploitation from employers within their own community, whether community politicians in positions of power in Canada are helping them, and what organizations are lending aid to them. This group of students from a village in Enugu organized themselves to participate in the National JAMB Readiness Assessment. None of them could afford a laptop but they were able to get phones and a supervisor for the assessment. Although none of them scored above 200/400 in the assessment but they confessed that it’s a great boost for them to study harder for the next round.

In many cases, one or two students must do all the work for the entire group or risk receiving a fail result. The universities’ addiction to revenue from foreign students is putting the education of Australians at risk, and Labor has a plan to make it worse. It should be a simple requirement - if you arrive here to study, you must have a fluent level of English.

Back in 2023, Pierre Poilievre sounded like a bleeding heart liberal, publicly backing protesting international students, saying he would "join the protesting international students… we need these students… they should not be deported, let them stay..." Criticizing him for his stance then is fair, but a more productive question now is: What happened to those students and other temporary foreign workers? Have they been deported to India, or are they still here out of status and therefore in Canada illegally, taking away jobs from Canadians? He and his party should push the current government to answer that question.

A visual of a new build housing estate auction that was sent to Michael McCarthy FFG are forcing Irish families to compete with the world for the right to a home in the midst of what was / is a housing crisis. This is just so wrong in so many levels. FFG could follow Spains lead and introduce a tax for non-nationals buying homes or create legislation barring them from home ownership unless they are long-term residents, or roll out mass deportations.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announced the construction of hostels for 10,000 students. She said, "Initially, 10,000 students will be provided fully equipped hostel facilities by our government, and work towards this is already underway. Every student who comes to Delhi carries a dream in their eyes, years of hard work behind them and the hopes of a family back home. Our endeavour is to give them a safe, supportive place to stay, so they can study with peace of mind and move closer to the future they came here to build."
