This simulation shows a black hole image in total intensity (or ‘normal’ light, left) and in circular polarization (right). The blue and red colors of the circular polarization movie correspond to light rotating clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively. Credit: Angelo Ricarte

In this version, the simulation frames are blurred to represent the limited resolution of the EHT, so it cannot resolve all details in the images. The EHT's resolution is set by its observing frequency and the diameter of the Earth-sized "mirror". Credit: Angelo Ricarte

This animation shows Faraday Conversion, occurring when linearly polarized light passes through a magnetized plasma, which "converts" some of the linear to circular polarization. This effect produces nearly all of the circular polarization around M87*. Credit: Ioannis Myserlis
