This play right here that happened during this girls softball game doesn’t happen very often. The center fielder throws the ball home to try and get the runner coming around third. The pitcher catches the ball near home, up the line a little bit and the runner bulldozes her... over. But the little pitcher holds onto the ball. Runner is out! While the pitcher is down in pain, the following runner who reached third on the play decides she is going to try and score while the pitcher is hurt. But, the pitcher gets up and tags her out too! Two outs at home by the pitcher! I love tough kids! 💯 Do you think that first runner should have been ejected for running the pitcher over? Or do you think it was a clean, hard, play? Scenario 1 of 3 that I go over in my latest YouTube video “how to defend the walk to 2nd base with a runner on 3rd” For this specific scenario here’s a couple key points: •Get the ball back to the pitcher quickly. This forces the runner on third to commit and either break for home or retreat to the bag. •As pitcher is getting the ball back in the circle, peek to make sure the runner from 3rd went back to bag. •Allow the runner rounding 1st to get close to the 2nd baseman. The closer she is, the quicker the tag can be applied, allowing for an immediate throw home if the runner from third attempts to score. My biggest takeaway is at the end of this video. Let the girls try and make some plays. Get them to be competitive. The more they do it, the more comfortable they will get at it. Don’t just give up a free base- make the other team work for it.

This play happened a couple of years ago in a regional final matchup. Unique to say the least. A single up the middle to center field. One run scores. The center fielder charges and throws home. The second runner is coming in to score. The runner slides, the catcher swipes at his arm, was he safe or out? The issue here is the runner who scored before stays behind home plate and is waving for the next runner to get down. The home plate umpire bumps into him, trips, and falls down and doesn’t see the play. 🤯 You can defer to the field umpire but if he didn’t see it, what call can you make? 🤷‍♂️ Some said the runner should be out because the player who scored first interfered with the home plate umpire. I have never seen a play like this. What do you think? What’s the call? Safe or out?

The first baseman fields it but the runner from first never leaves the bag to run to second base. The first baseman tags the runner on first while he is still on first base and then tags the base with his foot. Many said that since the runner at first never left the bag, he is not out. 🤔 While others said the runner at first is forced to run. Without looking the rule up, I would say that is a double play. This team was down by 7 runs in the last inning. They made a comeback and scored the winning run by this young man stealing home. 👏 This is why as a catcher, you never throw the ball back to the pitcher from your knees with runners on base. You always stand and take a look at the runner, ESPECIALLY with a runner on third and in this scenario, the game winning run. That’s poor coaching imho. It’s the little fundamentals that are coached in practice that add up to whether a team is prepared or not for the games. Where was the coach telling his catcher to keep an eye on the runner at third?

This play caused some scorekeeper confusion. The batter is up with two outs and two strikes. Runner on third base. The batter swings and misses, strike three but the ball gets by the catcher. Before the catcher can throw down to first base to try and get the batter out, he tags the runner out from third who is trying to steal home. Inning over. 🚨FOURTH OUT MISTAKE!!!🚨 NO WAY!!! Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays and in the 7th Boston has first and third and one out. Ceddanne Rafaela hits a fly to center and both runners forget there was one out and just ran without tagging up. After the ball was caught, the Blue Jays threw the ball in and doubled off the runner at first, for an inning ending double play. Since the runner from third scored BEFORE the third out, the run counts because this is not a force, but a timing play. What Toronto SHOULD have done is after the out at first, they legally could have thrown to third and appealed that that runner left early. This would have been the elusive FOURTH OUT and this would have replaced the third out and nullified the run. Once all the infielders crossed the foul line, the ability to appeal the play was lost, and once that happened, the run was officially counted. #DieryWater #BlueJays50

This team batting has a runner on first, less than two outs. Batter drops a beautiful bunt. The third and first base girls charge hard towards the ball. The shortstop covers second and the second base girl covered first. Textbook defense on a bunt. But the offensive team has practiced this play before. The girl at first had no intention of stopping at second base with the shortstop there and third base girl charging hard near home plate. She doesn’t break stride and heads toward third with no one there….or so she thought. 😳 The third base girl fields the ball, turns and fires to third base to get the runner. Look who is covering third base. 🙌 As well as the offensive team practiced that bunt play, the team on defense was equally as well coached. 💯 Excellent job ladies.

