The US and China have separated far more than most people realize since 2019. Flights between the two countries are down ~70%. Western expats in China are down 50-75%, and American students studying there are down ~90%. For years China brought in Western talent to learn how to build businesses. Those skills are now largely domesticated. "There's this confidence building. We used to just copy the West. Now we're world leaders in many of these things. We don't need the West coming to teach us things, we're going to teach the West."

Over the years of war, many have broken down because their minds are dead set on the past: on how things were "before." Now, those who remain in Ukraine have learned the main lesson: the war won't ask if we are tired or not. We try not to think about what will happen a year from now, because it drives you mad. The life of ordinary people in Ukraine is mostly survival, not heroism. True heroism is at the front, where bullets whistle, shells explode, and drones buzz, hunting for living people. We cannot control the rockets and drones. We cannot control the politicians. But we are capable of controlling ourselves. That is how we hold on ✊🇺🇦.

We need to learn from the Ukrainians, who are using 10,000 cheap drones per day. And the exchange that they’re getting for those is absolutely massive. Our exchange when we shoot an expensive missile interceptor to take down a $50,000 Iranian drone is obviously not one that is sustainable.

Jamaica is using GIS to change how we identify and solve challenges. I am in San Diego to accept the Esri President’s Award in recognition of Jamaica’s use of this critical platform for problem-solving, most recently in our response to Hurricane Melissa. We are also seeing how cities around the world are using GIS to solve thousands of real-world challenges and the tremendous possibilities this technology offers. Jamaica will not be left behind. We are harnessing the power of technology to drive growth and development.
