Hubble Records Wandering Black Hole That Swallowed a Star NASA astronomers have recorded a rare event using the Hubble Space Telescope and other observatories — a tidal disruption event (TDE) involving a wandering black hole. It occurred 600 million light years from Earth and provided new insights into the behavior of black holes. The object was spotted due to gravitational lensing — the distortion of light from distant bodies under the influence of gravity. As it approached the star, the black hole tore it apart, creating a bright accretion disk that radiated in ultraviolet and visible light. Unlike typical black holes in the centers of galaxies, this one was located 2,600 light years from the core, where a supermassive black hole was already located. Despite their relative proximity, the two holes do not yet form a single system, but they may merge in the future.

What happens if you fall into a black hole? NASA's Discover supercomputer created a visualization simulating an observer's approach to the event horizon of a supermassive black hole. Astrophysicists generated approximately 10 terabytes of data over five days, which would take over ten years on a conventional computer. The model depicts a black hole with a mass equivalent to 4.3 million solar masses, comparable to the central black hole in the Milky Way. The simulated black hole has an event horizon extending 25 million kilometers. The video demonstrates the approach to the black hole from a distance of 640 million kilometers to its complete collapse. You can see how the space around the black hole appears and is distorted, as well as the accretion disk and photon ring.

NASA used a supercomputer to build a mind-bending simulation of falling into a black hole. Once you cross the point of no return, you have 12.8 seconds left to exist. To visualize these final seconds, NASA scientists ran the math of general relativity on a supercomputer, generating 10 terabytes of data in 5 days. The simulation shows a camera plunging into a supermassive black hole where light warps and space flows inward. The actual descent takes 3 hours, but to a distant observer, your image would freeze at the edge forever. A century of Einstein's equations, finally playing as video.