Some people may call me a boomer for this, but... Preventing Delayed Steals is easy. When a runner is on base STAND UP to throw the ball back to the pitcher. Throwing the ball back to the P from your knees with a runner on base is an open invitation for a Delayed Steal. If you're too tired to stand up to throw the ball back just tell the coach and I'm sure he'll find a comfortable spot for you on the bench! #EndRant

This 15U coach goes crazy over a call that ended up tying the game with 2 outs. Another day, another baseball game and another coach losing his mind. 🤦‍♂️ It’s the bottom of the last inning, there’s two outs and runners on first and second base. The pitcher throws a wild pitch. The ball skips away and bounces off a bat the umpire said. If it hit an on deck bat near the dugout, it is a dead ball and the runners advance. You can’t see the play and the coach argues that it hit the dugout pole and not a bat. (Guess he had a better angle from the third base dugout).😳 The umpires meet and at first they tell the runners to go back to where they were. But they continue talking and then say the runners advance. 🤯 The coach was ejected. 💯 The game ended in a tie when a play at the plate on another wild pitch but the runner being called out at home. This was the beginning of a tournament and you can hear one of the parents tell the coach to calm down as they have the rest of the tournament ahead. Not sure what gets into these coaches but no amount of arguing is changing a call. Let it go and just let the young men play. Do you think something needs to be done about these coaches and the way they are acting and the words spewing out of their mouths? Doesn’t it seem like it is a daily occurrence now?

When you look at it, the runner had a clear path to the bag but ran high and slid into the third base girl when if she had gone in more of a straight line would have made the tag harder. She didn’t try to slide into the base but rather the fielder imho. I say no obstruction and the right call was made. You make the call.

Replay clearly shows the runner is out. The Cubs challenge the call and are confident it is going to be overturned. After replay, the runner is called safe! 🤯 How can the replay booth who has every angle in the book at their disposal (not that you needed more than one) botch this call after the umpire just botched it? Do people lose their jobs over this? Have you seen a more terrible call ever in the replay challenge era?

The shortstop drops the ball, tags second and throws to first for the double play. The umpire called an infield fly rule, called the batter out and sent the runner back to first. He said the shortstop intentionally dropped the ball, thus he instituted the infield fly rule. I’ve never seen that before when it is not a pop up. This is a first that I’ve ever seen: challenging a call and you end up getting 3 strikes against you😅 Call on the field was out. Alabama challenged the call (obstruction on catcher) and ending up confirming the call was out, the runner at 3rd was ruled out because of the interference and then finally the runner going into home got a warning issues. You usually always see the catchers getting the short end of the stick but this time it’s the runner plus some.

If you're a baseball junkie, take the time & listen to Dino Ebel in this clip. There's a lot to unpack here, and it's all awesome stuff. First, Dino talks about time being on their side. The goal for a pitcher is to deliver the ball to home plate in 1.3 seconds. For a catcher, a 2.0 pop time is the standard, so any runner that can steal from base to base in under 3.3 seconds has time on their side. Then Dino talks about not yelling back to his runner at 2nd to make sure they're not diving back into the bag as a pitcher is delivering the ball to home plate. If that happens, a runner wouldn't be able to score from 2nd on a base hit. Finally, Dino talks about being aggressive sending runners home with 2 outs. The reason for that is that the odds are better that the defense will make a mistake somewhere along the relay chain than there is of the next hitter getting a base hit. Fans lose their minds when runners get thrown out at the plate, but, many times, don't realize, that with 2 outs it's pretty much pre-determined because it gives the offense the best odds to score a run. If the defense executes, so be it, but the next hitter has a 75% chance of getting out, and that's what makes it the correct call.
