Either that is some special kind of caulk or that's not going to hold up for long. The silicone has a tendency to shrink over time, causing the edges to pull loose from the surface, so water would start going through. Should have used tar paper instead.

It will only last as long as the cucking. You have to put a flashing over the cucking to keep the sun from destroying it.

Wrong! Cut the first piece at the chimney and turn the end up across the entire width, channeling the water completely away from, not down the sides of the chimney. Then you can lap and turn the remaining piece under the uphill piece and either seal it against the chimney or use more material to enclose the chimney and shingle it into the roof flashing making the sealant redundant. Never use caulk when metal is a possibility.
