Who are the Kings Guard and why do they wear Bearskin Fur hats? The King’s Guard isn’t a single regiment, it’s made up of soldiers from the British Household Division, which includes: •Grenadier Guards •Coldstream Guards •Scots Guards •Irish Guards •Welsh Guards •The Household Cavalry These are fully trained, operational soldiers of the British Army, not actors or ceremonial-only troops. They train for 6 hours per day and also deploy to combat zones. Why do they wear Bearskin furs? During the Napoleonic Wars, Napoleon’s elite Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard wore tall bearskin caps to make themselves look taller and more fearsome. These troops were considered the best of the French army, and at the time Europes most Elite soldiers. When the British defeated Napoleon’s forces at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards (now the Grenadier Guards) defeated Napoleon’s Imperial Guard. After that victory, the British Guards adopted the bearskin cap as a mark of honour, symbolising that they had defeated the French Guard and in effect, “taken” the style from them. So while they didn’t literally strip the hats off fallen French soldiers on the battlefield, they adopted the bearskin to commemorate their triumph over Napoleon’s elite troops. The British Kings Guard are recognise as the best ceremonial troops in the world and British people are extremely proud of them. This Is Trooping The Colour filmed in 2016.
